Thank God it’s Monday.

Weekends are killing me.

This is how weekends went when I was a kid:

· Sleep late;

· Watch cartoons (Land of the Lost, anyone?);

· Help clean the house;

· Grumble about helping clean the house;

· Have a reward lunch of White Castle cheeseburgers of Skyline Chili dogs;

· Get kicked out of the house for fresh air;

· Play;

· Stare at walls;

· Play;

· Read;

· Bath;

· Bed.

Here’s how weekends go now:

· Jump out of bed;

· Soccer game;

· Soccer game;

· Birthday party (not my friends);

· Other miscellaneous lessons, chauffeuring, and errands;

· Homework (not my own);

· Consider and ultimately reject idea of cleaning house;

· Fall, exhausted, into bed;

· Repeat on Sunday.

And what’s with the two soccer games per weekend per kid? Are we training for the Olympics or the World Cup? Is that it? Did I miss a memo along the way? What happened to kids sitting around being kids, trying to find something to do?

Please tell me I’m not the only one lamenting the lost weekend. What about you? Who had the busiest weekend? Comments, please. I’d love to give away a bundle of gently used books at the end of the day.

    You must be really young still to be able to remember you weekends as a kid! ;-) Or I must be getting really old. I do remember going to the beach on some weekends with friends all day and watching all the guys. We’d get up really early and catch the bus, spend the day there and have a blast, come home burnt. :roll: Then there were other times when we went to the mall and just hung out there and shopped, we’d make a day of it. :lol:

    The weekends go fast, don’t they? I spent mine taking a couple loads of clothes to my parent’s house to do laundry because my washer’s leaking. Then I had to take my daughter’s eyeglasses to be fixed because they mysteriously “fell” and got mangled. I don’t remember what happened to the rest of the weekend. :shock:

  3. Laurie Says:

    Friday night attended JBHS football game.
    Saturday swam, made breakfast for family, read, 10:30 drove youngest son to SHSclub car wash(11-2) got groceries , drove home made lunch, 2PM picked son up, drove home, made dinner(spinach pie and hamburgers) for family while watching(3:30) UF college football game on TV. 4:30 drove to friend’s daughter’s (Lisa’s) wedding shower(5-10). Drove home, showered 11PM bed.
    Sunday 7AM swam made breakfast, read, made lunch watched NFL football(Colts vs Titans) while trying to get updates on the Packers. 1:30 drove son to friend’s house. 3:30 made dinner for family. 5:30 picked son up. 6PM took 5 mile walk with husband in neighboring subdivision. 7:30 Drove home , showered and ate dinner. Bed at 10:30
    Not very exciting but the weekend sure went by in a blur. First time that I went to an evening shower, I definitely prefer afternoon ones!!

    Friday night, nephew and niece stayed over. Saturday, still had niece and nephew to watch for most of the day. Sunday, niece and nephew came down. Nephew had a crick in his neck and he was sick. He didn’t feel good all day yesterday. I took them home around 7 so they could get ready for school for today.

  5. Karen Kelley Says:

    I wrote and inbetween that, I sort of swiped at the furniture. I cooked a peach cobbler–fresh peaches that I put up this year, which hubby took to work with him for a function there. We really need more hours in the day. LOL

  6. Karen B Says:

    Nap, nap and nap again! Trying to recoup from sinus, allergies, and all the yuckie cold symptoms. A nap is calling my name right now…

  7. Lois Says:

    Well, no kids here and presently not in school so I don’t have any papers or such to write. . . so all I really do is be on the computer and read. But we are fixing up the house so that does take some of that time up. LOL But still, I don’t always have the time I’d like to for reading, especially by the time I get off the computer at times, so yep, more hours! :)

    i helped my fiance settle into university this weekend, and i have to settle into MY university next weekend. i know how you feel.

  9. Linda Says:

    The weekends sure do go fast especially when your not doing something fun that you want to do :roll: :lol: This weekend I helped my sister in law clean up & move thing around in her house. She is having a baby boy in November. Can’t wait :) The cleaning part was fun but the thought of her having a baby soon is very exciting.

    Hugssss

    And that would be why I fell to my knees and praised the heavens when my kid said he didn’t want to play soccer. I might be exaggerating a touch, but not that much. I did however, volunteer to have a sleepover, thereby doubling the number of boy children in my home at one time. Ah iz stoopid.

    And my fave Saturday cartoon was X-Men.

  12. Shari C Says:

    I thought all my running was behind me as my kids are grown and have kids of their own…what a dream that was. Now most week-ends are spent going to the grandkids sports events or concerts or taking care of them while their parents have to go somewhere. In between that have all the regular errands to run, house to clean, meals to make that now include the grand children and usually one of my kids makes it here in time to join us…strange how that happens a lot…ha,ha. Then this week-end on Saturday I had a luncheon with several friends I used to work and on Sunday we had a get together at one of the local bar & grills to watch the football game. In between that we are having an automated watering system installed in our yard so that looks quite the mess and today they are coming to install several new windows in our house that needed replacement. I think I will just go back to bed, pull the covers up over my head and hide for a while or at least until this evening when we have to go to a track meet for one of the grand-daughters.

  13. Maureen Says:

    I spent the weekend with visiting my parents and siblings. I haven’t seen anyone in a while so it was good but then it’s exhausting and, of course, there is still housework and laundry that didn’t get done.

  14. kim h Says:

    watch football and teh emmys.

  15. RachaelfromNJ Says:

    I didn’t do anything all weekend. I felt crappy and just layed around like a bum. Now I am suffering because I have to do all this laundry on a Monday which sucks.

