Series/Sequels Books - Love ‘em or hate ‘em?

Myla Jackson

Are you one of those people who get to the end of the book and wish there was more to the story? Or are you glad you got a satisfactory ending and all your characters are living happily ever after? If you’re one of the former, do you wait anxiously for the next book to come out by that author? Are you like all the Harry Potter fans waiting at midnight for the next book to go on sale so you can live the next adventure at Hogwarts? If this sounds like you, you’re a series/sequel lover.

This topic has come to my attention more and more in the past few months. I write for multiple publishers under different names and the emails I’ve received from fans lately are to:

1. tell me “I loved XXXX”

2. ask me would he/she see the same characters in another book? Or would I be writing the secondary character’s stories?

I had this happen with my TROUBLE Series with Ellora’s cave. I have 2 books in that series so far and still need to wrap it up with the 3rd and final. I had fans write and tell me they loved my EC Quickie SHEWOLF and when was I going to write the brothers’ stories. (The first brother’s story comes out in December - THORN’S KISS).

There is a point to this rambling. Really.

Reading is an escape into your characters’ lives. When you’re captivated by those characters, you want to go on living in their lives and experiencing the adventure, emotions and love they are. It’s like losing a part of you when you finish that book.

That’s the beauty of sequels. Not only do the readers get to read on and revisit the characters they’ve grown to love, but the writers get to see them again. That world they spent time building and getting to know comes alive again on the computer screen. It’s fabulous to see your characters again. Sequels aren’t just for the readers, the writers love writing the next story including those characters from the previous.

What about you? Do you like series/sequels? Do you have a fave?

  1. I usually love series/sequels as I like to revisit favorite characters and find out more about others mentioned in earlier books. The only problem with series is the wait for the next book to come out…ha,ha. I enjoy various series/sequels such as J R Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series, Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty series, Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter series, Charlaine Harris’s series on Sookie Stackhouse, Jenna Black’s Guardians of the Night series and Christine Feehan’s Drake Sisters series to name a few. Their are so many wonderful series/sequels to choose from and I love reading them.

  2. Love series, thank you very much!!! LOL :) Yep, totally agree, it’s the waiting for the next one that is the problem. :)

  3. Love the JD Robb Death series, Christine Feehans Drake series.

  4. Hey Myla! I like series books, but I like each book to be able to “stand alone”. JD Robb’s series is a good example. You don’t have to have read book 4 to read book 20.

I just read book one in Karen Moring’s new series. It leaves the reader hanging. I didn’t like that because there is SOOOO LOONNNGGG before the next book. So I’ll probably wait until that whole series is done and out to buy it. I realize that’s not good for the author, but when books continue and the storyline continues, I’ll forget in a year what happened.

Bet you’re surprised I found you, huh?

  5. Hi Cyndi and everyone else! I know what you mean about waiting for the next book. I have a bad memory. I’ll forget about it. But Cyndi, you shouldn’t wait until all the books come out. Sometimes they go out of print! You’ll be kicking yourself if you miss one of them.

  6. Hey Myla!
Unfortunatley, I am a series ‘ho! I live in fear that I am going to discover a new author that I must have (and can’t afford to buy all the series at once!)
I love Kim Harrison, Sherrilyn Kenyon/Kinley MacGregor, JR Ward, Rachel Gibson, Charlaine Harris, Barry Eisler, Harlan Coben, JD Robb, MJ Davidson, KMM, and Patricia Briggs ….just to name a few.

  9. I have a love-hate relationship with series because I do love them, but hate to get started when there’s already 10 books to it. I wouldn’t mind shorter series, because I’m already taking the time for certain series that I consider “must-buys”. Even if they are stand-alone, I must start at the beginning. So if I find out a book is part of a series, especially if it’s book #3 or whatever, I may hesitate and actually not even buy it. Now isn’t that a shame? I think so.

  10. If I find a series I love, I have to get all the previous books - I dont have to wait to get them all to read it order.

I love all of Sherryl Woods series books, Delinsky’s Dream and Matchmaker Series, Nora’s Dream series and Chesapeake Bay, Carly Phillips Hot Zone and Chandler Brothers, Macomber’s Angel series and Knitting series, Linda Howard’s series books which include Ssarah’s Child and Bluebird Christmas, etc., Maureen Child’s Candelloni, Susan Mallery’s Marcelli and Buchanan, Janelle Denison’s Wilde, Catherine Anderson’s Kendrik/Colter, Rachel Gibson’s Idaho books, Kathy Love Stepp Sisters, Marilyn Pappano’s Bethlehem Series; I could go on and on - arent you glad you asked? LOL. And oh yes, how could I forget Sheridon Smythe’s “Completely” series - the covers are hot, too.

I love revisiting previous characters in the new book.

  11. I love series, especially if I “discover” one when there are already 10 books in it. No waiting months to indulge the new addiction! A lot of my faves have been mentioned already, but I’ll add Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series, Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark, Marjorie Liu’s Dirk & Steele (which are very stand-alone), Charlie Huston’s Joe Pitt books, Lynn Viehl’s Darkyn, Shana Abe’s drakon books (also very stand-alone)…

Hmm. Do I own anything that isn’t part of a series? :???:
