A recent article in the New Zealand Herald drew my attention with the title “The Rise and Rise of Killer Heels”. It seems models are toppling left, right and center, falling off their high heels at fashion shows this year.
Italian born Catherine de Medici brought high heels into vogue for women in 1533 when she insisted on having heels made for her in Florence prior to her wedding. The 14 year old vertically challenged bride set the rage in Paris for the new “It” shoe. We’ve been wearing high heels ever since.
I’ll admit I have a love/hate affair with shoes. They look stunning when I’m peering through shop windows with lots of lovely colors and designs. The hate part comes when I try to find a pair to fit. When I was about ten I distinctly remember sitting in a shoe shop with dozens of discarded pairs sitting on the floor beside me. My mother was on a mission to find me a pair of shoes for school. The shop assistant was starting to get grumpy. She went out the back and after a long absence came back with another box. “If this pair of shoes doesn’t fit,”she said, “You’ll have to wear the box.”
My mother thought it was funny. I didn’t. The woman hurt my feelings and I haven’t enjoyed shopping for shoes since.
Anyway, back to the article. Zoe Walker, the fashion columnist gave a few hints about high heels.
1. Wear shoes that fit. Shoes that are too big will make you stretch your foot out and may lead to an unladylike trip. Small shoes plain hurt.
2. Don’t wear heels all day and night. Give your feet a break.
3. Scholl Party Feet – or similar products are a high heel wearer’s friend.
4. There’s nothing worse than a woman who can’t walk in heels. Practice. Camilla Morton, the author of How to Walk in High Heels suggests the supermarket as the ideal place to practice your high heel glide. Use the trolley as a balancing tool. Evidently this hint really works.
5. Don’t drink and heel. It’s a fact – high heel face-plants are more prevalent after a few drinks. It’s suggested that a woman wear shoes that need less concentration if she intends to have a few drinks.
CONTEST: Tell me your high heel stories. Are there particular shoes you covet? Do you like heels? Wear them? Have high heel dramas or experiences you’d like to share?

I don’t like heels. The highest ones I think I own is maybe 1 inch if that.

When I was younger, I loved high sexy heels. They made me taller, so I felt more confident and maybe a bit more powerful. Men loved the way they made my ass and legs look. All around hotness! As I’ve aged and sprained both ankles innumerable times, I’ve decided that comfortable, supportive shoes are the thing, though I try to keep them stylish.
My most dramatic experience in heels (if your aren’t counting the “bend over, baby” experiences) was also a humility lesson. I was so young, maybe 15 or 16, in the 70’s when the big cork platform sandals were hot (the first time around). I was wearing hot pants (yes, but I had the body), and was strutting like I owned the world. I just knew all eyes were on me (okay, so many of them were rolling), and I breezed through a door…and fell flat on my face.
Ah, youth.

Hi Shelley, congrats on your release! Of course, on one of the most important days of my life, with more than 300 people watching only me — my wedding — I tripped in my heels walking down the aisle. So embarrassing. It wasn’t until the reception that I was able to put on the cute platform white running shoes that I’d bought and were way more comfortable.

I don’t like heels, either.

My sister who is 6′2″ loves heels…me, I only wear them on special occasions. I have this beautiful navy blue pair that wrap up and around the ankle with a 2 inch wide heel. Love them and I keep them lookin nice! My sister will wear heels all the time, she enjoys the variety… me, I am very picky!

I love the way heels look but I’ve got terrible taste, so I mainly wait for my sister to buy lovely shoes and then borrow them (sometimes permanently ;)) I desperately wanted a particular Kenneth Cole pair for my wedding, but couldn’t for the life of me track them down so I ended up going with my back ups. Which in retrospect was probably a smart thing (the coveted shoes were definitely higher and I can imagine the kind of klutzy fiascos I could have fallen into with those on)!

Tammy – come to think of it, most of my heels are on the conservative side as well!
Ms. Valerie – LOL I remember those cork platforms. Ouch. That must have hurt both the ankles and your pride.
JK – OMG, I guess you won’t forget that in a hurry.
Minna – there’s something to be said for having a good grip on the ground!
Colleen – Most women that tall wouldn’t wear heels. I bet she attracts attention in her heels.
Fedora – what a great sister you have. My sister has normal sized feet, so did my mother. I ended up with the ugly duckling feet.

I don’t like high heels! All of my shoes are flat.

Just wanted to drop in and say hi. I trip over air walking barefoot, there is no telling what I would do in a pair of really high heals. The highest my shoes get are about an inch to inch & a half.

I did not wear heels until the last year when I found thick 2 inch heels that were more comfortable than flats. Love the look of heels. Has anyone seen the calender with heels created from vines/flowers/leaves. Some seem more dainty but others look as if they should be on the runway.

I rock heels.Only with open toe and open heel. This way when I sit or stand someplace I can kick one or both off.The more barefoot time you get from wearing heels the better you’ll be feeling!

OHHHH you are too funny, me and high heels are you kidding me?? I can barely walk as it is forget putting me in high heels I would die trying to walk or kill someone else while in the process.

Hi Shelley!! With being unable to hear, I have a bad balance and have no way to be able to walk in heels! So I’ve never been able to wear high heels. I did try but I had always walked off the sidewalk wearing sneakers so I didn’t take chances with them there for sure but did for my wedding. I had my dad to hold on to! LOL.
Your books look great!!

I only wore heels when I worked, but not too high since I was on my feet the majority of the day. Once I retired, I threw them all out. Now I mostly go barefoot around the house, and wear Birkenstock sandals and clogs the rest of the time. Definitely happy feet these days!

Estella – it seems quite a few of us don’t wear heels.
Greta – LOL – we must be sisters. I have my clumsy moments, that’s for sure!
Lindsey – no, I haven’t seen the calendar. It sounds interesting. Is there an online link?
Amanda – heels always look so sexy. I do get shoe envy sometimes.
Tami – another sister for me.
Caffey – hi! I can imagine heels would be tricky for you. Did you need to practice wearing the heels for your wedding? I wore some pretty flats at my wedding. I’m tall and didn’t want to tower over hubby in the photos.
Cathy – now that I work at home I’m barefoot most of the time. Either that or Tevas.

I can’t do high heels anymore but I can’t seem to part with them, either. About a year ago my feet started to ache and so my podiatrist nixed heels. If it was up to him, I’d wear New Balance gym shoes all day, even to the day job. I wore them for about a month until the worst of my feet trouble was past and then I found a pair of fairly decorative flat shoes I don’t mind wearing to work with dressier clothes.
As per a heel story, one week at work, I fell twice when wearing new not very high heels. I think there was too much wax on the floor. Anyway, our HR director asked me if I was on drugs. Maybe I should’ve stopped wearing heels then.
November 16th, 2008 at 12:18 am
Oh,no! Ashley, the HR director actually said that???

I don’t wear heels often, but I have to wear my high-heeled boots on Halloween, no matter what.
