How Do You Talk Books?

Hi all!

It’s been a fantastic month so far. As you know, my new book It Happened One Night just came out, and so far I’ve been thrilled by the positive responses! I’ve been meeting new online friends who like books as much as I do—connecting with them on Facebook and my blog (www.LisaDaleBlog.com). If you want to connect, look me up!

Anyway, last week I wrote a post about “booktowns”—towns that are modeled after Hay-on-Wye, a booktown Great Britain. And I was surprised by the number of readers who commented to say that they don’t have a bookstore in their town (I don’t either). Some didn’t even have a library!

They wrote that they often turned to online booksellers to make up for the lack of face-to-face book buying, and to connect with other readers, they tended to go online to sites like this one! Talking about books is often part of what’s fun about reading them. And I for one am thrilled that the Internet is such a great place for discussion and meeting new friends.

I’m always interested in learning new ways to meet readers, so I want to throw a question out to you today: How do you use the web to talk books? What book blogs do you read? What authors do you follow on Twitter? Facebook? Are you on Shelfari or Good Reads?

One commenter will win a gift from me. I’ll be happy to send you a copy of my first book, Simple Wishes.

Best and happy reading!

Lisa Dale

About IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, released on Nov. 1

Lana Biel longs to leave her family’s Vermont wildflower farm so she can travel and see the world. And her sister Karin wants nothing more than to put down roots and conceive the child she and her husband just can’t seem to have. When a lighthearted fling with a mountain biker leaves Lana expecting, she finds herself tumbling headlong into motherhood while her sister Karin can only look on.

For help, Lana turns to Eli Ward, a professional meteorite hunter and her best friend for the last ten years. But Eli’s keeping secrets that could turn their friendship on its head. As the Vermont seasons change and the flowers in the wildflower meadows begin to fade, Lana must make some meaningful decisions about her family, her friendships, her love life, and her dreams.

Romantic Times says 4.5 Stars! “Lisa Dale is adept at weaving beautiful, romantic, heart-wrenching stories. She pays attention to the finest details, and the effect knocks the wind out of you. Every single scene,… character conflict and reaction is perfect. The only downside is that the story concludes, which means our time with these wonderful characters comes to an end.”

HI, Lisa - how are you? Since I only belong to facebook, I follow Susan Mallery and YOU on there.

I follow authors also on their blog sites and various similiar sites like Accessromance.

  2. Quilt Lady Says:

Hi Lisa, I don’t do facebook or twitter but I do follow blogs. I have a lot of blogs I visit about everyday and thats how I keep up with authors. I have read your book Simple Wishes and loved it. I can’t wait to read your new one.

  3. Colleen Says:

I mostly visit blogs and author websites to learn about books… I have learned about so many names out there that I did not realize existed until blogging.

  4. RobynL Says:

    Hi Lisa and welcome.

I visit many blogs each day; I join in on chats whenever possible such as Romance Junkies, Writerspace, etc.; I peruse authors’ websites and read reviews and excerpts.
I have tried Twitter, Facebook but find it takes too much time and I’m not good on there.

  5. Linda Henderson Says:

I belong to quite a few author groups and I go to a lot of different blogs. I have become acquainted with a lot of new authors that I probably wouldn’t have known anything about except for blogs. I have Facebook & Twitter but I really don’t do much on either. We do have a nice library and a Books A Million and Hastings plus a lot of second hand book stores here where I live. I do buy books online too though. I have RA so I don’t get out much so getting books online is great for me. I’ve heard great things about It Happened One Night and I can’t wait to read it.

  7. Maureen Says:

    Hi Lisa,
Congratulations on your great reviews. I read some different blogs like this one and also some authors have blogs where they have other authors and topics about romance.

  8. QLady48 Says:

Hi, Lisa nice blog!! I only do twitter and follow blogs. I follow, bookstores, book reviewers and authors at these two places. I follow too many different people and places to list. The authors I follow are for the most part ones I read. I check reviewers to get opinions from others. I LUV the contests from all of these places!! I read approx. 4 books each week so I can use help adding to my TBR pile. You are a new writer to me but your books sound good. Thanks, Sue

  9. Diana Orgain Says:

    Great post Lisa!

  10. Jody Whitaker Says:

Good Reads Is the best way I know how. That is besides Twitter which is where you and I met. Thanks and keep up the good work you do for all of us.

    Jody

  11. Lisa Dale Says:

@PatL, Love to see familiar faces (or in this case, screen names) here and there.

@Quilt Lady, thank you soooooooooooo MUCH for your kind words about Simple Wishes. Here’s a huge *hug*!!

@Colleen, I find twitter is good for book recommendations. That, and just asking people what they’re reading now.

@RobynL, I think twitter is really best for people who want to network and really get deep into the book reading community. It takes a little practice, IMHO.

@Linda, I think word of mouth is a great way to get to know what books are really engaging people. Blogs are great for that, as you rightly point out!

@Emmanuelle, You are SO impressive. Really. I’m humbled by the list of blogs you keep up with.

@Maureen, Thanks for telling me. I’ve been kicking around the idea of inviting more writers to guest host my blog, but I wasn’t sure. I’ll have to muse a bit more on your feedback.

@QLady48, Nice to meet you! I too have a TBR pile–it’s getting to so I’m going to have to bolt it to the wall! If you do check out my books, I hope you’ll like them.

    On that note…

I’ll stop back tomorrow morning to pick a winner!

    See you then!

  12. Melanie Says:

    Hi Lisa,

I’m a huge “booknerd” but I’ve never took the time to read blogs until I discovered yours. I really enjoy reading and commenting on your blogs. You’re really kind to your fans and I’m sure everyone appreciates it like I do. It’s not all authors who take time on their busy schedules to chat with fans!
As for the authors I follow on Twitter, I follow you of course, Jodi Picoult, J.K Rowling and a few others. You’re the one and only I have on FB!
I have to say,It Happened one Night is really GOOD! I can’t wait to buy and read your first one!

  13. Eva S Says:

I read many blogs and author sites, but my book talk favorite is Goodreads. There I also find many new books for my wish list.
Congrats on the release, your book sounds great!

  14. Sara Dee Says:

Hi Lisa! I follow you, Gennita Low, Emma Holly, Katie MacAlister, Shiloh Walker and Pamela Clare on facebook. I used to visit a couple of book websites regularly but I haven’t been there in a while, mainly due to health reasons…can’t keep up with everything. I was invited by a friend to Shelfari but I haven’t checked it out yet. So much to read, so little time! :)

  15. Lisa Dale Says:

Hi all! I’m dropping in a little late this morning to choose a random winner.

Speaking of computers and books, it looks like I need a new hard drive, so I’ve got to be a bit quick this morning so I can get my poor baby into the shop!

@Melanie, Eva, Sara Dee, Diana, and Jody - thanks for your comments! Sorry I can’t reply to each one this morning! I loved reading them!

The winner, chosen totally at random, is

    QLady48!

Please email your mailing address to lisa @ lisa dalebooks.com so I can send you a copy of Simple Wishes!

    See you all soon!

  16. Colleen Says:

Congrats QLady48 on your win! Enjoy!
