Jackie Kessler’s Top Five Convention Tips

Sometimes, I think it’s cruel to ask writers–introverts by nature–to go to conferences where they’ll be among anywhere from 500 to 150,000 other people. It’s a good thing I’ve finally read Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy — I had my towel and my “don’t panic” button with me when I went to RWA National last week. I’ve learned a lot, and I thought I’d share my top ten convention tips.

1. Bring comfortable shoes. Yeah, those cute heels are adorable. They’ll also murder your feet within 30 minutes. You do a lot of standing and walking at conventions, so aim for comfort. Barring that, bring bandages for the blisters you’re bound to get.

2. Save room in your luggage for books. There are TONS of freebies at cons, especially books. Unless you want to ship all the goodies home (which you can do, right there at the hotel), make sure you save room in your luggage. And don’t go past the 50 pound maximum, or you’ll pay an extra (hefty) fee at the airport.

3. Recycle outfits. If you can help it, wear the same pants/skirt more than once. I know, it’s tough when you have cocktail parties at night and you wanna glam it up. If you can mix and match, more power to you — and less luggage to heft!

4. Bring business cards. And more than that: have them with you at ALL times.

5. Don’t overschedule. You’d be amazed how many times you’ll never even make it to events/workshops because you bump into someone you know, and two hours later you’re still schmoozing. I’m not saying you should blow off editor appointments. But do allow yourself the time to just hang out.

Conventions and conferences don’t have to be terrifying. Really. If you ever feel overwhelmed, just take a break — go to your room and veg for a bit, or have a drink (with or without alcohol). Be positive, and I bet you’ll have a terrific time.

And with that, I’m off to pack for San Diego Comic Con. Just me and 126,000 of my closest friends. Eek! Where’s that panic button…? ;)

I have not had the pleasure of going to a convention… great tips! Have a great time at the Comic con!!!  :alien: :ninja:

I thought you were an absolute pleasure to meet at the signing. It was a madhouse that I was so thrilled to be at. I could see how overwhelming it could be for most anybody and I was only there for the signing.
