Super Powers

Myla Jackson

I just saw the new release of Fantastic Four and it gave me the theme for my blog today….Super Powers!!!! What is it about super powers that fascinates people. Is it that you can overcome greater obstacles, save lives or the recognition you get from owning such powers?

There are many kinds of powers that would be really cool to possess, and I’m not just talking about the ability to stretch, be invisible, light up like a torch or turn into a man of rock. There are more subtle powers that would be neat to have. I’ve written several stories where my characters had maybe not super powers, but the power to be something other than just human. The problem with super power is that you can have super corruption. The temptation is there.

In The Ambassador’s Widow part of the Dreams of the Oasis I novella by Ellora’s Cave, my hero had the power to shape-shift into the form of another human. He was an undercover agent called a Chameleon.

In Trouble with Harry and Trouble with Will my heros are reluctant genies with the power to grant wishes. Which brings up the concept of the use of the powers. Harry and Will didn’t always have control over the wishes the heroines asked for. Power without control can be a HELL of a deal. Ask Will.

In Witch’s Curse my heroine is a witch whose powers were stripped after she misused them. How’s living without your powers and completely under the power of the…cough…cough…powers that be? Frustrated?

In Shewolf my heroine has the power to shape-shift into a wolf. Talk about mega hairball! Isn’t it hard enough to figure out life as a human? Hey, stay tuned. I have a new release coming in the City of Wolves series, the sequel to Shewolf. It’s called Thorn’s Kiss.

I didn’t realize how many stories I’d written where my heroes or heroines had some kind of power until I’d looked back at them and tallied.

If I could have any superpower I wanted, sheesh, what would I choose? Would I want to be invisible? How about the strongest person on earth? Would I want the power to fly (now that would be uber cool, if I didn’t suffer motion sickness!) How about mind-reading? (the world is noisy enough without tapping into the chaotic thoughts of millions). Shapeshifting? (Does it come with the auto-diet plan?)

If you had a choice of superpowers, what would it be?

Now to go jot down notes on a new story about a superhero. Maybe you can help me. What power shall my hero/heroine have? Give me some cool ideas that aren’t the norm via a comment in this blog for a chance to win a download of your choice of one of my stories mentioned in this blog.

  1. I would like to erase people’s pain, make them happy specially people who are sick. People who suffer from cancer or any other dying disease.

  2. I totally agree with you on this super power. I know this dates me, but I remember an old Star Trek episode where a female could heal by touch, the downside was that it weakened her. It would truly be a gift to heal with a touch. Great response, Barbara!

  3. Yeah healing would be a cool power to have!

I’d like the ability to manipulate nature to do my bidding. Animals, plants, the earth. You name it I want to control it!!

  4. I will be selfish and have the superpower to eat anythink I like and don’t gain any weight (forever), lol.

  5. I want the super power to influence people and hopefully can remove any negative thoughts.

  6. I want to control time. So I can go back to change the bad things or look into the future to hopefully prevent problems.

  7. As mentioned previously, the power to heal would be fantastic and so helpful to many people. Also I would like the ability to move from place to place by thought…just de-materialize where I am and be where I wish to be when I think of the place in my mind. One big benefit would be I would never be late for anything again and that would be so nice…just ask some of my friends and family. Also I could move from city to city, state to state, or country to country without loss of much time which is needed to travel by conventional means.

  8. The ability to travel through time would be amazing.

  10. thought teleportation would be great and fantsatic if I could take someone with me. Only downside I could see was keeping me off the beach lol.

  11. Hmm… I’d like the power to split myself into two. That way I could get more on my to-do list done

  12. Oh Barbara, that is a cool power - to heal others. I’ve always wanted to fly, even though I’m afraid of heights. I would love to be able to just “zap” things, such as a dying tree to make it come back to life or to kill a poisonous snake about to strike. Cool stuff.

  13. Ali, that’s funny. Being two people could be fun. I’ll have to think about that. I could see that as having drawbacks. Like the split leaves you with half the mental capacity or half the endurance. Hmmmm….it could be fun!

And Stacy the ability to zap something or someone could be interesting. Can you imagine road rage if you could zap someone? Ack!

I do so like the idea of materializing in an out of places. It would be neat to be a fly on the wall in certain places.

    All good ideas! Thanks!

  14. This is quite a challenge. Each time I thought of some superpower (invisibility, starting fire, shape-changing, time travel, ability to heal, flying, imitate animate and inanimate objects, turn people to stone/ice/trees/animals, etc.) I also remembered a story where it had been done (some quite often). Then I thought about the ability to create a vacuum or become the absence of substance so that one could smother a fire (no oxygen to feed the fire) and if used at the wrong time/wrong place put your partner in jeopardy. I can’t recall that being done.

  15. Giving some more thought to super powers I also think it would be neat if you could slow down time around you…you could be moving at normal speed and yet with everything slowed down around you it would appear you are moving faster than anyone could follow. You could get out of the way before being hit by a person or object, you could get away before anyone could stop you or you could move through a crowd with hardly being seen. A talent that might come in handy if you were hiding or searching for something or trying to avoid certain people.

  16. Oh how about the super power to hold back embarassing moments! You know like foot in the mouth moments, fall in front of people moments, (I did that once at the grocery store in front of all the cash registers coming in the front door. Every one gasped and held there breath as I got up. It was a rainy day and I was wearing flip-flops and slipped and fell right on my knees then butt! Man, did that hurt! I got up and walked away holding onto my cart for dear life!)

The super power to stop all embarassing moments before they happen is what I would love to have!

Oh and the super power to stop all devastating accidents before they happen. Like the tragedy that happened to the teenager on the ride at Six Flags at Great America whose feet were snapped off by a cable! That was a horrible! My heart absolutely ached when I heard that and I felt so sorry for her.
