Stupid Pet Tricks

Ann Christopher

Meet Sadie, the 3 year-old green-eyed cat we rescued from the shelter earlier this year.

She’s a real character.

She’s extremely vocal and enjoys hiding inside grocery bags. Also lap sitting, desk sitting, and keyboard sitting.

Her all-time favorite activity is rubber band chasing. I don’t need to explain how this works, I’m sure, but I will anyway:

1. I shoot a rubber band across the room (Sadie prefers the big ones I use to keep book manuscripts together);

2. Sadie chases it and brings it back;

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2. Forever.

I have tried explaining to Sadie that this whole rubber band thing is a stupid dog trick, well beneath her dignity, but she doesn’t listen. Yesterday she worked a big blue rubber band off a manuscript when I wasn’t there, knocking papers all over the floor in the process.

We keep her around because she’s cute.

What about you? What stupid trick does your pet do? Today’s commenter with the stupidest trick will win a surprise autographed book from the ones I brought back from the conference in Dallas.

  1. Sam, an 8 pound cutie we found running down a highway several years ago had a routine (not a trick), but it sure gave me a lot of big smiles. After he would come home from the groomers Sam immediately went to our bedroom where we had closet doors with mirrors on. He would walk up and down the mirrors looking at himself and then wait for me to tell him how handsome he was. Then he was a happy boy. If I would laugh while he admired himself, he would hide under the bed and stay their until I could talk him out with treats. Talk about little dogs with big egos…but we loved him just the way he was.

  2. Where to begin? Mu-Mu goes crazy over her little stuffed ferret, which she will bounce and carry around in her mouth like a kill (she even makes the hunting noise). Then there’s her fondness for exposing her flexible spine with her feet point one direction and her front paws and head pointing the opposite (as demonstrated here).

    But then there’s Jaffar, who’s amazed us for 14 years. His was a difficult birth and there was sadly some brain damage, so he’s always remained the emotional equivalent of a kitten. One time he was lying on the bed cleaning his stomach and apparently become somewhat, er, excited. The funny thing was, he looked at the protrusion as if he’d never seen it before — then reached out to tuff it with his claws extended.

    The husband dived across the bed to stop him before he could hurt himself, Jaffar looked up distracted and everything collapsed back to safety. I’m afraid I was laughing hysterically.

    Love them both.

  3. Back in the 50’s my cat Mittens would help my mom with the wash. She would sit on the edge of the wash tub and reach over to bat at the soap bubbles. We had a round agitator model that would scoot around on the floor….luckily she only fell in and missed the wringer!

  4. My cats really don’t perform any tricks. Penny the mamma cat, acts as if we are all beneath her so we treat her as like the queen she is and then Socks, one of her five kittens and the only one that we kept, things the best thing in the world to do is attack our feet when we walk past her.

  5. Sam, our just under 10 lbs. 11 yr. old male Apricot toy poodle is our furbaby who does many tricks. He ‘goes for a walk in the park’ on his hind legs, he ‘plays dead’ when we say bang, he ’shakes a paw’, he ‘dances’(goes in circles).
    The cutest is when he growls at the plastic dog: it is a treat container for dog treats and it is a dog; the head lifts up(on hinges) and the barking starts until you close the lid(head). When Sam is getting his treats my dh puts a piece into the treat container with the puppy barking and Sam gets jealous and barks at the dog and pushes his nose against it-he doesn’t want the other puppy getting his treats. Sometimes dh puts his treat in the treat jar and you should see Sam wanting to get that treat but hesitant because the other dog is barking, lol.

  6. Well, the strangest thing my cat does is pretend she totally, 100% loves me when it is time for her food or treats. Much like right now. . . she’s purring, meowing, walking all over me, near me and will continue to do so until 12 when I get up to the closet to get her dry food and treats. Then she’ll totally forget me once again, and today we have the added - that she’ll remember she’s miserable because of the humidity until later tonight. :)

  7. We have a bunch of cats and kittens. One of the cats will let us know when he wants milk. He will meow and it sounds like he is saying milk.lol. The other cats we have usually play hide n seek from each other. We have two kittens that come in the house and do that. Each one will be on one side of the door and try to swat their paws at the other one. They also love getting in boxes and playing.

  8. My cat - Lucky - loves to run off with my bottle caps. When I’m drinking a soda, as soon as I place the cap down, she pounces for it, picks it up, and takes it off to play with somewhere else. She loves knocking them down the stairs then running down and picking them back up and doing the same thing over and over. I swear sometimes my cat acts like a dog! It is so cute to watch her though.

  9. When we were growing up our dog would beg and then smile but smiling would bother his nose so then he would sneeze all over you.

  11. Our new kitten loves any scraps of rolled up paper and like Sadie, I throw and she retrieves. Her favorite is when I throw it to the other side of the bed (this instead of reading or sleeping lol) and she jumps off with it, goes completely to the other side and jumps back up, and crawls under her cat bed (not in like a normal cat) which is next to me and waits for me to throw it again. She loves “hiding” under that bed and sometimes walks around with it on top of her which gets all the other cats crazy lol.

    My 16 year old cat though does the weirdest thing. If you breathe in and out really fast and loud ( I have no idea how we discovered this) - she starts turning somersaults and if you do it too long she comes after you and attacks!

  12. Our dog Rusty has to chase the neighbor’s chickens out of our yard when we come home. He’ll leave them alone as long as we are not home but the minute we pull in they are trespassing and he runs them off.

  13. We got our first cat when a co-worker of my mom’s had to move and couldn’t take her cat with her. We lived on a farm (not the amimal kind) and my dad thought we’d leave it outside to catch mice. I have no idea where they got the idea that an indoor cat who’d never been allowed outdoors was all of sudden going to fend for itself. Anyway the cat named Mimi ended up living indoors with us with outside priviledges.

    We had no cat doors so the cat figured out its own system for getting the door to open. Mimi would shove her paw through the mail slot on the front door and rattle the plate to get our attention. It worked better than ringing the doorbell, because we always knew who was at the door!

    PS Mimi turned into a great mouser, much to my disgust and horror.

  14. My siamese cat’s favorite toy was socks. Whenever you would take your sock off, she would run and take it away. If there was a pair of rolled up white socks, she would get a hold of it and then rapidly shake her head back and forth to unravel them. Then she would lay down on top of the socks so you couldn’t get them back.
