Book Series: Love Them or Hate Them?

Elizabeth Hoyt

The third and final book in my Princes trilogy, The Serpent Prince, debuts in a little less than a week, so book series are on my mind at the moment. As an author, I love having the space of several books to arc out a character. A character might start as the hero’s sidekick, or even the villain before growing enough to have a book of his own. Backstories can be woven throughout a series, pricking the reader’s interest.

As a reader, I like most series. I like anticipating when a favorite character will get his or her book. I like being able to follow a group of friends or a family and seeing some of the members return in subsequent books. But sometimes series can be a problem.

When the series has gone on for several books over many years, I have to confess that sometimes I forget what character had a quarrel with which other character and who was the one who had a deep fear of horses and why. Sometimes I like to pick up a book and know it doesn’t have any baggage and I don’t have to rack my feeble memory to understand the inside jokes.

So how do you feel about series? Do you have a favorite series you’ve been following for years? Do you hate series and don’t even bother? Let me know and I’ll pick one person to win an autographed copy of The Leopard Prince!

Cheers!
Elizabeth

  2. This question is asked a lot and I love it! I absolutely adore series books - it gives us a chance to see how our previous characters are doing and makes us wait with anticipation for the next book. So hard to pick a favorite so here are some of my favs:

  5. I really enjoy series, but admit that if it is one spanning several years, I sometimes run into problems remembering details etc. Examples of series that i love are, Kim Harrison’s one that begins with Dead Witch Walking, and the Diana Gabaldon Outlander and subsequent books with Jamie and Claire.

  6. I love series books. The most recent series I have read has been Sherryl Woods’ Sweet Magnolias Trilogy. I’m on the last book and I don’t want it to end. Now I know that isn’t a series that goes on year after year, but it is my most recent. For continuing series, I love the Dark Hunters and of course the J.D. Robb In Death Books. I also like series by Robin Cook (Jack Stapleton and Laurie) and Michael Connelly (Harry Bosch) for my suspense fix. The Wallflower series by Lisa Kleypas is great and I’m looking forward to finally starting your series as well. I know there are many more but I’ll stop for now.

  7. I usually enjoy series but I like them to be trilogies. Nora Roberts has written several of them and I like the way a plot can continue beyond one book. Like you I have a hard time remembering what’s going on when the series goes on for too long and it’s also aggravating when you read a book in a series and can’t find the other ones if you like it.

  8. I love book series some of my favorites are as follows: (1) Dark-Hunter by Sherrilyn (2) Dark series by Christine Feehan (3) Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz and (4) the alaphabet series by Sue Grafton.

  9. I love them, as long as I am able to get every book of the series, anyway. One of my favorites is in Death series by J.D. Robb.

  10. I love series books. It is so much fun to revisit with favorite characters and find out how they are doing. A few of my favorite series are:

    1)Christine Feehan’s Shadowalker series
    2)Jaquelyn Frank’s Nightwalker series
    3)Robin Owens summoning series
    4)Gena Showalter’s Atlantis series
    5)Nalini Singh’s psy -changeling series
    6)Laren Dane’s Witches Knot series

  11. Yes and no. I loved the Jean Auel Earth Children series but it’s taken 10 years and she still has one more to go I believe. Even Harry Potter took forever. Trilogies at least don’t usually have that problem. I hate when I inadvertently buy a book in a middle of a series - do I go out and buy the first ones not knowing if I care for it or the author? I hate to read out of order lol. And what if I can’t find some of the series? Sometimes I wait and then end up reading them all at once and sometimes it’s a little too much at once. I have 6 of the Outlander series sitting here because I think there are more to come but knowing how long it will take me will make me hesitate. Gee I guess it sounds like more of a no than a yes lol.

  12. I’m with catslady, too. Yes and No. I love series, but sometimes we get introduced to a seconardary character and its just pure torture waiting and waiting for their book!!! And sometimes the build up is too great and even when we get the story its a let down. Agh.

Love your Prince series and I’m looking forward to Serpent Prince. Can you give us any hints about your next series?

    Thanks.

  16. I love series. After reading all of the other comments, I have to agree with most of their recommended series. I personally adore SEP’s Chicago Stars and Carly Philips, Hot Zone. I love to follow up with my characters to see their growth. I also love Katherine Caskie’s lastest historic series.

by Patty L. on August 21st, 2007 at 8:40 pm

  17. Great comments, everyone! So it looks like series are still going strong. I have to admit that my family ran out and bought TWO Harry Potter books when the final one came out–we didn’t want any fighting between siblings!

And as for the book giveaway . . . CATSLADY, please contact me via my website at: www.elizabethhoyt.com and I’ll send you an autographed copy of THE LEOPARD PRINCE!

Thanks for the discussion and goodnight everyone!
