Name Game

Dara Girard

A little Chihuahua popped into my latest story Taming Mariella, which I just handed into my editor. I don’t know where she came from, but she popped into a scene wearing a pink suit and a matching owner.

That got me thinking about a recent reader question: Why do you always include animals in your stories? My answer? I don’t know. I hadn’t even noticed I did that until it was brought to my attention (one of my many blind spots). Then I started looking back–dogs, birds, or cats always seem to show up in my books. My current project has a lizard. Hmmm….what does that mean? It means I like animals (yes I watch Animal Planet and I’m not ashamed to admit it) so my characters (at least some of them) also like animals.

Which brings me to my true reason for writing. My latest pet likes to run around the house at night. She is very sweet and she needs a name (no Liza the Lizard please). The creator of the most interesting name will receive a signed copy from my backlist. I’ll make my selection on Wednesday 3 Eastern Time Thanks for your help and the nameless lizard thanks you too.

  7. We have lizards for pets, not these names will help your list much.

Chico he is our male bearded dragon.
Devlin, for short we call her Devie. When we named her we thought she was a boy.
    Sambucca,
    Ammereto.

Good luck picking a name, sometimes it’s like trying to name a child, lol.

  8. A few years ago two stray cats decided to call our yard home ~ a mother and a half grown male kitten. My sons called the boy kitten TIGER and the mother T.M. (short for TIGER’S MOTHER) :???:

  11. My mom is Mrs. Malaprop come to life. She calls the geckos where she lives Geicos. She’s seen one commercial too many. LOL No I know you can’t use that, I just couldn’t help sharing. A name should reflect the owner as well as the pet’s character, so it’s tough to come up with names out of the blue. But …

    Gandolf
Frodo (I had a cat for 18 years with this name)
Larry (the Lizard) nice and alliterative

  17. OUTSTANDING! I can’t believe how creative you are. These names will last me for a long time. I will eventually settle one one, but in the meantime I couldn’t choose just one so here’s what I’ll do: You’re all winners. If you would like to claim your prize please contact me at my website. There’s a limited number of some of my backlist so give me a first, second and third choice. Many thanks.