  16. Laidybyrd Says:

    Boy, I don’t envy kids these days with their programmed “free” time. I remember playing outside, making up games, just laying in the grass looking at the sky, “camping” in the backyard. Now that I’m retired and the grandkids live on the other side of the country, things move at whatever pace I choose. So this weekend I went to the library, took a bunch of stuff to the thrift shop, threw away some other stuff in an attempt to clean out the laundry room/storage area and finished reading Paolini’s Eldest.

  17. danette Says:

    I loved my naps too like KarenB. I remember my summers as a teen where every weekend I’d go to Great America(think its a six Flags now), I don’t see how I didn’t get tired of it..lol.

  18. Cherie J Says:

    I know what you mean. Added to my usual everyday tasks of feeding the baby multiple times through the day, changing the baby’s diaper multiple days, cleaning her two teeth, dressing her, bathing her, and brushing her hair, preparing food for the 4 year old, getting his clothes, brushing his teeth, bathing the 4 year old, I also have the added joy of doing the laundry, cleaning what I can of the house since I couldn’t get much of it done during the week ( see above list for reason why),doing grocery shopping and trying to fit 30 minutes of exercise in between all of that. Sleep late? What is that?. The baby is a terrible sleeper. We are thrilled when she actually sleeps through the night. Come Monday morning hubby and I are exhausted and wondering how we are going to get through the week. I like to tease him that at least he gets to escape to work for awhile. I love my kids but I sure do miss those days of lazy weekends. I wish I had appreciated them more.

  19. sabrina Says:

    I was busy cooking a meal for a family celebration. Thism eant an all day marathon cooking which I love since it is rare for everyone to get together and I enjoy cooking and baking. But the effort and the clean up part is not the most fun. But SUnday was wonderful since I was able to read, workout and just take it easy. Yes, when I was much younger we did not have to be going and doing. Life was much for contented and relaxed for kids and grown ups. We played and enjoyed things more.

  20. catslady Says:

    My daughters are raised so no more running around with them (kinda miss it - well kinda lol). I was able to make a movie this weekend which I haven’t done in a while - The Brave One - highly recommended. I only have to cook for two now but one daughter still lives at home (works 2 jobs, college, boyfriend so I hardly see her) but I do take care of 7 inside cats and ferals/strays outside. I guess I just have to nurture something lol. Then there’s always the housecleaning and yardwork that never seems to go away.

  21. Estella Says:

    Altho it has been 20 years since I had a child in sports, I know exactly what you mean.

  22. jenna Says:

    I did not race around since weekends are a time to spend with my mother, due to the fact that my father died suddenly this summer, at 56. We go out together and I help with the housework and cooking etc. Soon I will be back to school and only home on weekends which will be an adjustment. Life goes on and we have to adapt and be strong.

  23. Christy Says:

    My husband sometimes teases me and says he thinks I save all of the household and yard chores until the weekend when he is home. Not only can we never get everything accomplished, but with fall just around the corner, the days are even shorter!

  24. Pamk Says:

    i drove 6 hrs friday to RAW in ky and then we had so much fun all day long every day. Survived on 6 hrs sleep per night and then drove 6 hrs home Sunday. lol. I was very busy playing.

  25. RobynL Says:

    My weekends as a youngster were spent cleaning house, doing laundry in a wringer washer and hanging clothes on an outside line whenever feasible, washing the cream separator and weeding the farden in summer. It was very different from my sister’s kids who are into sports and there is always a game, practice or try-out.

  26. Pat L Says:

    The weekends are never long enough. I always think I will get a lot done and never do. Oh, well.

  27. Pat L Says:

    Oh, I forgot you asked what we did.

    I went to a wedding on Sat, visited my dad in the nursing home, went food shopping, straightend up a bit and cooked a few meals for the weeks. Am tired, just thinking about it.

  28. Ann Christopher Says:

    Wow! We’re a busy group, aren’t we! I’m exhausted just reading about all the stuff we did this weekend!

    Jenna, I’m so sorry to hear about your father.

    Laurie, I think your frenzied weekend deserves a reward, so I’m giving you the book bundle! Please e-mail your address to me at ann@annchristopher.com.

    Thanks for the great comments! I gotta go rest up for this weekend …

    Until next time–

    Ann :grin:

    Thanks so much ANN!!

    I’m going to weddings on Sept 21st and 28th! Both friends of my daughter, both are 24 years old. Who says romance is dead!

    Hope that everyone has a wonderful week! We’re getting some much needed rain, but I could do without the thunder & lightning!!

  33. Laurie Says:

    I was unable to get through via the above info…. so I went to your website’s contact area. Hope that was OK! THANKS AGAIN!

  34. Ranurgis Says:

    Well, a lot of psychologists, educators and doctors say that children don’t get enough time these days to really just play–and that means without TV, Nintendo and all the other modern machinery and technology. They are no longer moving around enough–though it certainly sounds as if yours are getting enough exercise, nor are they trying to find common articles to play with.

    All this is to the children’s detriment since there are few times to use their imagination in play. I know how contented the neighbors’ kids were when they stayed with my mother while she was waiting to get grandchildren. They loved to use boxes and pots and pans; blocks and whatever to build their own fanciful buildings. All the animated toys that children *must* have nowadays are fun for Christmas Day or their birthday only. The next day they want something more creative, even if it’s building a highway with bridges out of paper and blocks for their little cars. And the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles shell out megamoney just because the advertisers say that *this* is the toy to have this year.

    I must find out which of his two favorite Christmas gifts he’s playing with most: his clunky “raptor” or the “computer” with all sorts of learning programs.
