Turkey Day is done and we all ate and ate and ate. I honestly think the leftovers are the best part of all. My favorite thing is the pumpkin pie. Loooove it! But all the Thanksgiving Day flavors together are incredible and as we were scarfing all this yummieness the family got to talking of the not so yumminess foods. Stuff we hate.
For my dh it’s sweet potatoes. He hates those things and I don’t get it at all. I’d eat them just ‘cause they have great color. How can anyone resist that?? My son hates tomatoes. Here we go again…another great color food turned down. One daughter eats around the onion and celery in the stuffing. She has a little shrapnel pile on her plate. The other daughter pulls the raisins from the oatmeal cookies. Me??? I love it all! Guess that’s why I’m a lifetime member of Weight Watchers.
But these are all reasonable foods. What about the not so reasonable? I cannot even watch those reality shows where the people eat live bugs! Dear heaven! A bug is bad enough, but alive! Holy cow!! Makes me sick to watch.
So what about you? What is the grossest thing you ever ate and why in the world did you do it? Were you really that hungry? Probably not, so it was a dare or just plain old curiosity like you had to at least try that chocolate-covered-ant. Or were you having a survivor party of your own?
The grossest thing I ever ate was a moth…and not on purpose. That’s what I got for huffing and puffing my way up a steep hill on a bike. Actually, that’s what I get for being out of shape.
Let us know about the yuckiest thing you ever ate and why. I’ll give away a copy of The Morgue the Merrier from the answers.
Happy Thanksgiving leftovers week.
Hugs,
Dianne Castell

Parsnips - very bitter, & liver - enuf said - lol. Also cant stand angel food cake - too chewy.
Sorry you only asked for one thing. Sure even more will come to me. Not that you asked for more. LOL.

Hey, Pat, I so agree on the liver thing. Gross. Though I do love chicken liver in spinach salad. Parsnips are good about once ever two years…just to remember how bitter they really are. Dunked in brown sugar is their only salvation.

Baked liver is soooo disgusting! Fried liver I will eat.
I abhor onions. I know, they add flavor, blah, blah, blah, but I hate them. They ruin food for me. Peppers I like, even jalapeno peppers, but give me an onion and I cringe.

Beets…yech! I keep wondering who the heck tasted them first and thought they were an actually edible food?!
Nastiest things besides beets I’ve ever eaten…probably a fruit fly (by accident). I hate when gnats fly up your nose or into your mouth when you’re talking! Eeewww!

I ate a chocolate covered cricket in the 7th grade. My “home economic” teacher brought in cavier, crickets, frog legs, squid. She wanted us to be well rounded. Most of us ended up with stomach aches. I hated it all, but I got an “A” in the class. LOL
I love beets and blue cheese in my salad. I HATE liver. I would always pick out the onions and eat them. Fried onions, yummy. Of course, I have also eaten my far share of flies. My grandmother once drank a spider in the middle of the night. Luckly she felt it in her mouth and spat it out on the floor. SO GROSS.

The grossest thing I ever ate was homemade fresh turtle soup.
My cousin’s husband makes it and loves it. I tried to be nice and gave it a reluctant try, but after less than a spoon full I could take any more. He can have it all for himself!

I’ve eaten thousand year old eggs. They aren’t really that old. The eggs are fermented in lye and other things for several months. They come out black and pungent. The taste is sharp, not too disgusting. It’s considered a delicacy in some parts of the world. I’d rather eat this than raisins.

Holy cow!
Having a teacher bring in icky stuff to eat. I think that’s a little too well-rounded.
I love beats and onions and but will pass on turtle soup (love turtles too much) and I cannot imagine eating a thousand year old anything though some stuff in my fridge kind of could pass for it.
I eat escargo (spelling?) and that’s snails. Hate snails in my garden but put enough garlic and butter on the little buggers and they’re good for something.

I don’t mind beets - tried rabbit and escargot and frog legs - didnt care for them much. Also don’t care for deer meat. Don’t like blue cheese or gorgonzola. You reminded me that I don’t like those cheeses.

Blue Cheese and any dressing with vinegar in it. Liver or sauerkraut. Just the smell of anyone of these will turn my stomach.

My oldest son is a vegetarian and back in the 80’s he took me to a really classy vegetarian restaurant, where I had their tofu lasagna. I managed to get about 3 bites down. Worst thing I ever ate - it still makes me queasy just thinking about it (he wouldn’t even eat it!)

