Have Passport, Will Travel

Tessa Radley

One of my greatest passions is travel. So it’s hardly surprising that one of my favourite pastimes is looking for dream destinations to visit…one day. I like to call this love of flicking through brochures and googling places like Sardinia, Greek Islands, Samoa…Okavango research. But sometimes it’s simply just another name for procrastination because I’m not really ever going to get to those places.

But there are some I am determined to get to. Like Western Samoa.
Western Samoa
This photo was taken by my friend Shelley Munro who has just returned from a lazy week there-so I’ve been inspired by her photos to new levels of googling frenzy.

Then there’s Fitzroy Crossing and The Kimberleys in Western Australia. Several years ago my family and I spent six months backpacking down the east coast of Australia—my sons were aged 2 and 4 at the time. It was sheer bliss. Not the hell you might have imagined it would be. But we didn’t venture up the wilder west coast. And I have a serious yen to do that some day in the not too distant future. That urge is worsened by the snips of research I’m doing into the diamond mines located in The Kimberleys for Silhouette Desire’s 2008 DIAMONDS DOWN-UNDER continuity. It’s research, I tell myself. So why not just go walkabout?

Then there’s the Okavango Delta. Some day I will sit in a mekoro, a dugout canoe, and drift past the elephants on the banks. I’ll try hard not to think of the hippos in the water below.
Mekoro

And when the yearning all becomes too much I visit one of the glorious beaches near my home and wonder why I hanker after those far-off places.
Beach bliss
Are there places you want to visit? Someday…maybe soon? Or do you have some secret haven not far from home that requires no passport and restores your inner serenity?

  5. I would love to see Greece–all the monuments and mythology–seems to give it a mystical atmosphere. And then there’s Italy, especially Tuscany, always featured in movies as a simple, beautiful land. Of the places I”ve already been, Grand Cayman was the most lovely.

  30. I have dreamed about going to Italy for so long I don’t think that it can live up to my expectations. I also would love to go to Ireland, Scotland and South America. I plan on going to the Carribean this year, so I should also add that to my list.

by Patty L. on April 6th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

  31. Wow, it’s awesome to see how many of us dream of visiting the same places. Kim, isn’t it fabulous having that beach close to home? And I think the idea of travelling alone with the dh is great. And I love seeing the places where some of you have already travelled…more places to dream about.

The West Indies are hosting the Cricket World Cup right now…and the New Zealand and Australian teams are doing well. So down here the Carribean is all the buzz. Wish I could be in Barbados for the final.

And thanks for all the congratulations, it’s such an exciting time for me!
