On Being Different

Vivi Anna

I love it when people are different. When they dare to go against the grain and cause a stir. I suppose that’s not a shocker coming from me, since I had big blue mohawk in school. But I especially love it when authors in a particular genre do that.

Since I first heard about it across the airwaves, I’ve been anxiously waiting for the SHOMI line from Dorchester. I knew the books would be my thing the second I heard the announcement that they were launching a new line that would be heroine focused and lots of action adventure, set in futuristic or alternative worlds. You had me at heroine…

And I haven’t been disappointed.

Because I”m such a sweetheart and Eve didn’t want to hear me whine anymore, she was gracious and sent me an ARC of her book DRIVEN, which is out in September. From the second I got the book I knew it was going to blow my socks off. And it did.

In fact, it is by far one of the best books I’ve read this year.

I loved it so much, I was jealous as hell that I didn’t write it. I wrote to Eve and told her as much. And I just heard today that she received a starred review from Publishers Weekly! BRAVO EVE!!

ROAD WARRIOR
Raina Bowen knows she can handle herself just fine against anything the harsh Northern Waste throws at her. Until it throws her an enigmatic stranger called Wizard. First, she has to haul him out of a brawl he can’t hope to win. And next, her libido is shooting into overdrive at the feel of his hard body pressed against hers on the back of her snowscooter. But there’s something not quite right about this guy. Before she can strip bare Wizard’s secrets, they’re lured into a race for their lives, battling rival truckers, ice pirates…and a merciless maniac with a very personal vendetta.

Pre-order it here.

Now, I thought maybe her book was an anomaly. But I was wrong. I recently picked up WIRED by Liz Maverick, out in stores now, and let me tell you, it rocks too. I’m only a few chapters in, but I know already it’s going on my keeper shelf. And now I can’t wait until MOONGAZER, Marianne Mancusi’s book.

For me the SHOMI line is turning into a tailor made reading orgasm. And I’m hoping to have 12 months of them!!!

  1. What rock have I been under that I didn’t hear about these???
*sigh* Good thing pay-day is Friday. With a recommendation like that, I am going to have to read these.

  2. Yeah, different is good. It’s exciting to try something new and see where the different genres are heading - branching out, expanding, changing. It gives me more to look forward to. I wish Eve tons of success - she deserves it.

However the one thing I really don’t care for are the bookcovers. “Driven” is actually not bad at all, definitely one of the better ones. I just don’t care for the ones that look like they belong on a kid’s magazine. My first instinct is to walk away from them.

  4. You see for me, I love the book covers. But I adored my Hell Kat one with the comic style. They are gearing the books toward a younger market… 20 something woman who reads manga, or her friends do. I’m thrilled Dorchester is doing something for that market, because working at a bookstore, I know that not many young women read romance. They grew up reading comics, playing nintendo, not playing wedding dressup and thinking about their perfect match. They dont’ want to read the books their moms are reading. They come from reading YA to books that feature 30 something heroines. There’s a big market inbetween that needs to be filled.

  5. I am really curious about these books and I plan to check them out when I am in the US in two weeks.

Vivi, I started reading romance again in my early twenties and the addiction is still there with 30. LOL.
