Wedding fever!

Susan Stephens

Yours Truly, disguised as Mother of the Groom…

I write about love and marriage all the time, but last Saturday was one of the best days of my life when my son married his beautiful French fiancee in Paris. Those of you who read my blog over at www.susanstephens.net are following the story of that incredible day… the pre-wedding party, the marriage ceremony, the reception at the chateau, followed by the party in the evening…

Just to whet your appetite, here’s the bride arriving with her father…

Solene made me so happy when she found time to pose for a photograph before her wedding with her new family- that was such a thrill for us.

I’ll be posting lots more photos of that wonderful day, and of course my theme for today’s competition just has to be wedding stories.
Do stop by and chat, and I will be picking out our winner at random over the weekend.

And there are more contests over at my Susan Stephens site- especially our new one for the month of August. I look forward so much to welcoming you there.

Those wedding stories can be funny, or poignant, or even a catalogue of mishaps you wouldn’t believe- a friend of mine told me about a marriage she attended where the marquee blew down, the wedding car, fortunately empty at the time, crashed (no one hurt, thank goodness!), and as the bride prepared to walk down the aisle the organ broke and when the organist panicked a member of the congregation had to rescue the situation by playing the bridal music on the piano!
But that too turned out to be the most wonderful wedding, because everyone pulled together to make sure the bride and groom had a day to remember.

I’m sure you’ve got some fantastic stories to share, and I can’t wait to hear them.

Happy reminiscing to you all!

  2. :!: Oops…well, I forgot to say that I haven’t been to any weddings where there was a mishap that was large. During our wedding the photographer came so late that we couldn’t take most of the posed formal photographs until after. We were lucky that one member of the family is also a great photographer and he took some photos that were actually far better than the so-called professional. :) It absolutely POURED rain on our wedding day. That didn’t turn out to be too much of a mishap, though.

  3. Denise, I agree with you- if everyone pulls together the wedding is going to be a happy one whatever the fates throw at it.

My son’t wedding reminded me of a great engine with lots of little cogs all pulling together to make things work out well for the bride and groom. Even the smallest effort on the part of a friend- like chasing off to find the one missing guest for the group photograph- contributed to the day making it perfect.

Thank you for your input- I’m sure the rain didn’t spoil a thing for you- it’s the good wishes of everyone you care about that warms you on a day like that!

I’m sure there must be some funny stories out there too…

We can’t wait to hear them!

  4. Susan,
I love the photos! Your daughter-in-law looks absolutely beautiful in her gown. I don’t have any wedding stories to share. My husband and I just went to the courthouse to get married. I didn’t want a big wedding since my family lives in NJ and I’m in Texas. Right now, I’m getting very anxious because I’m flying with my 3 year son early tomorrow morning (7am) which means I have to be up in the middle of the night so we can be at the airport by 5:30 and I’m hoping my son falls asleep and that the plane is on time. We’re flying to the Philadelphia airport where my family will be picking us up. My husband can’t come with us because he is busy at work and we also have pets. I’m staying with my mom for two weeks. I’m sorry I got off the subject of weddings. I think weddings are wonderful because they signify two lives and their families joining together. I love my mother-in-law. You would think she was my real mom because we talk every day on the phone and are really close. She taught me how to sew and we always discuss books.

  5. Your photos are beautiful and congratulations to your son and new daughter-in-law.

I don’t have a story to share as my husband and I had a very small wedding at our church and everything went as planned…which was quite surprisingly in itself after some of the wedding horror stories you hear. We also had a gorgeous weather day of sunshine and almost 40 degrees considering it was on Valentine’s Day in wintery Minnesota. Talk about being lucky!

  6. Congratulations to your son and your family! Your pictures are beautiful.

During our wedding my husband and I started laughing during the vows ( I think somebody said something wrong) so we couldn’t look at each other for a while until the giggles had stopped.

  7. Susan, Congratulations to your son and new daughter-in-law. I love the pictures. Can’t say I’ve been to any weddings that have had something gone wrong. I haven’t been to very many, but the ones I have been to have been beautiful and if something was a miss I wasn’t aware of it.

  8. What lovely pictures Susan. :) Congratulations to your son and new daughter-in-law. The only thing that happened that could have been a disaster for my wedding was when the place I was to have my reception was closed the evening we were to decorate and it took forever to hunt someone down to open the facility. I sat on the sidewalk in front of the building and cried like a baby. Thank goodness we were able to locate someone. Everyone who saw me at the rehearsal kept asking me what was wrong because I had puffy eyes from crying so hard. After this, the wedding went perfectly and our 4th anniversary is on Thursday. :)

  9. Congrats on your son’s wedding. The pics are beautiful and memoerable. Weddings are so emotional and special. It takes a lot out of you to plan them and then they are over in no time and we have to recover from the few days of celebration. My son’s wedding was beautiful and everyone enjoyed themselves. The only thing that marred it was the bride’s father who was an impossible and totally repugnant individual so we avoided him the entire time.

  10. Janet, don’t apologise, you have a lot on your mind right now.
How lovely to hear about the relationship you have with your mother in law; what a blessing to add to your family in such a happy and positive way.

And Shari and Janet, I had a small wedding too. Just a handful of guests and a small reception at my mother’s house. It doesn’t matter, though, does it, if you’re pledging the rest of your life to the person you love?

