Friendship is like a plant, don’t you think? Feed it and water it, and watch it flourish and grow; ignore it and eventually it will wither and die.
Thankfully, there are those lucky times when the worst doesn’t happen, and friends that meant a lot to us years ago come back into our life.
I began my Birthday Babies club on the Susan Stephens site after chatting with one of my daughters about how much friendship means to me. She drew the image that is now our button and reminds me every time I wear it that I’m never alone wherever I am in the world.
What does friendship mean to you, and how do you fight to keep it alive?
That’s what we’re chatting about today, and I’m really looking forward to hearing from you.
Do share your friendship stories- happy, sad, funny, whatever- there will be a super prize for our winner, chosen at random.
*If you would like to be a Birthday Baby and receive a card and goodies on your special day, just hop along to the *Fun* page on www.susanstephens.net and wherever you are in the world you’ll be hearing from me
:-)
*And don’t worry if you’re not a winner this time on All-A-Blog, because there are contests over at my site www.susanstephens.net, and there’s also another opportunity for you to win a prize over at Author Sound Relations, where the fabulous Lee is featuring another contest for me http://www.authorsoundrelations.com/MTB/contest.htm

I couldn’t resist sharing the August Presents release cover of One-Night Baby with you!

Or these two scrumptious covers either! Sweetest Revenge is an August UK book, and includes a re-release of The Spaniard’s Revenge, featuring the impossible Doctor Xavier and of course, the lovely Sophie who is more than a match for him.
Dirty Weekend is my first Modern Extra for Harlequin, and I just can’t leave delicious Galem Grant out of the picture for a single minute- much as I’d like to keep him all to myself, he’s yours to share!
I can’t wait to hear from you on the subject of friendship. ***That’s our contest subject for today.***
In the meantime, happy reading everyone!
Susan

Like any friendship, you must work at developing your friendship. You must be honest, share your feelings, and trust him/her.
It takes desire, time, and energy. To be there for him/her in their time of need, without question. Even if it is just a talk that is needed or if you may need to travel because you’ve move miles away and they need you. Then you find a way to get there.

Susan the August covers are gorgeous!
One of my favorite quotes about friendship is from Mark Twain ~ Good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.

Hi Tammy, great to see you here. I am just ‘clocking off’ over here in the UK after spending the day with my 3rd Modern Extra hero, Cade Grant, and heroine, Liv’ Tate.
We just got through an assault course together, and boy, was that exhausting!
I agree with your sentiments entirely, and look forward to reading what everyone else has to say.

Friendship to me is about being there for each other when needed. Having fun, just going shopping or whatever. And you can trust that person to tell you the truth about anything.

My best friend and I grew up just a few houses apart. We went from kindergarten all the way through High School graduation and all the ups and downs that go with those years. Then she got married right after that and moved 3000 miles away to the west coast (without me! ). And they keep moving! We stayed in contact by phone, email and reading the same books so we still have that something just between the two of us. But there is nothing like when she makes it back here for a visit.

Being able to pick up where you left off last time around… feeling comfortable in each other’s company, trust, affection, humour shared… and truth- even when that outfit you desire is said to look like an old pinny= Yep, that happened to me last time I was out shopping with a group of friends. And you know what? Once I’d got over the disappointment, they were right! ;-)

Friendships can sustain you through difficulties and lift your spirits when times are tough. Friendships are what keeps us youthful and outgoing as well as adventurous and optimistic.

Friendships can be so special; they are with those that you can share anything with and can always count on no matter what. I have some of these wonderful friendships with great people I went to school with, some I have worked with and also some of my neighbors. Although some have moved many miles away we are in touch by phone, mail or e-mail and have even spent some vacations together. Those that are close by we know we can count on for whatever and in some cases have had to do just that. We have laughed together, cried together, gone on diets together, shopped together, helped with each others children, partied together…you name it. Friendships are the greatest! You can never have enough ‘real’ friends.

For me, a friend is someone you can count on. They are there for you in the bad times as well as the good. There is trust in friendship. You know your friend wants the best for you and will give you their honest opinion even if it is not what you want to hear.

There is nothing on earth to be prized more than true friendship. True friendship is an important part of life and without it we are lost. Friends who contribute to our well being and are sincere and kind are worth their weight in gold.

