The Lazy Days of Summer

Ann Christopher

The lazy days of summer are here, and I don’t feel like doing much of anything because it’s just too hot. Here’s a list of things I didn’t do yesterday:

  1. vacuum (what’s the point when you have young children and pets? I mean, REALLY);
  2. dust (a protective layer is good for furniture, don’t you think?); and
  3. cook dinner (that’s the beauty of leftovers).

Here’s a list of things I won’t be doing today:

  1. pull weeds;
  2. grocery shop for the Fourth of July dinner, which I foolishly volunteered to cook;
  3. water the lawn and flowers.

One thing I DO have the energy to do: read. I’m deep into romantic suspense right now, and here are some of my favorite authors:

  1. Karen Robards (love the humor);
  2. Sandra Brown (love those intense heroes);
  3. Linda Howard (love the strong heroines); and
  4. Cherry Adair (although I think technically she does romantic thrillers).

What about you? Are you feeling lazy too? If so, please send in one thing you won’t be doing today. Or, in the alternative, please send in a recommendation for a great romantic suspense to read by the pool. I’m giving away a Borders gift certificate at the end of the day to a lucky commenter. Be warned, though—if you write in about how you’re cleaning the entire house from top to bottom today you will be AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFIED!

  1. Dont worry - I have off today - took off Mon too - and did some book shopping - so I had a long weekend. Had a nice day with a friend yest - made a day out of it - had lunch - walked around town out east.

I definitely will not be cleaning today. It is funny you said that about being disqualified - LOL. I never clean the house from top to bottom - hate cleaning and have someone come in once a mo and I clean in between as needed.

I have been lolling around on the computer and doing little nothings wasting my time instead of READING.

As for a good rom supense read: Metsy Hingle - Behind the Mask - awesome.

  2. It’s a lazy day for me here too since I’ve been working hard all week. But I think I deserve it. We all deserve days off now and then..even if its just from doing small mundane things that have to get done around the house.
As for a book recommendation, I would say give Holly Lisle’s “Night Echoes” a chance. I really enjoyed it.

  3. Two things I will not be doing today is laundry and cleaning toilets. Yuck! I absolutely hate cleaning. It’s too hot in Texas to do anything other than laze around and read. I’ve recently been into romantic suspense as well and find myself buying all the romantic suspense I can find. I even joined the Mira romantic supsense book club so they send me three each month. Have you read Lisa Jackson’s Shiver? I really enjoyed that one. I bought the sequel but haven’t read that one yet.

  4. Well, I will be watching the kids jump on their new trampoline. I will be reading.

I won’t be cleaning the ceiling fans, even though the dust is starting to look like ivy hanging off of them. I mean, they are on the ceiling. Just don’t look up, right?

    Hugs, Zara

by Zara on July 3rd, 2007 at 8:56 am

  5. I’m Watching You, You Can’t Hide, Nothing to Fear and Count To Ten by Karen Rose are all great romantic/suspense/thriller books.

I won’t be vacuuming or grooming my cats today, luckily their fur blends with the rugs.

by Susan on July 3rd, 2007 at 9:12 am

  6. Pat L. and April, thanks for the recommendations!

Zara, we have a kitchen ceiling fan. You’re supposed to clean them? Who knew? ;-)

Susan, cat hair’ll getcha every time, won’t it? We have two cats who, luckily, are shorthairs. I had a long haired one for years … Ai, yi, yi…

Janet, I just read my first Lisa Jackson, DEEP FREEZE, last week! Loved it! She’s really good at world-building, and creating atmosphere, don’t you think?

  7. I will not be doing any cleaning today. I’m going to read all day. I just got a new book in the mail that I have been dying to read. It’s Forbidden Pleasure by Lora Leigh. Romantic suspense is one of my favorite genres. Some of my fave authors are Lisa Jackson, Beverly Barton, Heather Graham, Linda Howard, Denise A. Agnew, Kay Hooper, Mariah Stewart, Karen Robards, and Karen Rose. The Dare by Denise A. Agnew was great. Hot Pursuit by Karen Rose, Annie Solomon, and Carla Cassidy and Brown-Eyed Girl by Mariah Stewart are good too.

  8. As far as house cleaning goes, I do what I see needs done. But if I don’t see it, it doesn’t get done.

And for romantic suspense books it’s Karen Robards, I have almost all her books. Lisa Jackson has some really good romantic suspense too.

by Tammy G. on July 3rd, 2007 at 9:48 am

  9. I will not be cleaning the bathrooms today. Too hot and they can wait another day or two. I read Lisa Gardner for romantic suspense, Her book Alone, as well as Allison Brennan.,See No Evil is fab.

  10. I opened all the windows this morning to let the dust blow out. I haven’t dusted in months — can’t even remember the last time.

by Gail Barrett on July 3rd, 2007 at 11:25 am

  11. Cleaning is a chore that is best left. I will not tackle any garage cleaning nor vacuuming at all this week. The heat is intense so forget it. the books which I always enjoy are Wendy Corsi Staub, Her new one Scream and Anne Stuart’s Ice Blue. These keep me riveted.

by ellie on July 3rd, 2007 at 11:45 am

  12. I had thought about cleaning but not a good idea. Too opressively hot so instead I will read all day long. Any novel by Sandra Brown is for me and I enjoy all of P.J. Parrish’s books. The new one, A thousand Bones I will start today.

