Next week I’ll be taking part in a romance reader’s dream experience — signing at the RWA (Romance Writers of America) Literacy Signing in San Francisco. Why is it a romance reader’s dream? Because I am signing along with more than 450 romance authors. Yeppers — more than 450 romance authors all in one place that’s open to the public and no admission costs!
On a personal level, for a brief time, I will be a fangirl — gushing to all my favorite authors, buying their latest releases, chatting with other readers and, did I mention, buying romance novels. Even though I’ll be signing my own book, I always try to make a quick run around the floor, searching out authors I’ve read but not yet met. A couple of recent favorites I’ll be looking for are Anna Campbell and Deb Marlowe — writers of wonderful historical romances. And I’ll be looking for a few new authors to try…
But the part I like the best about going to the conference and the signing is talking to so many people. I love meeting new people, seeing old friends and acquaintances, matching names and faces and talking about writing and books. Unlike the introverts who Mary Jo Putney referred to in her keynote speech a couple of years ago, introverts who find it difficult to function around so many people for a whole week, I am a social person who both loves and thrives in crowds. I get to talk with lots and lots of other writers and readers, others who like myself hear voices or see visions and are actually accepted in polite society.
So, this extrovert will be having the time of her life running around like a madwoman, meeting her favorite authors, talking writing and books and signing books. If you’d like to watch the show, just stop in at the RWA Literacy Signing on 7/30 at the San Francisco Marriott from 5:30 - 7:30pm. I’m in the BR section….and loving it!

Congrats Terri, on being part of the literacy signing. I’ll be there next week (as a reader) in all my introverted glory. It’s fun, and I can’t wait to meet several of my online friends in person, but I know it will also be exhausting, since crowds tend to drain me. But then I tend to do a little sightseeing, so it’s all good :)

Congrats on the signing and I hope you get to meet and get an autographed book from all of your favorite authors. I won’t be attending this year, but will be there in spirit. As a fellow extrovert I love signings and hope to one day attend the RWA signing, if not as a writer at least as a fan.
HAVE FUN!!!!!

Stacy —
I understand from my introvert friends that the conference is exhausting to them and they usually seek out some quiet time in their rooms or out of the hotel. Not me, I’m usually sitting in the lobby/bar talking to anyone who will talk to me!

Patti –
Oh, try to get to an RWA conference at some time if you’re a romance writer. It’s very different than the reader-based RT convention and you get to meet not only writers but industry professionals, too.
I do have to be careful when acting as fangirl. When I finally met the first romance author I’d ever read — Julie Garwood — I think I came across as a bit too enthusiastic, if you know what I mean? Her people moved in closer as I talked more and more.. When I realized it, I did take a deep breath and a step back and everyone relaxed!! And I was even allowed to moderate her ‘chat with’ session at the next conference so all ended well.

I hope you have a great time at the conference, Terri. It sounds like it will be a lot of fun, but I’d be one of those introverts looking for a quiet place to hide. It drives my very extroverted brother crazy sometimes when we go over to our friends’ houses for parties.

Terri, ‘BR’ is very close to ‘CA’ - you’d better come and say hello, my friend! And thanks for the plug
I’m flying out to San Francisco this morning - I can hardly wait to see everyone! Whoo-hoo!

Go be a Fangirl even if only for a little while. And have a blast at the confrence.

I’ll be signing this year, too. I’m an introvert and find the conference fun, but exhausting. I freeze up in crowds, so if anyone sees me, please have pity on me and say HI! (I’m easy to spot — a tall, gawky writer with nothing to say). Seriously, it is a great event, but it’s all mingle-mingle-mingle, very tough for someone like me. And Karin, I’m with you. My favorite part of the conference is hiding out in my room at night!!!