Forgive me, but this is a long post. The best explanation of friendship I’ve ever heard was a song (although the words were spoken, not sung) performed by Glen Campbell when I was a teenager, more than 25 years ago. I remember every single word to this day and they are so true. So here they are.
Friends are never earned, they are a gift from the loving God
And they’re precious beyond human valuation
But you dare not take them for granted or they’ll drift away like smoke
And the warmth of their caring will vanish
Like the chill of the endless nights
Most of my friends are unknowns and they probably won’t rate an obituary
Unless they live and die in small towns where nothing much ever happens
But a few of my friends are big people, they’ve made the world
Ring with laughter down to its gaseous burning core
They’re famous, sensitive, talented and their names are household words
Yet they are no more precious in God’s eyes or in mine
Than those wonderful nobodies who live and die in small towns
Who is your friend? He’s someone who warms you with a nod
Or with the unspoken word in hard times when you’re hurting beyond words
Who is your friend? She’s someone who holds you to her breast
And sighs softly into your hair when no other medicine can stop the pain
A friend is someone who clinks his glass against yours
Or answers the phone at three in the morning when you’re lost
And with a few words of encouragement and concern
Makes you realize you aren’t really lost at all
Friends come in both sexes and in all shapes and sizes
The most important thing to have in common is the ability
To share with you your most sky-splitting joys or your deepest
Most awesome sorrow, for, they are your friends.
I couldn’t put it any better.

To me friendship means that you are in a way adopting that person to be a part of your family. You are showing them you care what happens to them, be it good or bad. That your there for the long haul..even if its an unhappy long trek on the path of life. And that even if there are fights, distances and misunderstandings..you are still friends.
When it comes to fighting to keep that friendship alive, you need more then physical strength because sometimes the test of the bond is much more harder to deal with. You swallow alot of pride, admit embarressing truths, forgive and forget even when it’s hard, try to accept things you normally wouldn’t, and all and all go out of your way just to show you care. But boy oh boy, fighting with words and feelings can really be so much harder then any physical fight. But the tresure at the end of this hard road is so worth the effort.

Friendship to me is something to treasure. A friend is a person you may share a history with. Being an Army brat, it was hard for me to keep up with friends. My best-friend, Niki, and I met during our sophmore year in high school. She opened her doors for me when I was kicked out of my house at the age of sixteen. A couple months after that, when I had to move out of state, we made sure to keep in touch. Now, though we may live states apart, we still get together and reminice about all the trouble we used to get in.
Everytime we get together, it’s like opening a time capsule, it’s amazing what one remembers and not the other, and it feels good to know we went through a lot together and are still there for each other

Do you know, I think this is the best chat we’ve ever had.
I went to the dental hygenist the other day (you really wanted to know that :!: ) and she was saying that she measures days as warm fuzzies, or cold pricklies… this is definitely a warm fuzzy, so thank you, ladies.
It’s breakfast time here in the UK, but I’m going to check in again at lunchtime and then again shortly after that to pick our winner.
Have a good sleep, or a great day- whichever is appropriate!

My computer went down last night in the middle of a huge electrical storm, but here I am!!!
How great to see Tess from Singapore!!! I really must publish a list of all the countries that join us either here or on my website diary (one of the authors I know has a rolling list of countries at the side of her Blog, but I haven’t worked out how to access one yet
My daughter pulled 16# out of the list, which I know you will all agree is great, because that’s Cheryl S
Huge congratulations Cheryl, and thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to write out those lyrics for us. I’ve printed mine out and pinned them above my desk- so a very personal thank you from me.
See you here next month, ladies, and thank you all so much for taking part.
Hugs around the world

The best thing about this writing business is the way that it has meant that I’ve met so many lovely people. People who have become my great friends when I wouldn’t have met them at all if it hadn’t been for romance writing.
You’re one of those special people, Susan - someone I’m so glad that you came into my life. Your presence at my special celebration in Lincoln helped to make it the really wonderful occasion it was. I’m so glad that you were ‘bought’ by Harlequin so that I got a chance to meet you.
Hope to see you again soon
love

Kate, that’s really lovely… you brought an audible ‘Aaaah’ out of me when I spotted your post, and gave this day a wonderful start. Thank you so so much.
You know you were one of the reasons I loved Presents the way I do, so thank you again. I’m so happy to call you my friend.
That’s the wonderful Kate Walker everyone who was kind enough to invite me to the celebration for her 50th book. No one is looking forward to the next 50 more than me!
And Cheryl= I ‘m back here because I forgot the most important thing of all!!!
Could you please send your snail mail address to lee@susanstephens.net so Lee can send off your prize?
Thank you once again, and my apologies for leaving this out in my last mail
Hope to see you all here again next month I’m looking forward to it already