by pearl on July 3rd, 2007 at 11:51 am

  13. Well, since my day consists of being on the computer and reading, everything else is not what I’m doing. Although one of these days I should vacuum in here. . . don’t think I did that since last summer. . . ;)

by Lois on July 3rd, 2007 at 11:57 am

  14. I will definitely not be vacuuming today; way too hot. It’s too hard on my back.

by RobynL on July 3rd, 2007 at 12:26 pm

  15. During the summer too much effort is required to clean and I don’t consider it a priority as I do reading. An excellent novel by Laura Lippman is on my table. All of Beverly Barton’s books keep my mind off distractions.

by sharon on July 3rd, 2007 at 12:46 pm

  16. Doing housework and yardwork…in this warm weather…NOT A CHANCE! This is summer and hot and humid days are for relaxation and enjoyment. I get that by getting comfy on the porch, having a nice cool drink in one hand and a great book in the other…what more could an avid reader ask for…maybe more books and someone to refill my drink when needed. That is about it. Am presently reading Raintree: Sanctuary by Beverly Barton as I have always enjoyed her novels.

by Shari C on July 3rd, 2007 at 1:33 pm

  17. Oh my, so many sisters of my heart when it comes to cleaning! So, yeah, I won’t be vacuuming or dusting today. Neither do I plan on doing laundry or bathing the dogs.

I enjoyinged Just About Sex, BTW. ;-) Sorry no book suggestions, suspense isn’t my cup of tea.

by Linda B on July 3rd, 2007 at 1:37 pm

  18. My suggestion is Karen Tabke or Allison Brennan. Both are great suspense writers.

by Crystal B. on July 3rd, 2007 at 2:09 pm

  19. Today is my only day off this week (yes, I have to work even on July 4th), so I’m definitely being lazy today. I *should* be cleaning, but I’m playing on the Internet, watching TV, and I’ll be doing lots of reading! I’m raising a glass to all the other ladies who are joining us in our relaxation! :-)

by Karen W. on July 3rd, 2007 at 2:20 pm

  20. OOPS, I established I won’t be cleaning, but forgot the romantic suspense recommendation. NIGHT ECHOES by Holly Lisle, THE DOLLMAKER by Amanda Stevens, and THE GOOD HUSBAND by Dean Koontz. (Not technically romantic suspense by Koontz, but there’s always an element of romance in his books, and he’s a darn good storyteller!)

by Karen W. on July 3rd, 2007 at 2:24 pm

  21. I definitely won’t be doing house work today.

by Lisa W on July 3rd, 2007 at 2:30 pm

  22. I am reading Kiss of Crismon by Lara Adrian today.

by Patricia on July 3rd, 2007 at 2:31 pm

  23. No laundry for me!!!

by JULIA on July 3rd, 2007 at 2:31 pm

  24. Absolutely no gardening for me, hot! hot!

by Shuck Ying on July 3rd, 2007 at 2:32 pm

  25. What I would like to be doing today is lounging by the pool (that’s if I had one, lol)

by Deborah on July 3rd, 2007 at 2:32 pm

  26. I won’t be doing any vaccuming, laundry or ironing. Thank goodness!

by Randy on July 3rd, 2007 at 2:33 pm

  27. Saturday was my son’s 4th birthday and we threw him a party. We had family come from out of town. I am not cleaning because I am still trying to recover. Added to that , my 8 month old baby girl is teething so she wants me to hold her and cries every time I set her down. I am typing this one-handed while I hold her. Even if I wanted to I could not get any cleaning done.

by Cherie J on July 3rd, 2007 at 2:42 pm

  28. I won’t be doing any laundry today but I will be reading Dean Koontz’s The Good Guy.

by Teresa W. on July 3rd, 2007 at 2:58 pm

  29. I won’t be folding clothes today they can wait for anther day lol. or the teen boy can fold them. He needs the practice

by Pamk on July 3rd, 2007 at 3:14 pm

  30. I won’t be returning my overdue books to the library. After all, the fines are just another form of funding for a fine institution!

by Jude on July 3rd, 2007 at 5:38 pm

  31. Here’s what I won’t be doing:

    Vacuuming
    Cleaning the bathrooms
    Going grocery shopping
    Making Dinner

Here’s what I should be doing:

    See the list above

Here’s what I will be doing:

    Going to the mall
    Surfing the web
    Watching a baseball game

  32. Wow! What a delightful group of slackers we are! I’m soooo glad I’m not the only one shirking her responsibilities today!

Thanks so much for the wonderful book recommendations–I can always count on this group to come through with great information and discussions! My TBR is going to grow by leaps and bounds … I feel a trip to Borders coming on …

I was going to randomly choose a winner, but after reading the comment from Cherie J., who has the teething 8 mo. old baby glued to her hip, I’ve decided she DESERVES the gift certificate. So congrats, Cherie! Please e-mail your addy to me at ann@annchristopher.com.

Have a great 4th of July, everyone! See you next time!

    Ann

  33. I won’t be doing my performance appraisal for work. I’m starting my holiday tonight and I’m going to wait and agonize over it on Thursday. No chores for me. Just read and relax like you are. I think it’s a great idea! We all deserve a break sometimes.

If your a fan of Sandra Brown, you probably already read Slow Heat in Heaven. One of my favorites. Another is Naked in Death by J.D. Robb and Someone to Watch Over Me by Judith McNaught.

  35. Wow! Thank you so much! You just made may my day. This week has been rough. This has definitely made it brighter. I just sent you an email with my address. Have a happy 4th to everyone!

by Cherie J on July 4th, 2007 at 9:56 am

  36. Congrats, Cherie J - and glad to see we all don’t like to clean. There are a few people out there who actually love it. NOT ME!
