Look to this day:
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence;

The bliss of growth
The glory of action
The splendor of beauty.
For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision,
But today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this day…
Such is the salutation to the dawn.
There are several variations of this ancient Sanskrit poem which is sometimes attributed to Kalidasa. I often read this version (and other pieces that catch my fancy) early in the morning before the rush of the day begins.
Today it seemed particularly poignant—and my thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones.
Do you have a favorite piece of writing—or a quote—that inspires you?

2 of my favorites are:
TODAY by Pearl Yeadon McGinnis
I have no yesterday, Time took them away;
Tomorrow may not be—But I have today.

FOR A CONTENTED LIFE by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Health enough to make work a pleasure.
Wealth enough to support your needs.
Strength to battle with difficulties and overcome them.
Grace enough to confess your sins and forsake them.
Patience enough to toil until some good is accomplished.
Charity enough to see some good in your neighbor.
Love enough to move you to be useful and helpful to others.
Faith enough to make real the things of God.
Hope enough to remove all anxious fears concerning the future.

One of my favorite quotes: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

Shari, Estella, April & Kim h–if you send me your details and addresses at tessa@tessaradley.com, I’ll send each of you a copy of The Kyriakos Virgin Bride!
Shari, I haven’t seen that Goethe quote - thanks for that, I’m going to add that to my file of inspiring snippets. April, I like that quote too!
Estella, I like it :-)
Kim h, nice ‘talking’ to you earlier….I think I did choose a winner. I’ll check back on that. Mind you, the last couple of months have been hectic, so I could have had a very blank moment. I’m glad you like the photo. I took it at dawn earlier this year. It’s from a hilltop overlooking the the sea. I love sharing photos…I think you can tell :-)
Take care,
Tessa

My mother used to quote this to me a lot as I was growing up: “I am the captain of my ship, and the master of my fate.” This was before women’s lib so she was really ahead of her time.
