Lame Author Signings

Elizabeth Hoyt

Against my better judgement, my critique partner, Jade Lee, talked me into doing a book signing. The booksigning was at a local major chain bookstore and it was scheduled from 1:30 to 3:30 on a Saturday afternoon. Herewith is an actual, real time, chronological outline of events:

1:20 I arrive at the bookstore, cheerfully introduce myself to the events co-ordinator, and dump a huge box of bookmarks at the table. I’ve brought them to sign as I sit there for the next two hours because frankly, I’ll be really happy if one person shows up.

1:33 Jade blows into the store, late as usual, but looking really good in her silk jacket with the crane embroidered on the back.

1:35 Impatient that she hasn’t made a sale yet, Jade calls her MOTHER to come and see us. I spend the next five minutes mocking her.

1:43 First person to ask us where the restrooms are.

1:46 (Still no sale, natch) Unable to stand the suspense anymore, Jade goes to buy a $30 box of chocolate to lure people to our table with. Somehow while off looking at the chocolate, she guilts the café people into baking fresh cookies for our table. SCORE!

1:53 Jade’s mother calls to say she is lost.

2:05 Fresh cookies are delivered to our table and are immediately eaten by three middle-aged men and an assortment of children who appear to be wandering the store alone (the children, not the men.) Jade nudges me when I smile at an urchin and whisper to her to go tell her mommy to buy my book.

2:14 Jade’s mother arrives and very kindly buys our books. It’s our first sale.

2:23 A store employee sidles up to us and tells me that she’s read all my books! I smile. She then explains that she reads the arcs—and then passes them on to her friends. She never actually buys books, despite having a store discount. It’s an effort, but I keep smiling.

3:01: Jade suggests we fashion nametags that say JK Rowlings in the theory that very few people actually know what JK Rowlings looks like.

3:07: A woman stops at the table, glances at my books, and looking unimpressed, asks if this is all I’ve written. I’m still smiling!

3:30: Oh, thank god, it’s over. Total books sold: 3 The Leopard Prince and 4 The Raven Prince. Total bookmarks signed: 493. Total cookies eaten: 2 ½.

Cheers!
Elizabeth

  1. My bookseller friend says that it doesn’t matter if you have even one person come to your booksigning because the bookstore will have promoted the signing in its store for several days before and free publicity like that, inside a bookstore, is worth sitting there forlornly for 3 hours.

  2. LOL! I sure hope so, Jane. Actually, I think a lot of people are too shy to come over while the author is actually sitting there (even though Jade and I are very nice and hardly ever bite.) Two of the books we sold were as we were packing up–I think we looked less threatening. ;-)

  3. In store promotion and sucking up to the bookseller are the two reasons that I do signings. And also why I talked Elizabeth into it. I just want to say that I was NOT late. I was EXACTLY on time. Precision is an important aspect of a modern life. (Of course, my last signing I forgot the time change and showed up EXACTLY an hour late, but I digress…) Anyway, it was great fun to sit and pretend to be JK Rowling together…although we did disagree on who got to be JK and who got to be Rowling…

  4. Elizabeth,
I’m very surprised that you didn’t have a huge turnout for your signing. I belong to a book club at Katy Budget Books in Texas and our group picked “The Raven Prince” to read at the end of June. We already had our discussion and everyone just loved the book and was very surprised that it was your first book. We’ve already agreed to read “The Leopard Prince” for our pick another month. I think it will be for August or September. Not sure on that. I already bought my copy. I thought the Raven Prince was absolutely wonderful. I had mine read within a few days and normally I can’t read until my three year old is in bed but I could not put your book down. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical romances.

  5. I can sympathize with this. I refuse to do another bookstore signing again unless it’s with Nora Roberts. Seriously, I did one group signing with her a year ago and it was great fun because I got to talk to the people who were forced to snake past my table on their way to get to hers. Otherwise it is just too unpredictable. I don’t think that most bookstores promote the signings enough to bring people in.

  6. Oh heck, I would have loved to have gone. . . but you guys are so very rarely ever in my neck of the woods! LOL (or like this one time I found out after the fact. . . pooh. . . ) But yep, I would have been nervous myself approaching you guys. LOL :) But the one signing I did go to I was nervous at first, but I got over that. . . way quickly. . . :)

  7. I can vouch for the book signings at Katy Budget Books. Wasn’t it was a featured stop when the Romantic Times convention came to Houston? When KBB has an author signing, the turnout is usually decent. Not bad for an indy. (Disclaimer: KBB is my local UBS)

  8. Well that kinda sucked. I’m going to a book signing this weekend. There will only be 3 0r 4 of us. But we are very excited. I’ve only been to 2 before.

  9. Glad you liked THE RAVEN PRINCE, Janet. I’ve heard of Katy Books even up here in Illinois, and it sounds like a fabulous store for both authors and readers!

I much prefer group signings, too, Gail–and having one with La Nora would be fantastic!

Never be nervous approaching authors, Lois–most of us are just so glad when somebody makes eye contact! ;-)

And good luck on your signing, Stacy S! These things are kind of hit or miss so yours maybe great!

  10. Oh no I not an author just a reader. I’m going to an author signing of Lori Foster & others.

  11. Hi Elizabeth,

I have been to a book signing close to me and I had a fantastic time! It was held at the Barnes & Noble in Valparaiso, Indiana. The author, Kate Collins, who writes the Flower Shop mysteries is so nice! I actually hunted down some old books of hers before hand and took them with me for her to sign. I bought her new book also and she autographed it. She signed all my books differently which I thought was so sweet of her! I brought 4 of her older books with me.

Just to let all the readers out there know that the authors are really nice! Kate answered my questions and was thrilled that I found her older books. She even made a comment to a guy in line that he looked similar to one of the guys on her book cover. We all laughed! He made some funny comment.

There is no reason to be nervous. Just please be patient when standing in line and you will eventually get your turn to talk to the author. Cutting ahead in line is frowned upon and unruly people will be ushered to the door by security if there is one in the store. I had a lady cut ahead of me in line and the people behind me yelled at her! She was needless to say embarassed and went off in another direction in the store.

  12. Sorry to hear about the lame signing - but at least you weren’t alone. That has to help a lot.

I worked for a bookstore that wasn’t very pro-romance, which to me is such a huge mistake. Cincy, OH has quite a lovely writing community (Lori Foster, Dianne Castell, Erin McCarthy, Toni Blake/Lacey Alexander, LuAnn McLane and a bunch more in the surrounding areas) so that’s where I go ever year, though I’m in Chicago.

One store about an 1 & 1/2 hrs from me has hosted SEP, Suz Brockmann and Diana Gabaldon. They are an independent store, and very pro-romance. Worth getting stuck in rush hour traffic, that’s for sure.

  13. Hey, Stacy S.–if you’re not the author, the signing will be sure to be a success–after all, YOU the reader are coming!

Great post, Michele! You’re right: the authors are just glad you all came, so don’t be nervous or shy. And bringing your old books is a wonderful idea and perfectly Kosher. I wrote about selling books in the above post mainly for comic purposes. While it’s great to sell a book or two, I mainly go to a book signing so that readers can come chat and meet me if they’d like.

Sounds like you have a goldmine of author talent in your area, Stacy! As a reader I envy you! ;-)
