AccessRomance interviews author Susanna Carr.
AR: Your newest release, PINK ICE, an anthology of four
novellas by you comes out this month. What can you tell us about this book?
Susanna: PINK ICE is about three sisters, a jewel thief, and the
incredible pair of earrings that makes their hottest fantasies come true...
The stunning pink diamond earrings were guaranteed to bring out
the bombshell in every woman. So Sabrina, Lindsay, and Nicole pooled their cash
and decided to share. Little did they guess that these perfect little baubles
were going to make their previously tranquil lives utterly X-rated...
Once Sabrina Graham puts on those stunning pink diamonds, her
inner sexpot emerges. Suddenly she's getting hot and heavy with the gorgeous bodyguard
she hired in "Pink Champagne." But how will she make the sparkle last
forever?... On vacation in Hawaii, Lindsay sheds her good-girl image and catches
the eye of a handsome venture capitalist in "Touch of Pink". But when
the diamonds wind up in his possession, she'll join whatever sensual game he's
playing to get them back. Will she ever return to her good-girl ways?... In "Pink
Positive," all Nicole wants is to spice up her life. Then in walks the irresistible
Alex Rafferty with a secret that could shatter her illusion about diamonds (and
romance) lasting forever... And in "In the Pink," the irresistible gems
become the ultimate prize for an audacious lady thief who's seduced not only by
the ice but also by the sexy PI on her trail. And he has the perfect plan for
setting her straight…
AR: This is your first release from NAL. What are the
differences and similarities between this book and the Kensington Bravas on your
back list?
Susanna: The highly sensual romances I did for Brava are very
similar to the stories I’m writing for NAL. The heroes are strong and protective,
there’s lots of sexual tension, and the heroines are ordinary women living out
their fantasies. However, I’m writing more novellas with NAL. I like the instant
gratification I get when I read novellas, and I like buying single-author anthologies
because it feels like I’m getting the trilogy or series all at once. (Once again,
the need for instant gratification!)
AR: To readers unfamiliar with your work, how would you
describe your writing? Are there any themes most of your books have in common,
subjects you find yourself drawn to?
Susanna: I do a lot of transformation stories. The transformation
isn’t always sensual, but the heroine becomes the woman of her dreams. I’m drawn
to that kind of story whether it’s in books or movies.
I write contemporary erotic romances that are lighthearted and
humorous. I try to maintain the same heat level in all my books; I don’t try to
go hotter with the next story because my readers want explicit lovemaking without
the extreme sexual situations. A lot of my readers read erotica as well, but when
they want a spicy romance that doesn’t exceed their comfort zone, they choose
one of my books.
AR: What's up next? What future releases do your readers
have to look forward to?
Susanna: In case readers missed it the first time around, VALENTINE’S
DAY IS KILLING ME will be reprinted January 2007. This is a holiday anthology
with MaryJanice Davidson and Leslie Esdaile. My contribution is the novella “Valentine
Survivor.” And in May 2007, my novella collection BAD GIRL BRIDESMAIDS will be
available. BAD GIRL BRIDESMAIDS is about three women who are heading down the
aisle and straight into trouble.
AR: Tell us a bit more about yourself. What do you like
to do in your spare time?
Susanna: If I’m not doing family stuff or walking my golden retriever
at the dog park, I’m either reading or browsing the shelves at my local libraries
and bookstores.
And now for some questions posed by our readers of the AR
All-A-Blog.
AR Reader: Do you ask for your twin sister's advice when
you write a book?
Susanna: Absolutely! I always ask Jennifer for her opinion, but
it’s different with each story. Sometimes she’s my sounding board when it comes
to titles, or when I’m stuck on a plot point. I might toss around an idea for
a story and her gut reaction tells me if it’s worth pursuing. But Jennifer has
asked me to stop emailing her at work with questions that start with, “Let’s say
you’re blindfolded and completely naked. How would you…”
AR Reader: What authors are auto buys for you?
Susanna: Lately any book I see that is from a debut author is
an auto-buy. I read a lot and am always on the lookout for fresh new voices.
AR Reader: What is something about you that your readers
would be completely surprised to find out?
Susanna: I used to write women’s erotica under a different name.
AR Reader: If your life had a theme song, what would it
be and why?
Susanna: Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar. I
like the attitude.
AR Reader: If you could switch places with one of your
heroines, who would it be and why?
Susanna: Caroline Mitchell in “Fantasies Are Forever”, the third
novella of “WICKED” WOMEN 101. She was a brainiac turned bombshell, but the hero
brought the nerd out in her. I think it would be fun to be a bombshell, at least
for a little while.
AR Reader: If one of your books could be made into a movie,
which one would you want it to be and who would play the hero and heroine?
Susanna: I would love to see LIP LOCK made into a movie. I had
pictures of Anne Hathaway and male model Eduardo Verastegui above my computer
when I wrote it, but I could also see someone with comedic timing like Kate Hudson
as the heroine. Rodrigo Santoro would also make a good hero.
AR: Thanks for chatting with us!
Susanna: Thank you! Readers can find out more about my current
and upcoming releases at www.susannacarr.com.
