Britney Spears

Charlotte Hughes

Would somebody puh-lease tell me why you can’t turn on the TV without hearing about Britney Spears?  Before she hit the limelight it was Paris Hilton.  I’ve never heard Britney sing so I don’t know how talented she is, but I’m tired of hearing about her nervous breakdown.  Nobody gave a damn when I had mine!  I guess I should feel sorry for her that her breakdown is taking place in front of God and everybody, but it’s her own fault.  Why doesn’t she just lock herself inside her palace, pull the drapes, and have her breakdown in privacy?  That way she won’t have to deal with Dr. Phil and the media.  Britney’s publicist needs to tell her to disappear for a while like Paris Hilton.

I wonder if these spoiled little rich girls know we’re at war.  I wonder if they know or even care about what’s going on in Sudan and Darfur.  People in Haiti are eating dirt cookies.  Some people in third world countries are so poor they’re selling their organs in order to feed their family.  When you feel like crap, and believe-you-me, I’ve been there, the best thing you can do is reach out and help somebody.  When you help somebody else you have less time to feel sorry for yourself.

I blame the media as well for chasing Britney all over the place.  Why don’t the media spend more time talking about our troops?  I would love to hear about what kind of person our latest casualty was like.  What were his or her dreams?  What were they like in high school?  Who were their friends?  Did they have hobbies?  How are their families finding strength to get through it?

That’s what I really care about.

  1. Hi Charlotte, Your not the only one sick of hearing about Brittney. You weren’t missing anything with her singing either, how she sold so many albums is a mystery to me. I feel the same about the media. She obviously craves it and wants it on her 24/7. There a lot of celebrities that are not in the spotlight because they don’t want to be. They don’t go to the places that are targets for the papparatzi(sp?) and smart ones live in other cities and states to raise their kids. It’s pretty sad when you hear more about Brittney than what’s going on in the world. I’ve watched the BBC news sometimes and it has a lot of stories that are about real news events and happenings. It would be nice if our media would give more important stories the attention we deserve to hear.

  2. The answer to most of your questions boil down to one answer: Money! Her and her antics sell newspapers and bring in TV ratings. It’s all pretty sad. Personally, I don’t give a crap about her, it’s her children who are really suffering. I think why we care is that here is a woman who supposedly had it all and just can’t handle it. I think she decided she wanted to “play house” and when things got too tough and reality hit, she lost it. When you always have “yes men” around you, you lose touch with reality.

Oh, and for me, my father has always told me that no matter how bad you think you have it, there is ALWAYS someone in the world who is worse off than you so just count your blessings.

  3. I can’t say it any better that Brownone. Brittany is money and she sells papers, it’s simple as that. Ironically, my daughter used to idolize her and now she feels sorry for her. She has dropped so low on should I care list, that I actually don’t know what’s going on anymore. LOL

  5. Amen, everyone. I don’t want to hear any more about her or her unfortunate children, or Paris and her shenanigans or any of these other misguided people in hot pursuit of fleeting media coverage. :( Maybe that’s why I tend to avoid most of those stories and TV coverage… too much to read to waste time on these!

  6. I agree. I am so disgusted by television “news.” We have far more important things to worry about in this world than the antics of a rich celebrity. Before Paris Hilton it was the Rosie O’Donnel/Donald Trump flap. It got so that I wanted to SCREAM when newscasters talked about it — and I flipped the television off. Instead of news, we get 30 seconds of current events and then 15 minutes of celebrity fluff. It is totally inexcusable. Americans can’t afford to be so ignorant about what is going on in the world.

  8. I am tired of hearing about her too. But I feel sorry for her. I wonder if her biggest problem is not having someone in her life who cares more about her well being than her ability to make money. She needs someone to tell her to snap out of it and then help her clean up her life. And the media needs to leave her alone so she can.

  9. Not to side with the Britney camp because I’m not - I’m just as sick of it as the rest of you - but I do feel compassion for anyone with bipolar disorder. I’ve known 2 people who have it and the moodswings and emotions can be extreme. True, my friends did not go and do crazy things like Britney, so that’s why I feel more sorry for her children and the kind of mom they have, at least the way she is now.

As for the media, part of the problem is the public. A lot of people eat this stuff up - it’s what they want and they buy the tabloids by the dozens, watch all the entertainment shows and websites. It’s popular, and that’s why this crap makes headline news. Crazy I know, because I believe we should be focusing on people in need, and the troops who protect us everyday, instead of worrying about who Paris is dating this week or what catastrophe Brit has been involved in.

  10. I’m sick to death of ALL celebrities and their problems, but have to admit that my heart aches a bit for Britney. I wish everyone would leave her alone. This is none of our business.

Sad thing is that so many people can tell you in distinct detail every juicy tidbit about all of the celebrities, but they’re clueless about matters of significant importance - unemployment, the looming recession, political candidates, the war in Iraq, the homeless, how many children right here in our country are going to bed hungry. Sorry, but this just hits a nerve with me.

  11. MANY THANKS to all of you who responded to my blog on Britney Spears. I, too, feel bad for her if she’s having some sort of breakdown, but enough already! I am thrilled that your responses boil down to the same thing — our country is in turmoil and that’s what we should be paying attention to. Unfortunately, a photo of a returning troop from Iraq does not bring in the $ that a photo of Britney in an ambulance does.

I have to get this off my chest or I’ll explode. Did anyone hear the speech made by comedian Kathy Griffin when she rec’d an award — I think in October or November of last year??? I can’t remember the details or what she was awarded for. (Somebody help me out on that, please.) Nevertheless, I found her remarks so offensive. I don’t think she’s a great comedian, but that’s just me. Her comedy is often at the (hurtful/spiteful) expense of others. Sure, comedians poke fun at others all the time, but I think Griffin has crossed the line too many times.

I have only the deepest respect for those like George Cloony, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pit, and many others who have used their stardom to make a difference in the world. I’d like to see the Paris Hiltons of the world do the same.

Okay, I’ll get off my soapbox now. Again, thanks for responding! You guys rock!