I tried limburger cheese and never again! Once when I had a bad cold a relative gave me some to try and it was fine as I couldn’t smell a single thing being so stuffed up. After my cold was gone I was offered the cheese again and I could smell it from way across the room and it wasn’t a good thing. Wow! Never again will I indulge in limburger cheese; I believe it could keep others away for miles as strong as it is.

OK, I agree that bugs and hair are pretty icky! I never liked liver much either, but my mom made it when we were kids because it was supposed to be good for us. Bleh! Have had snails (not a fan), frog legs, etc. And not a fan of those stinky cheeses either
I think the ickiest I’ve had was pig blood, as part of one of those clay pot terrines. It wasn’t so much that the taste was objectionable, but my mind can’t get over what it is… it’d be the same mental block for bugs, I think.

I’ve eaten haggis, which is made out of among other things sheep lungs, liver and heart. I just happened to be in Scotland for Burn’s night (a local holiday) and it’s tradition to eat haggis, neeps (turnips) and tatties (potatoes). It actually doesn’t taste to bad if you don’t think about what’s in it.

Escargot - love them. Liver and anchovies too. Even frog legs. I happen to dislike certain textured foods - coconut, cottage cheese, oatmeal, tapioca - yuk. But anything not cooked that is alive such as bugs has to be the yukkiest. Although I guess it’s all what you’re used to - if it’s not poisonous I guess it’s been eaten.

The yuckiest that showed up yearly at our Thanksgiving table - TURNIPS. My sister said they taste like turpentine. Only good way to have them is with lots of mashed potatoes added in to cut down the taste.

Have you ever seen a sea cucumber! They’re really gross, slimy with tentacles and are called “sea slugs” for a reason. My mom loves to eat them, but I can’t get past their appearance to do that even though I know that you can’t always judge food by that. For instance geoduck which is also odd in appearance is quite tasty with a sweet taste.

I ate a pigeon egg at a Dim Sum restaurant. It was awful. I also had menudo soup at a Mexican restaurant. Yuk! My girlfriend loves it and I have to sit and watch her eat it. She always offers a taste and I always refuse. lol

I have eaten way to many mosquitos in my life time. I used to ride my bike everywhere trying to go as fast as I could. My mouth would invariably be open, thus mosquitos made their way in! Yuck! Just so you know, they taste sweet.
The only other thing I have eaten that was gross was when I was in Florida. I had some aligator. It was not tasty at all! Oh I just remembered that my husband and I went a wild game feast near our home at a restaurant in Indiana. Anyway, we had bear, giraffe, lion, emu, etc. I can’t remember them all now. They all tasted pretty good except for the lion meat. It was absolutely yucky!

Oh, Michele! Sweet mosquitoes. What a hoot. The downside of bike riding.
Kim, what is menudo? Just reading all these strange dishes makes me a little ill.
Hey, Lily, I’ve eaten my share of expired yogourt too. Totally gross. I so need to read what I’m eating. Esp the calories.
Sue, those sea things sound just horrid and, Lauren, eating lung had got to be terrible.
I’m eating a Snickers just reading all these posts. Snickers makes all well.

Chiming in late here — I ate cow’s ears in Spain back in the 70’s. They were appetizers, sort of like pork rinds or something. They were not tasty. I also ate tripas (intestines) and blood sausage. The blood sausage (morcilla) is delicious. Very spicy. I just try not to think about what it is while I’m eating it.

Hi, I am basically a vegetarian, but once in awhile I do eat fish! Some years ago, I went with a friend out to dinner. I had never ordered fish at this particular restaurant before! When it arrived to me. The fish was laying on its side with the eyes still in it. I thought I was going to vomit! My friend was paying, so I decided to attempt to at least partake of part of the fish. That is my yucky food story…..Thanks,Cindi

When my daughter and I went to a lunch at local restaurant, on my plate was few chunks of pinapple, I took a bite of one and had to spit it on the napkin. I love pineapples but that one was rotten (or something). My daughter was laughing at the face I made. I didn’t touch other on the plate.

You all are an daring group!
I love snails…swamped in butter and garlic.
Ivka, bad food out is no fun. What do you do with it? Spit it in the plant and, Cindi, eating fish with the head still in place is scary.
I like to think of fish and beef growing on a tree somewhere already sealed in plastic with the little price sticker attached.
Boy, do I have a great imagination!
