Scared to Death!

Dianne Castell

I hate to be scared and now we’re entering the scariest time of year…except for tax time, of course…Halloween! I’m talking about the movies. Holy cow. I don’t get why people pay good money to get scared out of their pants. Heck, I have a pile of laundry in my closet and a spider in under the porch that will do that for free.

So today I’m talking but the scariest movie you’ve ever seen. I have to admit I am no authority on this at all. I’ve raised four kids and get scared plenty on a regular basis. No kid under forty should be allowed to drive!

I think the scariest movie I ever ventured out to see was Jurassic Park. The kids and I held hands and screamed for two hours. Every time the water vibrated you knew there was a dinosaur coming to eat someone. Then again I did see Silence of the Lambs. That is enough to make you give up Chianti for the rest of your life.

So, what is the scariest movie you’ve ever seen? The Shining? The Exorcist? Texas Chainsaw? What made you nearly wet your drillies or squeeze your dh’s hand so tight to do permanent damage? What is the scariest movie out there now? I’ve seen some trailers and those alone are enough to curl my hair forever. And why in blue-blazes do you think we pay and go to a movie theater to get scared to death?

  1. I dont watch scary movies any longer - just cant do it. But years ago watched Stephen King’s “IT” on t.v. and it creeped me out so much had to watch something very light before I go to bed.

I have to turn away when there are snakes involved or when they play that scary music and you know something or someone is going to jump out.

  2. Before I went to bed I meant to say; sorry poor grammar. LOL.

  3. The last movie that really scared me was Nightmare on Elm Street, and that 20 or 25 years ago. (My dear, sweet brother got up in the middle of the night and stabbed butter knives under my bedroom door, in addition to the movie scaring the hell out of me. Gotta love brothers… )

I don’t find most “scary” movies scary at this point. Just disgusting with all the blood and gore, or sometimes even ludicrous, such as when the “heroes” are so stupid you WANT the monster/murderer to get them and put them out of your misery.

The Ring was pretty creepy, but I was too fascinated by the mechanics involved in making it so creepy to have that visceral fear reaction viewers are supposed to have to scary movies…

  4. Hi Dianne,

we had to watch a really scary movie in school when I was 12, because our teacher didn’t want give our normal lesson. The movie wasn’t for kids under 18 and the movie was on the list of banned movies, because of it horrid scenes. I had nightmares for weeks.

The only “horror” movies that I watch after this was Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Interview with a vampire, but I wouldn’t call them horror movies

  5. Hi Dianne!!!

I am so with you on scary movies! I HATE THEM! I can turn on the evening news and be scared for free, so why pay money to see something scary.

I did watch The Shining when I was a teen. I was babysitting and the little girl I watching just went to bed. There was nothing else to do but watch tv and that was the only thing on. I had seen bits and pieces of it and thought this isn’t so scary. I was so wrong, but I couldn’t turn it off. I think that was the last scary movie I ever saw!

  6. Hi Dianne!!! I don’t do scary either. I hate to be scared, but it wasn’t always so. When I was in high school I was to cool to admit that I hated horror movies, so I went to see Candyman. I couldn’t look in a bathroom mirror for months. I actually would make my brothers stand in the shower with the curtain closed if I had to go at night and I was sixteen. LOL The movie that started my hatred for horror was Hells Night and I say it when I was eight. I watched it with my uncle and aunt (they were teens at the time) and they tortured me with that movie. I seen it in the store one time and it gave me nightmares from the memories. LOL

  7. I’m not a big horror fan. I couldn’t get through 10 minutes of Scream. Nightmare on Elm Street really creeps me out and so do the early Halloween movies. My mom used to try and watch them on Halloween night on TV, I’d hide in the kitchen with the pizza lol

  8. WOW do I have a lot of company on the scary movie scene.
They totally mess with my head, can’t sleep, get soap in my eyes trying to watch the shower curtain to see who’s going to stab me (Never watch Psycho! You’ll stay diryt for a loooong time.)
Give me an adventure movie, chick-flick, funny movie, drama, anything but scared. Life’s too scary as it is!

I’m off to work at the Snoot but I’ll check in tomorrow to see who else hates scary movie.

    Hugs to you all!

  9. I so don’t do scary movies. One time my friend and her bf rented some movies and asked me to stay. The one was so horrible that I pretended I was watching by kept my eyes averted or shut most of the time. I still think about it years later. The stupid thing was that the winner of the best chili had made it from brains I believe and you can guess what I think every time I make chili; and we love chili. Oh yuck!!! Never again.

  10. I’m with you Diane . I don’t read or watch movies to be scared to death.
I haven’t watched a scary movie since the original Hitcher.

  12. Hi Dianne,

I love horror movies. I can’t tell you why specifically because I’m not entirely sure myself. As for my favorite, that’s hard to say…I have quite a few. The Exorcist is right up there, along with The Haunting (the one from 1963). That has to be one of the scariest ever. I think people sometimes need a scary movie to burn of a visceral need for an rush…you know that it’s just a movie and yet you can have that temporary rush. Since I write paranormal and romantic suspense A LOT, you could say I’m always looking to get that thrill and to have it. Sure, there are some horror movies that aren’t actually scary and aren’t very well done. But there are many very well acted, very well done movies in the horror genre for those who like them…like me. :)

  13. Oh I read and watch scary and honestly the movie that scared me the most was called Fire in the Sky. It’s probably 15 years old. It’s about alien abduction AND IS A DOCUMENTED BASED ON FACT STORY. Up until then I always kind of thought of aliens as good guys - like in Encounters of the Third Kind or ET. Well this one just really gets to me.

  14. Someone mentioned CandyMan. Goodness yes, that movie is scary. But, the movie that has scared me the most is Stephen Kings Rose Red. I like the movie, but it gives me the willies!

  15. O.k. I am not a fan of gory movies but as a teenager, my friend and I went and saw ALIEN at a multiplex theater when it first came out. That was the scariest movie that made the most impact on me ever! We were so scared by the scene when the alien pops out of the guys stomach that we left! We went and watched a comedy in the next theater.

The scariest movie that I love the most is SIXTH SENSE. It sent chills down my spine at the end when you figure out what was going on.

  16. Okay, you guys who like all these scary movies… The question is, how do you sleep at night??? How do you stay alone in your house? I’d be scared to death all the time. :-)
There are so many scary movies showing this week. Just seeing the ads for them makes me a wreck!

Miclele, I so agree about Alien. The best part was Sigorney Weaver. One of the first true female kick-ass heroines! The rest of the movie had my hair standing on end but when Ripley went in and saved the little girl! Neat!
