Blogging About Bloggin’

Denise A Agnew

I’ll admit it. This week I had an A-number one case of blogging block. That insane illness that attacks an author when they realize that they don’t have an idea for their blog due this week. Then I thought…why not blog about blogging? Heck, that can’t be a novel idea, right?

How many blogs to you actually look at in one day? What draws you to them? I visit one blog a day on average. Sometimes two, and if I visit three, I must be on some kind of drugs. ☺ No, honestly I visit Access Romance and The Bradford Bunch www.thebradfordbunch.com often, if not every day. I also drop by Tess Gerritsen’s blog, which I love. Soon I’m blogging at Danger Zone Authors www.dangerzoneauthors.com (under construction). Danger Zone Authors debuts on May 11, so I hope you stop by and visit us.

I fear that blogs will be featured in dire news reports one day that sound like this, “Scientists say that blogging causes cancer.” After all, doesn’t everything cause some form of cancer? I say this only half tongue in cheek. One day red wine was good for your heart. The next day if you are a postmenopausal woman it’ll give you an increased risk for cancer. So why not blogging? Scientists could tell you today that bloggin’, like any form of writing, is good for your brain cells and keeps them functioning…like a game of Sudoku (did I spell that right?) The next…blogging hits the dirt because all those brain cells are now dying from blog overload.

What motivates me to blog, you might ask? It’s a marketing tool for me, yes. Readers might like what they read and decided they’ll give this ole author a try if they haven’t already. In fact, I will do a shameless plug right now! Keep your eyes peeled for the next story in my HOT ZONE series, CLOSE QUARTERS. It is out May 20 at Samhain Publishing www.samhainpublishing.com Plus, I just learned the first story in the series, MALE CALL, is a finalist in the novella category of the PASSIONATE PLUME contest! How great is that? Okay, shameless marketing moment over.

I know my favorite blogs connect with me on a deeper level, though, than just marketing. Blogs can be a wonderful way to communicate with others no matter what your reasons are for doing it. When you read a blog, what is most likely to draw you into wanting to come back and read more?

That’s all for today, except for revealing one truly twisted author daydream that flashed into my head as I was writing this on Tuesday. It wouldn’t surprise me one day if reporters came on the news looking glammed up, serious expressions pinned on the camera and said, “Scientists today tell us there is a good chance that watching television news causes cancer.”

Denise A. Agnew, walking away with a serious case of smarty pants.

  1. As a reader obviously I love to visit the blogs of favorite authors, and keep updated on what’s going on. Obviously common interests, not just books, but favorite books, favorite authors, favorite music, movies, hobbies all keep me going back to the same places. I love it when authors share those things. They don’t have to reveal personal secrets, just things they enjoy. It makes for a greater connection and I find myself frequenting those blogs more often than others that are more business-oriented.

I’ve also met several wonderful online friends. In fact next month I’ll be traveling to meet a few who’ve become really good friends over the last 2 years. It’s amazing how the internet and blogging brings people together and creates lasting relationships.

  2. Hi Denise!

There are a handful of blogs that I visit every single day, first thing after logging on to the computer. Others I might click on later in the day or maybe every few days. While blogging is informative and fun, it’s also a huge time-sucker! I like to know what is going on with authors, what they’re working on and when their new releases will be available. Don’t worry, your shameless plus is excused - mainly because I can’t wait for CLOSE QUARTERS to be in my grubby little paws! I also enjoy reader blogs that share reviews, jokes and information. I avoid those blogs that incorporate “snark” about books, authors, readers or reviewers - that’s just not my style. While I may not be a ray of sunshine, I try to have a positive outlook and don’t like the negativity of these sites.

I too have met some of my dearest friends online - including Stacy~!! - if you had told me ten years ago that I would have bunches of new friends that I had met on the internet and that my life would be significantly changed without them in it, I would have scoffed.

Great topic! Have a wonderful day!

  3. Hi there Stacy!

Thanks so much for giving me a comprehensive note on what you like to read about on blogs. This is so helpful!!! I wondered if maybe what a lot of readers like is to see the human side of the author and not just what they’re writing and why. :) This is good info. t know. That’s neat that you’ve made onllne friends that last. There area some friends that I met way back in the eons of time through Prodigy and I’m still friends!!! Remember Prodigy? Some of these friends remain just on line friends because we haven’t had the opportunity to meet in person. It’s been since about ‘94 that I met these people on line. With some of them I have gotten the opportunity to meet them in person and that’s been awesome!

  4. Hi Laurie,

Good to see you here again. You’re right…blogging can suck time away. And I’m excited that you’re excited about CLOSE QUARTERS. This is good news to an author’s ears! I’ll have to admit that snark isn’t my style for the most part either. I figure positive usually draws positive into my life, and I’d like to keep it that way. And you and Stacy are friends, too, eh??? Cool!!!

  7. I visit several blogs a day and have found out it takes a lot of time. Right now I should be out taking a walk it would be better for me. I think I am an addict. Is there any support groups out there for blog addition?

  8. Congrats on being a finalist!

Well you did what I like best about blogs - responding back. I don’t expect a response at every blog every time but I do expect it sometimes.

I enjoy hearing about books and what the author is doing but also personal facts or ideas. I have found two really special sites but go to at least a dozen every day. Then I come and go at others. It’s kind of a quandry, when the blog gets more popular and more people join it gets to where there are too many posts to read and then you don’t get much of a response. It becomes too impersonal and too time consuming.

  12. Hi Catslady! Good to see you here again. I really do try to reply to everyone. Not being on a blog that gets a gazillion replies a day, though, that probably helps. Thanks for the kudos on the final, by the way. I appreciate it.

  13. Hi Denise, I have about 4 blogs for favorite authors that I try to peek at every day. And I am really looking forward to your new release and your new blog.

by Cathy M on April 17th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

  14. I visit 8-10 blogs a day, including this one and The bradford Bunch.
These blogs are my way of keeping up with all the new books these authors are writing.
I realize this takes a lot time. I am retired and reading and gardening are my favorite things to do, so I visit blogs to find new books.

  15. Cathy, sorry I didn’t answer yesterday. Ooops! Glad you’re looking forward to the new release. That’s always music to an author’s ears. :)
