All night long

Dara Girard

Question: If someone ends up with four deadlines in one week is that bad timing or bad luck?

Answer: It’s insanity.

Yes, I have four deadlines this week, including posting for this blog. But I won’t complain about it because deadlines mean I’m working and working is good.

However, this also means I’m guranteed at least two sleepless nights. Fortunately, I’m really good at pulling all-nighters (high school and college were great training grounds. Who knew this would be helpful in my career?)

So here are my top six ways to pull an all-nighter (for writing, if you have to pull an all-nighter for something else you’re on your own.)

1. Comfortable clothing.

2. Chewing gum–especially peppermint.

3. Bright lights (it tricks the mind to think it’s earlier than it really is, that’s a good thing).

4. Snacks (preferably crunchy)

5. Stretching. Tight shoulders and cramping hands really slow your rhythm.

6. Reminding myself how happy and proud I’ll be when it’s all done (after promising myself I’lll never do it again).

I could come up with more, but it’s already past 11 PM and I know it’s going to be a long night.

  1. Good luck on your deadlines and I’m sending your sympathy for your all-nighter. I hope writing is your day job, if not your screwed. LOL

  2. I remember those all-nighters from school…lots of luck to you. I know you can do it!
I used to come up with a nice reward for myself after I accomplished whatever my all- nighter was about…always helped me keep going…that and a lot of coffee and snacks.

  3. Ouch, Dara! Hope it’s all done and you can take a nap soon! Hang in there! (How terrific that you’ve got four deadlines! They all want your work! ;)) Take care!

  4. Good lucky, Dara. In college, I always had snacks and music on when I stayed up writing a paper.

  5. Haha oh no, this reminds me of college! May I recommend these study ebooks to you? They have a lot of tips that certainly helped me in college!
