I’m Leaving on a Jetplane…

Tessa Radley

Not long now and I’ll be flying…

My mother loved to travel. I as a child, I remember the adventure of taking her to the airport so that she could fly off to exotic places like Japan, Egypt,
Ireland, Thailand and Istambul. I remember the smell of jet fuel carried on the hot summer night air…the drone of the engines…the adrenaline that pumped through me.

Flying was always associated with excitement, discovery…fun. Until the morning after my wedding when my hubby and I set off on honeymoon…and the Sunday headlines announced that a jet had crashed into the sea killing all 159 on board. Horribly sad! And, trust me, the rattling Fokker aircraft we on was not a good place to be reading that!

Time passed. The joy and excitement of flying returned a little. Then came 9/11 which dulled the joy again.

But soon I’ll be boarding a plane to attend the RWA Conference in
Dallas. You can bet your bottom dollar I’m starting to get excited…although there’s always a little apprehension too. But at the end of the journey north, I’ll meet writers…readers…see old friends and make some new ones. What could be more fun?

Any one going to conference? Or flying somewhere exotic and exciting? Ever had any fear-of-flying experiences you’d like to share? One person in the posts (randomly drawn) gets a copy of RICH MAN’S REVENGE my June release from Silhouette Desire. Read an excerpt.

  1. I don’t fly. I am very scared to fly although I may try doing it one day. I’m not going anywhere exciting for now. Wish I were. I would love to travel. But I am graduating July 29th. YEAH!!!!!!

  3. I am not too thrilled with flying - but I take a dramamine and am on my way.

No plans to go anywhere - went ot Vegas in April and Fla in May. May go again to Vegas in the fall - with friends for their 40th anniv.

  4. I worked for an airline, yet still flying makes me nervous. The last time I flew was in December, flying back from Vegas.

I won’t be attending this year, but hopefully next year. I was there last year in Atlanta and had a blast.

  5. I fly down to Florida every other month to see my parents. I can’t say I love flying but it’s better than driving 9 hours. LOL Since losing luggage has been my fate more often than I like, I’ve learned to pack light and carry it on. Probably the worst news I had while flying was on a flight out of Chicago in an ice storm. We were the last plane to leave the airport. I just figured if it was my time to go, well it was my time to go. Nothing I could do about it. Obviously, it wasn’t. *grin*

  6. Haven’t really tried flying till now, but I’d rather stick to the ground..
I think sometime during this month I might be going to someplace that’s got sand and beach by car of course

  7. I think flying is exciting. Well getting to go somewhere far away or new is always thrilling. My worst flight though was ages ago when I was coming back from Hawaii (I live in PA) where I had met my husband for R&R and he had to go back to viet nam and he had the first flight out that day and I had the last flight out (since I didn’t know when he had to leave I wasn’t taking any chances) and I had stayed on the beach feeling sorry for myself and caught the worst sunburn of my life and if that wasn’t bad enough, we hit really horrible weather. But heck only one bad experience out of dozens isn’t too bad :)

  8. My problem with flying is cancelled flights!!!! Lately it’s the norm!! We’ve been stuck in airports the whole day long just trying to get to talk to the customer service people and then no guarantee of a flight out that day!
Our flight was full because we booked at the last minute due to the death and the weather was OK slightly drizzling.
Worst experience was in April when my family got stuck in Ohare and we had a wake that evening and a funeral the next day for my mother-in- law. We definitely did NOT NEED THIS STRESS on top of everything else!
A week ago my son got stuck in Atlanta and yesterday another son also got stuck there. What’s going on? CANCELLED flights seems to be the norm.

  9. I like flying, but not the waiting of the next flight at the airports, which can go on for ours and since I can’t sleep in an airplane, anyway… Last time I went to the States my head was buzzing in a very unpleasant way by the time I got to my destinanation simply because I had been awake well over 30 hours.

  10. I have only been on a plane twice (to and from) and had to try to keep my mind off the fact that I am miles off the ground!!!! A lot of prayers were said during those times..LOL :) :)

  11. I have never been on a plane. I think I would be scared to fly somewhere.

  12. Flying does not bother me. I am not flying anywhere exotic for a long while because I just had a baby girl 8 months ago. Flying with 2 small children under the age of 4 is no fun and they are too young to be left with someone for that many days. Maybe in a few years.

  13. I do as little traveling as possible. I have always been a homebody and don’t see that changing. Books provide all of the escape I need!

Have a great time at the RWA Conference!

  14. I’m not thrilled with flying, but the idea of going somewhere fun always makes it worth it.

  15. Hope you have a great time! I’m not flying anywhere in the near future.

  16. It’s been ages since I’ve been on a plane (we’re talking really early 90s here). And now we always joke that it’s probably easier and faster to drive anywhere than fly. . . it might be more expensive in the end, but with all the delays and the security issues and whatever, even driving from here on the east coast to the west would still be faster and less of a hassle than flying. LOLOL :)

  17. I love travel so much. I used to like flying as well but have become increasingly more nervous with each flight. No idea why. The best part of the flight for me is always getting off the plane. I remember landing once in Nairobi and all the passengers clapped when we touched the ground. What did they know that I didn’t? I’ve always wondered

Have an awesome time in Dallas, Tessa.

  18. I am liking flying better the more I do it. There are times when I wonder why I am up in the clouds and the plane is moving more ways than I care to. I don’t fly often so when I do it is a special treat and I get excited and nervous.

  19. I like flying. I don’t like airports lol, but the flying itself, I love. We are going on a couple small family trips this Summer, but they will be car trips. We plan to go to the beach in July, and the Smokey Mountains in August. To all of you who are traveling, be safe and I hope you have a great time!

  20. Before I became a consultant for BeautiControl I used to travel all over the U.S. the worst part was I am scared to fly, 3 years I flew and I always grabbed the person next to me… their thigh or arm a hand and one time their soda that flew all over them and myself. If I can’t drive where ever I need to get to now, then I just don’t go…I would love to go overseas one day but I think someone or everyone on the plane would kill me before I ever stepped foot on foreign soil!
