Ever pick up a book with cover art that doesn’t represent what’s inside the cover? Is it disappointing? Oh yeah! Try being an author and getting cover art that doesn’t depict the flavor, tone AND TIME PERIOD of the book. Argh! We just got the cover art for our next Wild, Wild Women of the West anthology and for the second time, they’ve got it all wrong. While they’re sexy and gorgeous, they missed the point.

When you think historical westerns, do picture women wearing blue jeans or do you picture women in corsets and long flowing gowns? Do you picture a woman wearing a halter babydoll nightie? No, duh! Someone in the art department isn’t taking the time to find out that the books are historical and keeps giving us contemporary pictures.

You be the judge. Here are the two covers for Wild, Wild Women of the West I and Wild, Wild Women of the West II. Both have sexy, funny, sexy stories set in the late 1800’s. Did I mention they were sexy? Do either of these covers say “Helloooo, historical western here!!!”? Ever pick up a book expecting one thing by looking at the cover and being surprised by what’s inside? Got an example you want to share?

    That is… unfortunate.

  2. Patty L. Says:

Neither cover would give me any indication that they were historical westerns. But I would pick the book up. I know that doesn’t help much though. Sorry about the misguided art department.

  3. Myla Jackson Says:

Yay Patty! I’m not saying the covers aren’t sexy and the models aren’t great, but having seen some of the historical covers that come out… Wowza! They’re gorgeous. These covers would do well with a title like Girls gone Wild in the West. LOL!

  4. Sharmi Says:

Yeah..they look likethe cover for a contemporary for sure. Especially the first one with the ripped knee in the jeans. I’m sure ladies “back in the day” were not wearing jeans…let along ripped ones! And the second one looks like some kind of “office romance” type of story! Sorry about your bad covers…that really sucks!! It’s not that they are ugly, they just don’t fit!

  5. Shari C Says:

The covers are certainly sexy, but definitely not an indication that the stories inside are historical romances.

  6. kim h Says:

    they are hot.

  7. Estella Says:

If I was looking for a historical, I don’t think I would pick up these if I was going by cover alone.

  8. RobynL Says:

I don’t think either depicts a historical. I wouldn’t think this was the genre by
    the cover.

  9. Angie T Says:

I picked up this book once that had a cartoon character of a bride and groom on it.
Very contemporary looking. I even read the cover blurb.
When I actually started reading it, I had one of those WTF moments…it was a historical! I swear I thought htey had put the wrong book into this cover! Not that I minded, the story was actually very good, but the cover and the blurb totally misled me!

I gotta agree with Sharmi…the covers aren’t bad…the first one is actually verra
sex-ay..but they do not scream “historical contents” to me!