Maureen, you’re in good company- some of our most highly publicised royal weddings over here in the UK feature princes and princesses muddling up each other’s names!

You see, Tammy, you’re so right, we only see the best of things when there’s so much love around- it’s the stress leading up to the wedding, I think, that makes everyone anxious.

Oh, Crystal, we all feel for you. I just know how you must have felt- but like any good dress rehearsal, you got all the snags out of the way before the wedding :-)

Thank you all so much for your congratulations, it really was one of the very best days of my life. (and I’ve had 2 calls from the honeymooners- so they still need me just a little bit- even if its only to ask the doctor to fax their medical records so they can take a diving course!!!) We need to feel needed, don’t we, ladies?!

I’m just about off to bed now, but I’ll be back in the morning to chat some more, and to choose a winner at random from all your lovely messages.

Thank you in the meantime for taking part.

    Sleep well and happily,

With all my best from the UK

  11. Congratulations!

My husband was late for our wedding. He finally arrives and gets to the front of the church and turns to tell his mom (in his booming voice) - I ran out of gas! So everyone was laughing their heads off while I started down the aisle. Just the night before I reminded him to get gas.(and after 38 yrs. of marriage he still ignores me lol). He had just bought a new sports car and him and the best man ended up pushing it down the street in their tuxes to a gas station. At the time he didn’t realize that it was just out of gas. It was an english car and the mechanic was saying he didn’t know a darn thing about those kind of cars but thank heavens for a little kid standing nearby who shouted “Hey, mister, does it have any gas?”

My daughter is getting married next year so I’m sure I’ll have another story or two lol.

  12. A wedding that I attended recently was like a fairytale wedding. The theme was just gorgeous, done in beautiful pastel colors with the wedding party blending in perfectly. The bride and groom were the most adorable and good looking couple and have a great future ahead of them. It was so wonderful to see this happiness and beauty surrounding everyone.

  13. Congratulations all around!!!
My first wedding the little ring bearer can barreling down the stairs past me and almost knocked me off the stairs- they were narrow and just for one person at a time.
Upon going to the car to leave for the honeymoon we find one window of our car totally broken and so could not use the car and borrowed my one brother’s car.
The groom’s Mom was upset over something and got drunk and refused to come to the reception.

  14. Hi Susan,

I’m so glad that everything went smoothly and turned out beautifully!!

My daughtermarried on July 30th this year. EVERYTHING was PERFECT!! I just have two things to report both with my husband’s involvement. Prior to the start of the ceremony, we couldn’t find my husband so the organ players were playing their backup, emergency filler pieces until we found him …in the bathroom!! He said that he was the last one in line so he was just taking his time getting out there!

Then at the reception the wedding couple decided that when everyone clinked their silverware on their glasses not only should the bridal couple kiss but another couple would be selected to kiss too. Well, when it got to be our turn my husband had just sat down after giving a welcoming speach so he was a bit stressed, nervous and relieved to have it behind him. Anyway, my new son-in law announces that we will be married 30 years on the 16th of July and my husband didn’t catch the intro so everyone , at our table is saying John kiss her and HE AIR KISSED ME!!! I’ve never been so embarrassed!! He later went up and had us do it over but it wasn’t quite the same. Oh well, at least no one got too drunk!

  15. Congratulations, Laurie! I love your wedding story. And congratulations on 30 years of marriage, that’s wonderful! A true Presents romance.

Oh dear, Robyn… sounds like you got a second chance to get it right! Phew

Ellie, we all need a little fantasy and romance in our lives, don’t we?

And catslady, I have one thing to say to you- Men! What can we do with them?! Your story is great!

    Back soon with our winner.

  16. I had two mishaps happen during my marriage ceremony. The first thing is that the ring boy forgot to carry the pillow while walking down the aisle. Instead he let it dangle. Everybody thought it was cute so it was not a bad mishap. The second one was when it was time to put the ring on my hubby’s hand. He had to stop me and tell I was doing it wrong. I was so nervous I had not realized. It’s funny now but it wasn’t then Hubby still teases me about it. I am just glad they were not major things.

by Cherie J on August 4th, 2007 at 11:45 am

  17. But these little things seen huge at the time, don’t they, Cherie? Afterwards we can laugh- but just as long as your rings were attached to the cushion…

  21. Congratulations, Susan. It truly is a happy day to see you child marry. My daughter and wonderful sil got married almost 2 years ago in Sept.

It was a perfect day, the weather was beautiful and the only thing that went wrong was the organist started playing ‘Here comes the Bride” when the wedding party was walking down the aisle. They were supposed to ;lay Pachelbell’s Canon 9 and then HCTB when Karen, my daughter of course walked down with my husband. The bride and groom looked beautiful and handsome. I had a RED dress. Looked pretty good myself if I say so. LOL.

The church was packed and the reception was wonderful. We did have the usual stress before as everyone does - ours with a particular family member but did not let it ruin our day.

My husband balled his eyes out during the traditional Daddy’s Little Girl dance. He also read a passage in the church - the Love is Patient, Love is Kind one and we all waited with baited breath to see if he was going to use the wrong word as he did in rehearsal. LOL. My sister also read a passage and we all got choked up.

Anyway, thanks for sharing and yes, please post more photos.

My best to the happy family.
