When I first started my Special Investigations Agency series at Ellora’s Cave a few years back, I had no idea that one of the characters, Dorcas Shannigan, would crawl into more than one of my stories and then demand her own. Dorky is a unique character, a woman who no one in the super secret agency every sees. She’s cloistered down in the basement of the SIA, a librarian who has forgotten more about the paranormal than any of the agents at SIA could ever learn. She’s an invaluable source of information to the other agents and the adminstration of SIA.
Finally it dawned on me that Dorky’s sultry, sexy voice shouldn’t go to waste. After all, she’s a woman who deserves the right hero for her. I created Grey O’Toole, a man haunted by his past, an agent who is always on the go and never seems to slow down to smell the roses. He’s been in love with Dorky’s voice for an eon it seems. Ten years in fact. When danger makes it imperative that they meet, the mental connection they’ve established with each other will create more than a firestorm of emotion, but a furious race to save their lives and maybe the furture of a mysterious race.
My question for you is, what is it that you like about a series and when does it start to go stale for you? When will you stop reading a series? I’ll select a random winner from responses, and the winner will receive a download of another book in the SIA series
Clandestine was released on June 27 at Ellora’s Cave www.ellorascave.com. You can read excerpts and more at my website www.deniseagnew.com and at Ellora’s Cave. Enjoy!

Hi Patty! I’m happy I could influence you to try out the series. One thing to remember is that even though it is a series, you don’t have to read the books in any particular order. If you go to my website you can see the order in which they came out. The first book is actually an anthology that I put together with Rosemary Laurey and Tracy Cooper Posey. I went on with the series after that. So you could start with that one or with any of the other books that might strike your fantasy. Feel free to ask any questions you might have about the series.
Okay, I’m off to run some errands. Be back a little bit later.

I enjoy reading series that have the secondary characters appear in later written books.

I finds that a series keeps the reader coming back for more especially if the story and characters are written well.

I love series too. I get attached to the characters and love having them continue to show up - it’s like catching up with old friends. But all it takes is one poorly written book and I’ll abandon the series for fear the next book will be just as bad. I won’t buy the last Harry Potter book because the sixth was so badly written (or perhaps the editor just wasn’t allowed to edit).

I love series books because you get to revisit with old characters. It would take alot for me to let go of a series. One poorly written one won’t do it for me. It would have to be like three bombs in row before I would finally give up.

 Lisa,
I find that the secondary characters, when I’m writing them, usually suck me right into writing their story!

Julia,
Do you ever find you get tired of a series, though? Can there be too many books in a series?

Deborah,
Thanks for your feedback. I’ll admit that I have gotten tired of reading a series before, but that may be because an author can have difficulty keeping the story lines fresh.

Thanks so much. I’m hoping that many readers who haven’t tried the SIA stories are tempted to give it a whirl!

Shuck Yin,
That’s the whole thing isn’t it. Keeping the story lines fresh and interesting and complex enough the reader will scream loudly for MORE!!!

I love series. If they have the same characters think after a point that they have to end. Especially if they are the same characters over and over again. But if its different characters then to me it can stay fresher longer and as long as its not the same book over and over then it can go indefinitely

;-) Hi guys…sorry it took me so long to get back. Had a thunderstorm. Actually it was a dry thunderstorm. Noise but no rain. Then I had to run around and do some errands and here I finally am!

Linda B.,
I never actually read the Harry Potter books. :) Not because I had anything against them. It’s more a so many books so little time thing. :) ;-) I did love the movies, though. Looking forward to this next one.

Cherie,
Isn’t it interesting how we all have thresholds of what will hold us when it comes to a series and what won’t? :)

Pam,
You’re right…if you can have quite a variety of different characters without getting too bogged down in what is happening witih the previous characters in the other books, that can really kept the series fresh.
