Bookstore Envy

Elizabeth Hoyt

So recently my critique partner, Jade Lee, and I decided to sign stock at twenty-five bookstores on the way to a conference we were attending. Now, aside from the sheer foolishness of thinking we could breeze in and out of twenty-five bookstores and merely add an hour or two to our driving time (insert hysterical laughter here) it soon became apparent that visiting so many bookstores was something of an occupational hazard.

Believe it or not, writers also like to read books and when I’m in a bookstore–even if it’s the fifteenth of the day–it’s hard not to do a little browsing. Actually, it’s darn near impossible, for me at least, not to browse in a bookstore, which may explain why I came back from the conference with more books than I’d taken.

But I digress. What I’d wanted to post about was the Coolest Bookstore in the World, which we visited in Lexington, KY and which I’d never even heard of before. It’s the Joseph-Beth Booksellers and it had everything. Chocolates! Nifty bath products! Cute kid toys! A really good restaurant! Luggage I couldn’t afford! Oh, and books! Lots and lots and lots of books, scattered here and there throughout the big, airy, inviting store. In fact I’d probably still be in the Joseph-Beth store if Jade hadn’t dragged me out kicking and screaming.

So, what’s your favorite bookstore like?

Cheers!
Elizabeth

  1. Hi my name is Patty and I am a bookaholic. I have never met a bookstore I didn’t like. I always spend more money than I have and love every second of it. I have to admit to being a big Borders fan. I love to grab a cup of chai tea and sit in a big chair while my kids browse their departments. Our local bookstore doesn’t have a huge romance section, and is very small. I normally have to order all my books from them.

  2. LOL, Patty. I’m a bookaholic, too. I would rather buy books than anything else, and my wardrobe is lacking in a major way! My fav is a huge Barnes & Noble in a nearby town. They have rows and rows of romance.

Elizabeth, I have a special memory of buying THE RAVEN PRINCE there. I loved the cover and after I read the blurb, I was hooked. It’s one of the best historicals I’ve ever read. I have it listed as a favorite on my web site, and posted a review. I also enjoyed THE LEOPARD PRINCE and THE SERPENT PRINCE. Good to see you here!

  3. Ellizabeth, I have read The Leopard Prince and will have to say it was the best book that I read in 2007, loved it. Now I want to get The Raven Prince and The Serpent Prince, but I am going to have to order it form Amazon unless I make it to Lexington, KY. I live about 40 miles from there, but have never been it the book store you mentioned. I will have to look it up some day when we are in Lexington. We just don’t go there very often, to much traffic. I hate fighting traffic, its bad enough in my small town that I live in.

  4. I’m easy… I’d be happy if my local bookstores just catered better to my romance reading habit. Luckily, we have online stores.

Although chocolate and books in the same store sounds so good it has to be illegal somewhere.

  5. The most interesting bookstore I’ve ever visited is Jekyll Books on Jekyll Island here in Georgia. They too sell everything from candles, music, unique toys, fruit preserves, etc. The store is arranged by theme with a different theme for each room. Wonderful! Here’s a blurb from their web site: http://www.jekyllbooks.com/

Jekyll Books at The Old Infirmary is located in the Old Goodyear Infirmary in the Historic District of Jekyll Island. The beautiful Victorian was originally built as Furness Cottage and was later owned by publising tycoon, Jospeh Pulitizer. The Goodyear family purchased the cottage and later donated it for use as the Jekyll Island Club Infirmary.
