A huge HUZZAH to Richelle Mead, whose third book in the Vampire Academy series, SHADOW KISS, has just hit the shelves! YA paranormal romance is hotter than ever — and if you haven’t read Richelle’s series yet, you should. Vampires, half-vampires, living vampires, undead vampires, murder, mystery, high school, cliques, teen angst, humor, fights (the verbal kind), battles (the physical kind), magic, mysticism, and, of course, romance. Good times!

A contest! I’m actually seeing Richelle on November 25 in New York, and she’s happy to sign a copy of SHADOW KISS for one lucky contest winner. To enter, comment below about the pros and/or cons of teenage romance. Winner to be picked at random on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 24.

Have at it!

    Uh… erm…

I got nothing–haven’t read much YA in… well, ever, frankly.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi.

    Hi!!!

  3. Estella Says:

    Teenage romance is pure angst!

  4. Yan Says:

I guess it all depends on your mood. Most YA book’s conflicts are straight forward and simple. If you want a much deeper meaning behind books, YA is not the way to go.

  5. Carol Says:

I think the writers of teen romance need to respect the intensity of emotion felt by teens, and not portray it either too over the top or poke fun at it. Behavior is okay to parody and make fun of sometimes, but not feelings.

I disagree with Yan — I think YA books, if well done, are just as meaningful and weighty as most adult fare.

    Carol

  6. Quilt Lady Says:

I can’t say that I have read many of the YA books but the ones I have read I have enjoyed. Teens are different today the when we were growing up. I think they mature faster the we did. guess they see more then we did at their age.

  7. catslady Says:

Hey, you have to start somewhere. I’d much prefer they start with YA and put off some of the steamier romances out there. And I have no problem reading down lol. I can read anything that’s well done no matter what the age.

  8. Brooke Says:

Ah, teenage romance. It’s light, fluffy, and fun. But damn does it hurt when it ends! Teenage hearts get broken so easily! The good thing is they can bounce back quickly and find a new and exciting love.

  9. DeeAnn S Says:

I don’t think kid’s today know or understand romance. If it isn’t hot and heavy, it’s nothing worth doing. Teens have to keep up with their “friends” or they risk being cast aside and made fun of. The world is a different place today, everything is so fast. I don’t believe teens feel they have the time to “take it slow” and therefore, do get to know what romance really is. OK, I guess that was a con!

  10. Stacie Mc Says:

I love YA! Teenage romance is intense and angst filled…just like teenagers.

  11. Pamk Says:

Since I met my hubby when I was 17 and we’ve been married 23 yrs i vote yes on teen romance lol

  12. Shari C Says:

Teenage romance is usually that first great romance that we always remember, but rarely does it last…unless one is very lucky. It seems our ‘first love’ is so passionate and intense and we plan for that ‘happy everafter’ that doesn’t always come; when that ‘first love’ ends it is quite often very emotional and we feel we will never get over it and find someone new. Ah, it was a time in my life that was full of wonderful and memorable moments, but I would not have missed it for anything.

  13. Lori T Says:

    Hi Jackie~

I love YA books…and I have read the first two in Richelle’s Vampire Academy series and they are absolutely amazing.

I think that teen romance is filled with emotional angst and the emotions are so strong and big and you just feel like nothing can ever compare to the feelings that you are having at that moment.

You should definitely try the Vampire Academy books!! I am keeping my fingers crossed.

  15. Caffey Says:

Hi Jackie! I haven’t had the joy to read these of yours yet, but so hope to change that soon. A few months ago, I was at the library visiting and it was a quiet time for me, reflecting about some difficult times, and as I walked around the children and young adult books, they had the LITTLE HOUSE book out. Gosh I so loved reading those books, over and over as a child and teen. I haven’t read them in years so when I decided to pick it up and read and it was just a wonderful feeling to go back to this book! I’ve since picked up a YA book here and there and equally and even more, enjoy those that are YA Paranormal and Fantasy books. One of the pros is that is so refreshing to read a YA againl That I am able to find myself so relaxed when I am reading them. I get emotional with reading these, which I even have a bunch of memories flow into me from my own YA years. So I think that it has alot of pros in how they pull out so much from us as an adult now.

The only con I can think of is that I didn’t discover doing this until recently. I made an assumption that I wouldn’t enjoy as much because I enjoyed those adult relationship and sensuality. But really, going back to another pro, is that the stories feel so naturally sensual between the YA characters. So I won’t go assuming no more. And these reads I’ll share too with my two children who are YA.

  16. Zara Says:

I love to read a good YA novel. With emotions at a fever pitch, the angst, the euphoria, the awakening of feelings that are a teen rite of passage, what better material could there be? Being the Twilight addict that I am, I need a new-to-me YA series to get into. Thanks for the recommendation and chance to win.

  17. limecello Says:

I haven’t read YA books in a while… but pros - very sweet, can be cute, fun, and quirky. Cons? Angst. Lots of angst. *prom* angst. *shudders*

  18. Tammy G. Says:

I see nothing wrong with teenage romance.

  19. RachaelfromNJ Says:

One pro of teenage romance is that you never forget the first boy you loved. He will always hold a special place in your heart. The cons are obviously heartbreak and moving too fast in a relationship at such a young age. When we’re older we are better judges of what men are bad for us and who is worth our time. But when we’re teenagers we don’t have many preferences besides a cute face and nice hair.

I would LOVE to win Richelle Mead’s book!!! AWESOME contest Jackie!!

  20. Colleen Says:

It has been some time since I last read a YA… Thanks for the intro to this author and her novels… Sounds like a great series! I am a sucker for romance!

  21. Patty L. Says:

My twelve year old daughter loves YA vampire stories. She loved Erin Lynn’s Demon Envy that came out last year and is anxiously awaiting the new book in that series that she will be getting for Christmas.

Please put my name in the drawing for this book, Emily would love it.

  22. Lauren Says:

Though I’m in my late 20s, I still like to read alot more YA than I care to admit. I’m pro YA whether there is romance or not, though most YA tends to contain at least some aspect of romance. I love how much YA has expanded in the past 10 years or so and it is great to see so much more reading material aimed at teens. I think anyone of any age can enjoy a well written novel regardless of the target audience or the age of the protagonist.

  23. Cherie J Says:

Teenage romance is like a flame that burns fiercely. The con of that is if they are not careful the flame can burn out. I enjoy reading YA romance very much. There are some really great ones out that I have read.

  24. Melis L. Says:

I am in my 40’s and still read YA books from time to time. They are really good books that contain great stories!

I remember when I had crushes on boys in my teens. I have to agree with some of the others that when you are that young romance is a foreign field to most girls. It is better to wait until you are in your twenties before getting serious with a guy. I didn’t get married until I was 25 and thanked my parents for being so responsibile and caring about me.

  25. Cara Says:

:dizzy: Young love is the most roller coster time in life. Everything is brighter and livelier than ever. The ups and downs are so dramatic….

  26. Deidre Says:

I kind of hated it. It was just all consuming and that starts to really interfere with other aspects of life.

    Deidre

  27. catslady Says:
