Actually they’re called book trailers and they’re all over the web. With the advent of MySpace pages and Youtube, you’ve got a ready made way to showcase your book. A new way to promote. It’s easy and simple to make one on your own or, if you have the available cash, you can hire Circle of Seven or another company that specializes in book trailers. Some of them are done with cool graphics. Author Susan Kearney used actual models and a film-like short video to promote her book
From an article in Romantic Times by Liz French, who says “Sheila Clover English, whose book video company Circle of Seven Productions patented the name “book trailers,” says there are two main groups of people that the trailers are targeting – devoted readers who look to the book video as an announcement of what one of the their favorite authors has out, and the occasional reader who is tech savvy but not necessarily browsing the bookstore. ‘As an industry, we must reach beyond what is our known demographic and into the unknown,’ she [Clover English] says. ‘We must evolve to create and nurture new readers.’ But in order to do that she [Clover English] continues, “you must speak to them via a medium to which they’ve grown accustomed. That medium is a visual one.’”
So, fired by these words, I’m wondering if they’re true. How many of you like to watch book trailers and find them influencing your buying decisions and how many of you watch because the trailer is by your favorite writer and you just want to see it? What do you think of BookVideo.tv and RomanceNovel.tv. I’ll give one backlisted copy of one of my books to one poster by 5:00 Wednesday, January 16.
Ciao until next time.

Good morning Karen!
I love watching the trailers, but I don’t know that they actually influence me in buying a book. That’s not saying they don’t, I just can’t remember a particular trailer where I went out and bought the book.
I’ve never been to BookVideo.tv or RomanceNovel.tv, but I’m curious now, so I will have to check those out.

Hi Karen!!
I watch book trailers, but I don’t have to have them. It’s always nice to see how the author envisions her characters, but sometimes that cause misguided assumtions about characters. By that I mean, when you read a book you envision the character in your head, sometimes the trailers don’t meet your expectations. That being said, I use the trailers as entertainment. They have never made me rush out and get book, nor have the detered me from purchasing a book.
As a side note, my daughter saw the trailer for Erin Lynn’s (McCarthy) book “Demon Envy” and her interest was peeked enough to read the excerpt and then to ask for the book. So obviously the trailers work.
Did I confuse you enough? No, just give me time. LOL

Hi Karen,
I don’t think book trailers influence me either way. Actually, I find recommendations and exerpts are what usually catch my interest for some reason. I mean, it’s not that I make an effort NOT to watch them, but I could take ‘em or leave ‘em!

Hi Karen!
I like watching them, some are really well done. I don’t think they influence me but what you said about them being announcements to let readers know that a favorite author has a book out makes sense.

Alas, for those of us with older computer but especially still on dialup, it’s almost impossible to watch these things or to even visit some wonderful sites because of all the pictures and videos etc. I want to guess though that if they are anything like the coming attractions that they use for movies, that I would be influenced

I never watch trailers. I’m also on dialup and it takes too long. I don’t think they would influence me to buy a book. I prefer to read about a book on the author’s site or on the blurb on the back of the book.

I enjoy them. Do they make me want to buy the book? Sometimes but I don’t go out looking for them. If I get a link from one of my groups or if I’m surfing I might click and watch.

Hi Karen,
I have to admit, I’m not the biggest fan of book trailers. Generally they’re just a bunch of text set to music. The graphics, images, etc just can’t compare to a really good summary or excerpt. Therefore, I would say a book trailer does not influence whether or not I’d buy a book.
However, I recently saw a fantastic book trailer - an author held a contest for making a book video, and that one was amazing. I have to admit, it did make me want to run out and get the book. So maybe, it depends on the trailer.

I have not yet seen a book trailer that influenced me to buy the book. That doesn’t mean it can’t happen but I need to read the book blurb and I want to read an excerpt.

Great topic
I love book trailers they don’t always help me buy a book though. I love watching trailers because I like to see who the author picked for the characters and I like to learn more about the books. I enjoy visiting RomanceNovel.tv never heard of BookWideo will check that one out. I have seen alot of great videos it’s fun to watch them
I also enjoy seeing what music the author pick for the trailer to see if it will fit with the book when I read it.

Hi, Karen,
I’m pretty new to book trailers–I’ve seen a couple now, and am in the “they’re OK” camp–fun to watch occasionally, but they don’t influence my book-buying decisions too much. I find that recommendations and reviews hold more sway in my world

Book trailers do not influence me at all. What will attract me more is some recommendations from a person who has similar taste to mine and reading some excerpts.

They don’t influence me either. I don’t like viewing them because my computer takes forever to load them. If they pay a lot of money to the companies to make I think authors should not make them and spend their money on avertising their books other ways.

Acutally if I have to pinpoint the biggest influence on me to buy a book it is word of mouth. I have several friends that like to read and they tell me what are the best books and have you read so and so yet? That is the biggest, all-time influence on me to buy a book.
The second most biggest influence is book covers. Cool art work on a book really draws me in to want to pick it up and read what the book is all about. Third, is book reviews. I read a lot of reviews since I edit books and get a lot of newsletters.
I have not watched many book trailers. I am attracted more by book reviews and the covers I see when I am at the bookstore. I am on blogs a lot! Also, I get gobs of newsletters from different sites so I am exposed to a lot of excerpts, reviews, contests, etc. which influences me a lot more than the trailer does.

Hi Karen,
I just found this and wanted to let you know that I love the idea of book trailers! If Hollywood can spend the big bucks to make trailers to get the public to come and watch their movies, why can’t authors do the same for their work?
I started watching them because Christine Feehan was using them and I loved her Dark series! And thanks to some other wonderful trailers that I’ve seen, both from COS and other companies, I have “discovered” new authors that I may never have read just because I wasn’t familiar with their work. I think it’s a great way to expand your readership if you’re an author.

I have to admit that I’ve been a fan of book trailers since the advent of them - it was actually COS’s first Christine Feehan trailer that got me interested in her Dark Series. I credit trailers with introducing me to more than one author I would have never picked up before because I wasn’t familiar with them or genres I don’t usually read. Prior to trailers I relied on reviews or word of mouth which I still use, I think this is just another creative way to find “new” authors for me and my friends.
I also credit Book Trailers with getting my 13 yr old nephew interested in picking up a book. I think that it is a great tool to market to a generation that has grown accustomed to being more visual than literary.

I got started watching book trailers after seeing christine feehan dark series trailers. I really loved them and it was fun to get a sneak peak at what was coming. I have bought a couple of books from authors I have never heard before after watching a trailer. I really like getting a feel of what the book is going to be about before I go and spend money on a book. Most of the time I get friends recommendations but when I don’t have any these trailers make it nice to figure out my next book purchase

I have to admit that it was the COS book trailers for Christine Feehan that got me interested in them. I loved the first ones but they’ve truly gotten better since then. I love to see how close the actors picked come to what I envision the characters to be. Some are right on and others are very close but not quite. The trailers also give me an idea what to expect in the book and whets my appetite.
Yes, I have definitely purchased books because of a trailer I viewed. I also have a book on my to buy list that I recently viewed the trailer for.

Book trailers are AWESOME!! I watch COS websites and whenever a new book trailer comes out, I watch it and most of the time I buy the books they’re featuring. I also beta test for COS to help improve quality when asked. The videos get better and better. I have some favorite authors and I have picked up some new authors all from COS book trailers. This is an innovative way to reach out to all the readers and, yes the non readers get interested and there you go a new reader.

I LOVE book trailers, and have extented my authors by watchng them and becoming so entranced by the story line I have no choice but to buy the book and read it. LOL
I think that Mrs. Clover-English does a great job with creating the tention and climax (almost) that makes you really want the book. As a matter of fact I have just finished a new book by Francis Ray that I probably wouldn’t have picked up if not for the trailer and a new Series by Raven Hart that if I just looked at it in the store I wouldn’t have given it a second look, but the trailer caught me, so I gave them a try, and I am very glad I did.
