Fantasy Heroes

Gail Barrett

Would someone please tell me what is so great about Brad Pitt? I’m serious. I mean, he’s okay. He’s hardly ugly. But he sure doesn’t make my heart throb. I see him on the tabloids at the check out stands, in People Magazine when I’m at the dentist. He made the news again this week when a crazed fan at a film festival threw herself into his arms.

And I don’t get it. Why does everyone think he’s so great? He just looks too pretty to me, too boyish and classically handsome in a “fake model” kind of way. Beard stubble grown to an exact length. Features too regular. I just can’t see what all the hoopla is about.

I guess I like guys who are messier, more real. Tough, cynical, dangerous guys. Guys with a sexy, harder edge.

So of course, that’s the kind of hero I write. And that leads to the obvious question — if my upcoming book (Heart of a Thief) were made into a movie, who would I want to play the lead?

The hero of that book, Luke Moreno, is a very physical guy — he scales rooftops, disarms the bad guys, climbs down cliffs. So we need a guy who isn’t afraid to get dirty. And he’s a Spaniard, dark. So that lets out Sean Bean, unfortunately, even though he looked tough and dirty enough in the Sharpe’s Rifles series.

Hugh Jackman? He isn’t Spanish (minor problem), but I could see him as Luke. Maybe. I’ve seen him mostly in comedies, so he might not be tough enough. Or dark enough. But at least he seems like a regular guy.

A better possibility might be Antonio Banderas, but without the slicked-back hair. He’s the right nationality, at least. Maybe with some beard stubble… I’d say he’s my leading contender right now.

So what do you think? Any suggestions for a dark, rough hero?

  1. I’ve never understood the appeal of Brad Pitt either! Of course, I used to never get the appeal of Antonio Banderas either. Then I saw The Mask of Zorro. He won me over and now I think he’s quite the hunk. :)

  2. Clive Owen. There is something about him that just screams alpha male…and he is dark. He could pull off Spanish, I’m thinking! ;-)

  3. Gerard Butler is my pick for any hero. Also Viggo ala Aragorn with the long darker hair.

I’ve only found Brad attractive in one movie…Fight Club. It’s also one of my favorite movies, and Edward Norton is in it, so that helped. He was very unconventional in that movie, his head was shaved, he had scars, and dressed in crazy clothes.

  4. Angie - YES. I just got back from a dental appt and while I was in the waiting room, they had an interview with Clive Owen on the TV. And I even wrote his name down because I was thinking that he could work. Great minds think alike!

Vivi Anna - I’m going to google the actors you recommended right now…..

  5. I agree with you about Brad Pitt. My favorite is Johnny Depp.

by Estella on September 5th, 2007 at 2:50 pm

  6. Well, I considered Johnny Depp. He would be a contender, but I thought Antonio might work better. But if they put Johnny Depp in the movie, every girl in America would go see it, so that would be good. I know my high school students used to be nuts about him, so he would really pull in the fans.

  7. Add me to that list too. Glad to hear I’m not the only one. I like all the above suggestions and would add Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix.

  8. I too never saw the appeal in Brad Pitt. He is o.k. but not drop dead gorgeous. I go for the tall, sexy macho type. My husband would be a good pick since he is italian, dark brown curly hair, sexy mustache, big muscular arms, great abs, tiny waist and the cutest butt! Sorry, I know, I need to mention an actor. O.k. hmm……..

Well, Pierce Brosnan used to be my favorite. How about Clive Owen or Keannu Reeves? He was awesome in the Matrix!

  9. Well, Italians are great. ;-) I never thought about Keannu Reeves, Michele, but he might work, too.
Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. I already have the sound track in mind, so if Hollywood ever calls, I can make some casting suggestions as well!!!!

  10. I agree with you, Pitt is too pretty.

You picked some goodies. I like Clooney, Scott Foley from The Unit, John Stamos and the Weatherly guy from NCIs who is kinda of pretty tho’ not hard edge. There is something about the bad boy persona.

  11. Wow - there is no competiton - I aint a Brad Pitt fan either - BUT talk about the multi talented Hugh Jackman and then I do have a word or two to say.Watch Swordfish or any othe 3 Xmen Films plus the Van Helsing and you have one helluva an actor there.
Close our eyes and then we have the most talented actor who can woo you wit comedy, drama, music, dancing, singing dancing and can flow from stage to screenwith the greatest of east.. Have you seen his performance in Erskinville Kings for example this is really a tour de force

Cllony, Foley et all aint got the talent or the looks or the physique abd Hugh is so very very handsome with a wonderful personaility, charisma and sense of fun - what more would you like ……………

by Anne Hedley on September 6th, 2007 at 3:13 pm

  12. Well, Anne. I don’t think many people are going to argue with you. Hugh would be hard to top. And they could probably make him look a little darker if need be. Wouldn’t it be fun to watch all these guys audition???? Not that they have to do that anymore, but still…

by Gail Barrett on September 6th, 2007 at 3:29 pm

  13. I agree with you Gail; and they could auditon for me any time.

by Pat L on September 8th, 2007 at 5:12 am

  14. I also do not find Brad Pitt attractive in the least. I’m always amazed at all the hoopla over him.
As for a dark hero types… check out some of the soccer stars..there are some awesome looking guys!

by Laurie on September 8th, 2007 at 6:01 am

  15. Laurie, I agree. I guess that’s why it amazes me that they make such a fuss over Brad Pitt. There are so many other guys out there who are MUCH better looking. But I guess it’s all a matter of taste. ;-)

by Gail Barrett on September 8th, 2007 at 7:01 am

  16. You don’t like Brad Pitt? To me that’s like saying “I don’t like chocolate” or “I don’t eat sugar.” Brad is my all-time favorite hunk fantasy! I think he’s gorgeous. His breakout role as Tristan in the film ‘Legends of The Fall’ is one I’ll never forget. Dear God, the man is spectacular! Give me Brad any day! :) Please!

by Adele Dubois on September 8th, 2007 at 2:42 pm

  17. Well, Adele - I think millions of other fans agree with you. Luckily for all of us, tastes differ!
