I’ll admit it. I’ve got a thing about writing military heroes. Maybe it’s because my hubby is a retired Army officer, or maybe it’s because there’s something interesting about the variety of personality quirks I can create within a military or former military character. In MALE CALL (to be released May 29 by Samhain Publishing www.samhainpublishing) my latest military character, Sean, is an Army reservist. His cubicle buddy, software engineer Eve Carmichael, always thought of him as geek. When she starts a correspondence with him while he’s in Iraq, they create a new facet in their already secure friendship. They not only realize how attracted they are to each other, but Eve sees the world through another perspective because of Sean’s experiences overseas. In the letters they send to each other, they explore not only their sensual side, but the growing feelings between them.
I’ve written several heroes in my books that used to be in the military, and basically almost every hero in my SIA series at EC is former military. They’re dangerous to the bad guys, but their protectiveness and care for the heroines is just one of the things that makes them irresistible. Check out the anthology BY HONOR BOUND (Ellora’s Cave) for three stories that deal with a military family. Kate Hill, Arianna Hart and myself enjoyed writing these connected tales and putting our heart and soul into these stories.
MALE CALL is a June 29 release at Samhain Publishing. Stop by my website at www.deniseagnew.com or www.samhainpublishing.com to read an excerpt.
Do you enjoy military or former military heroes? If so, why?

I will usually pick up any book that peeks my interest. If it has a strong, sexy military man all the better. There is nothing like a guy in a uniform. Of course, a guy in a mechanic’s uniform can also be sexy if they are written the right way. I will look forward to picking up your book, it sounds wonderful.

Patty,
Now you’re giving me ideas for a story…sexy mechanic! Seriously, you’re absolutely right. If an author creates a character that is rich and deep and absolutely great, how can you resist him no matter what the uniform is? :)

I think when it comes to military, I can only think of ones where they are former, not presently in. Whether it’s a contemporary or Regency where they were in the war against Napoleon. LOL I’m not really a person who likes guys in uniforms (I’m a suit gal, actually) but hey, as long as it’s a guy, who cares what they’re wearing (or not wearing) ;)

;-) Hi Lois,
Hey, we can’t all be into guys in uniforms. :) And suits can be HOT, too.

I loved “Honor Bound” - I think the anth gave a very realistic yet sexy take on military relationships. It’s a fave re-read.
Your latest, “Male Call”, sounds awesome. I bet it’s got a lot of intense emotion in it and I like that the characters already know each other. Do you know of any plans to release it in paperback?

Hey Stacy! Thanks for the lovely compliment on BY HONOR BOUND. I loved writing MAJOR PLEASURE, which is the title of my novella in the anthology.
As for MALE CALL I’d always wanted to write a story that deals with a soldier writing to a woman and the process of them learning more and more about each other over time. And for a novella I do think it’s intense in a certain respect and there’s a tiny bit of humor that crept into their letters.
It’s only novella size so unless I pair it up with some other stories, it probably wouldn’t go out in print. BUT, and this is just in the maybe stage right now, I may have two more military oriented stories set in the same town and if those three were put together then they would probably go together as print. That’s in the not for certain stage yet. :) I’ll definitely let you know if I decide to do that, though.

Thanx Denise. I’ll keep my eye out for it. And I might just get it from Samhaim anyway - I’ve loved the ebooks I’ve gotten from them so far.

Sure why not like men in uniform - or who were in uniform. Any type of hero is great as long as he is caring, sexy and story well written and believable. Give me a sexy next door neighbor, carpenter (good with his hands - hee hee), successful businessman, a cop and on and on.

Pat,
It all comes down to the talent of the writer to make us fall in love with that hero, eh? Whether he’s a man in any kind of uniform or not. :
