Rumors that erotica is dead have been floating around for a while now. And they’re even stronger now that the RWA National Conference has ended. Urban Fantasy is in, Erotica is out. To mangle what Greenday once said “Erotica is only dead to those who never got it in the first place.”

Erotica has been around for decades, and it will remain. The last few years there has been a flood of erotic fiction into bookstores, and yes, that flood is sure to turn into a river, and maybe even a stream. But it will be a steady stream of quality erotic fiction. Because no matter what anyone says, publishers don’t determine the market, READERS DO. And it’s been proven that there are plenty of readers who like it hot.

As an author who loves to write erotic fiction, I’m going to do my best to stick around. I’ll be pimping and promoting my books, and trying to make you all so hot and bothered and intrigued that you’ll rush out to a store and pick up every one of my books. (Including MY PREROGATIVE, which release on Sept 2 nd *grin* )

Your job as a reader who likes reading erotic fiction, is simple. Keep reading, keep buying, and keep talking. Talk to each other, because word of mouth can keep an authors career alive. Talk to us, because fan-mail can keep an author sane and inspired. And in an effort to encourage you to keep reading… I’ve got a copy of TROUBLE to give away!
Tell me in the comments what YOU think about the rumor that erotic fiction is dieing in the comments to be entered to win. I’ll draw the winners name on Friday and announce here on Sat.

WINNER: FEDORA, your name was picked to win a copy of TROUBLE. PLease email me (sasha @ sashawhite.net) by Wednesday August 3rd to collect your prize.

First things first, love your books Sasha. Now down to the good stuff, I love a good erotic romance, but it’s not something I can read book after book of. I usually throw one to every 4-5 books I read and since I read 4-5 books a week, I will definetly keep the erotic line in business. LOL

  2. Stacie Mc Says:

Every genre has sales peaks and nadirs. They tend to be sorta cyclic. Just because sales are down doesn’t mean erotica is out. Hot will be hot again.

  3. Rebekah E. Says:

I think things go in a cycle just like the weather. What goes down must come up. There is alway a new generation of kids out there there that are going to grow up and pick up erotic fiction and love it. Sales might be down but I think they will go back up, you just can never say when.

I’m convinced of this, and that’s why I post reviews all over the place.

    Keep writing!

  5. Colleen Says:

I also enjoy reading erotic romances every so often… as was said above, things yo-yo a bit, but I do not believe it is a dying genre! Keep on writing!!!

  6. Fedora Says:

I’d be very surprised if erotic romance were on its way out–even through peaks and valleys of cycles, hot is still hot :) And yes, I do enjoy reading it myself!

  7. Estella Says:

I enjoy reading erotic romances. I do not read a lot of them–about one a week. As long as readers buy them the genre will not go out of style.

  8. Sara Says:

I love your books… I’ve actually already pre-ordered the ebooks version from BooksOnBoard (where they’re actually running a special, so it seems like some people at least are buying it!). As someone who buys less by genre and more by what appeals to me, I think good writing will always win, regardless of how popular the genre is.

  9. Jennifer K. Says:

I enjoy reading erotica, as well as non-erotica. Everything goes in cycles, I know my reading does. So, if it does go out of style, take heart that it will be back at some point in the future. But my reading tastes don’t generally follow what the publisher say are in, so I don’t worry so much.

I think predicting book trends or saying things is always going to be wrong. Readers like a genre, and they’re going to find it -even if they go with a niche author. Certain types of subgenres might flood the market for a while, but I think it’s constantly shifting.
I’m super excited about your new book, Sasha. I like books with a lot of heat. (I also like my stories with a plot and romance as well.) I hadn’t heard that erotica is on it’s way out, but I have heard some complaints of shock value/purposeless actions in writing.
Interesting. I always wonder who is saying “X” genre is over.

  11. DeeAnn S Says:

Erotic fiction will never die! After all, hot is hot and everyone needs a little heat. I’ve been reading erotica for over 40 years and have no intention of stopping now. Besides, it spices things up and gives ya ideas!

  12. Dina Says:

As long as we want to read these books, someone will write them for us. ;)

  13. Greta Says:

I enjoy erotic & non-erotic fiction. And I just don’t see erotic fiction dying anytime soon. In my opinion I believe with e-book publishers it’s a growing market.

  14. Sasha White Says:

Sorry it took so long to reply, I was at work today. So here’s a long a$$ blended reply to the comments. :)

When New York houses started a big erotic push in 2005, I remember writers saying, OMG, Erotic is a new genre, and that sort of thing. I also remember thinking…Where have you been? Erotica has been around fro ever. The Story Of O anyone?

I think that’s why it bothers me when industry gossips starts to say this is in, or out… I fully agree that every genre has it’s ebb and flow. So does the ocean, and its not going anywhere.

And Thank You everyone for the kind words about my stories and writing. I started writing erotic fiction before NY made it popular, and I know many reviewers have commented that what I write isn’t romance…well…. I believe it’s romance, just not traditional romance. BUt I also think it takes all sorts of people to make the world go ’round…and all sorts or characters need to be explored in fiction.

I love to rite edgy stories, edgy characters, and even edgy sex… but I’m not a fan of thinking of ways to push the envelope just for pushing it..and I agree that there are many authors out there that thinking order make a story hot, or hotter, that they have to get wilder or kinkier… that shock value thing. I think those stories may see a decline, simply because they won;t keep readers satisfied for long. But I love that there are so many of you who will always find enjoyment in erotic fiction. I know I will.

  15. Little Lamb Lost Says:

It is interesting to see people predicting the death of genres and sun-genres. I agree with your view of erotic romance and erotica, there will be continued interest.

Oh and no need to put me in the draw, I am the happy owner of a copy of Trouble and thoroughly love the story. Congratulations on your latest release. Happy writing and many sales to you.

  17. Sue A. Says:

I don’t agree with those predictions. There’s a demand for erotic romance and erotica and there are readers out there who have yet to discover them. I waited a long time before these genres to become mainstream and I’m not going to let this happen.

  18. Laurie G Says:

I’m really not experienced with the erotica gendre but think that it definitely has it’s place in the romance sector! I’d love to try “Trouble” and “experience” your perspective.
I like the voyeuristic aspect of My Perogative.

  19. kh Says:

id ont agree with it, I have trouble. very good thanks
