Love Those Office Romances

Ann Christopher

Sooo… Did you see the season finale of The Office last night?

Jim asked Pam out for dinner! Yay!

Yes, yes. I know this isn’t a big deal like, say, a consummation or a marriage proposal, but I’ve waited years for it and I’m entitled to my moment of excitement.

First Pam was engaged to Roy the jerk, and Jim adored her in silence. Then Jim finally confessed his love, but Pam insisted she’d still marry Roy. Then Pam came to her senses and fired Roy, but by then Jim had moved to the Stamford office to get away from Pam. Then Jim met and began to date Karen. Then the offices merged, and Jim and Karen came back to Pam’s branch. All this season I’ve had to watch Pam watch Jim date Karen. Then, finally, last week, Pam summoned her courage and told Jim she cared for him, and last night, on the last episode until the fall season begins, Jim asked Pam on a date.

O happy day!

There’s something about office romances that I just love. Maybe it’s the inherent risk involved if it doesn’t work out and the co-workers still have to see each other. Maybe it’s the close proximity, where one person may not feel free to confess his/her feelings, but is still close enough to touch the object of his/her affection. Whatever it is, I’ve written two books with office romances: Trouble, featuring a lawyer and his law clerk, and my January, 2008 Harlequin/Kimani Press book, Sweeter Than Revenge, featuring publicists.

What about you? Do you love office romances? Did you clap with glee during the last five minutes of The Office? Have you ever had an office romance? Comments, please. I’ll give away a copy of Trouble to a commenter at the end of the day.

  1. I’m more of an UGLY BETTY romance person, myself.

Oh, and to everybody: SORRY FOR THE BLOG OUTAGE THIS MORNING!!

  2. Ann, I’m a big fan of office romances as I’ve had two, okay three. Yes, all at the same office. tee-hee but that is also where most affairs start too. Because let’s face it, a lot of people spend more time at work then they do at home. You end up seeing more of your office pals then you do your own family.

  3. well, Alison hangs out here, and I don’t like to talk about the woman that came (and left!) before she rescued me… but my previous significant personage was someone I worked with. It was one of those stories where she was dating a guy that I didn’t like, so I had to go and date her and perhaps “rescue” her. I did. She’s the mother of my son, and she and I had just the nastiest little breakup, but she wasn’t working at the same place I was when that happened. I’ve seen office breakups. Never pretty!

  4. Oh - I’m a fan of office romances when the people are single! But when I worked for a financial institution in a major city, many of the romances taking place were people having affairs on their spouses. I lost all respect for some of my coworkers! We even had a woman come to the office and caught her husband with his girlfriend. Not pretty at all! She let him have it in front of everyone!
But for those unattached, the office can be a great place to find a date.

  5. I started watching The Office out of curiosity because Scranton isn’t to far from where I live. I really enjoy it and it’s fun to see our local weatherman on their TV in the background. The last five minutes were delicious!

I’ve never had an office romance, but I do love to read about them in books.

  6. Oh, and for the record…all my romances were with single men!! I dont’ want anyone to think I was a homewrecker…

  7. Yes I have had an office romance when I was very young.

And I only have watched The Office a few times.

  8. As long as they do not conflict with work then why not have fun and enjoy yourselves. I have never had one .

  9. Wow–we’re having some true confessions here today, huh?

My husband and I met in law school, not an office, but I WAS a little concerned about the possible fallout if things went south.

Walt, I hope it’s safe for you to go home tonight. ;-)

Susan, yes, I loved those last 5 minutes of THE OFFICE, and may need to watch them again…

Vivi Anna, thanks for the clarification!

For those of you in offices with extramarital affairs and/or boss having relationship with subordinate–isn’t that tough on office morale?

  10. I like reading about office romances because the characters already know each other and there is usually some history between them.

  11. I have never had an office romance but had a friend who did with the top guy and they got married eventually. Also, my first dh had an office romance and kicked me to the curb and they got married. I now hear it isn’t going good or at least wasn’t; not that I’m interested being we never had children together and so no communications after.

  12. Yes, I love office romances. Moonlighting was one of my favorite shows. I have only watched the Office a few times and I did not watch last night. I have been involved in two office romances. The first relationship ended after I had moved on to a new job and he moved on to a new romance. My second relationship is still going strong as my husband and I have been married for over 23 years. Also, we are back to working together again.

  13. I haven’t been involved in one myself. But it stands to reason that people would develop personal relationships in the workplace where we spend the major part of lives at and it being the place where we meet the most people. I like the office romance storyline because it’s so rife with problems on the onset. The risks are high and I find that adds to the temptation level and heightens the emotions.

  14. I’ve never been an office romance either. But since you spend most of the day in the office you tend to become friendly. I’ve flirted and enjoyed myself, but never nothing more.
