About our Contests and Giveaways

Cover me, cover you

Dara Girard

Thanks to your excellent suggestions, I’ve decided to hold a blog chat for my April release The Glass Slipper Project during my next posting date April 17th. During the chat, I plan to have prizes to give away. One prize I hesitate about is the one you see here:

A cover flat! I’m not quite sure what readers do with these, so once again, I need some input from you.

What would a signed cover flat mean to you?
Do you know of people who collect them?
Do you know of individuals who use them in strange or interesting ways (as placemats perhaps?).

I would love to know. For those of you who respond, guess what? I will be doing a drawing on Wednesday. And what will the prize be? A signed cover flat and a copy of the book.

  1. As for myself, I do not really care for a bookmark or coverflat as a prize. Now a book or gift certif to a bookstore, that is a prize. Hope you are not offended.

  2. Right now I have several signed cover flats and don’t know what to do with them. I am in the process of moving so they are all packed now. I haven’t found a use for them yet. I myself prefer the book.

  3. Sorry . . . I’m with the other two. I like looking at the covers but have no real idea what to do with them. That is a beautiful cover though!

  4. I do not use cover flats but like to see the art, otherwise I love the book itself.

  5. I don’t know what you would use the cover flap for. I would have no use for it. I love to win books. I am glad that you are going to do a chat, I will definitely stop in. By the way, I love your cover.

  6. I have many coverflats and bookmarks, but no real use for them. I have them all saved in a folder.

by Susan on March 20th, 2007 at 10:01 am

  7. I pair the bookmarks and cover flats with the book if I’m fortunate to have a book.
I have heard of people putting them in binders. They are a piece of art and some are beautiful art. One could make a collage on a bulletin board of them.

  8. I have several cover flats as well, but after awhile, they get tossed. I like bookmarks and books as prizes.

by Sandra on March 20th, 2007 at 10:57 am

  9. While I do prefer the book itself, or bookmarks which are very useful, I do collect coverflats. I think they can be one more way to get the word out about your book, and I do know some readers other than myself that collect them. I do not know of any unusual uses for them lol. To me, I think they serve as good advertisement and a nice collector’s item, but little else. Your cover is stunning, by the way!

    Hugs, Zara

  10. Yea, I got lucky this time with the cover. I can’t take credit for it, but will accept the praise.

Thanks for your honest comments. I too don’t know what to do with cover flats and can only think they’re used for sending with press kits or something to the media rather than readers. Personally, I know what to do with a bookmark, but a cover flat makes me scratch my head in wonder.

Fantastic idea about the collage. That gives me a great idea of what I can do with the six other cover flats cluttering my office.

So it seems that bookmarks and books make more sense than cover flats. I’ll certainly keep that in mind. But keep the comments coming.

  11. Hello Dara,

I love cover flats. What I do with them I get a big photo album that would fit the cover flats and I put them in there so I can show my friends and family the books I read and what books I am interested in reading and buying. It’s like a collage I make out of them. A dedication book to authors. I do know others who collect them as well but not sure what they do with them. This is what I do hope this helps with an idea on what to do with cover flats. I love them :-) Btw I love your new book cover very nice. I look forward to reading your new book. Sounds very good :-)

Also if I have room on the photo album page with the cover flat I also put the authors book mark next to it if I have an extra one of it. I love showing off authors goodies very fun :) and my family and friends seem to enjoy it with me.

    Hugssss

  12. I have many bookmarks and cover flats by various different authors. There okay but I prefer books to be able to read!

by Teresa W. on March 20th, 2007 at 1:14 pm

  13. If I had my choice between the cover flat, book marker, or a magnet. The magnet would win out every time. However the book itself is the very best.

by Tammy G. on March 20th, 2007 at 1:18 pm

  14. I have some coverflats but am not a big collector of them. I actually prefer a book mark because it is small and I use them every day. I don’t have a lot of storage space in my house so collecting anything is difficult.

by Maureen on March 20th, 2007 at 1:28 pm

  15. I have lots of coverflats and bookmarks and I really don’t know what to do with them all. I have brought some of the bookmarks to my favorite bookstores and they love to give them away to their customers. Like the others, I would like to win a book or a gift card. When I win a book from a new author and I like it, then I will buy more of her books so giving away a book is a good idea.

  16. I love collecting them! :) I love looking at the covers, and the signatures if there are any on the back. LOL Some that’s the only way I have an autograph, so if I never get a book signed, at least I have something signed by them. But I have a nice little stack, which I certainly never mind when it gets a little taller. I also have a box of bookmarks and other goodies. . . in the end, I’m happy to get anything. Sure, books are always number one, but coverflats are number 2 for me, bookmarks 3. :)

  17. Autographed books are the best. If it’s not autograohed I’ll let people borrow it otherwise, I encourage them to buy it. Bookmarks and magnets I do use but, I do have quite a few. Cover flats are not practical for me. I have no time to arrange them and no space for them! BOOKS are definitely the best promotional tool for me!!

  18. I have a great collection of cover flats, but I just have them stored in a box for now. Definitely interested in hearing any display ideas.

by Cathy on March 20th, 2007 at 2:06 pm

  19. I really don’t know what to do with cover flats when I get them. I usually fold them and use them as a bookmark or add them to my collection of author promo items. You have a nice cover. :)

by Crystal B. on March 20th, 2007 at 2:21 pm

  20. I have a relatively small collection of coverflats as well as lots of postcards and bookmarks. My coverflats are in a 3-ring binder in page protectors. I’m still trying to come up with a way to display them.

I think most of us would prefer a book or gift card as a prize, but I welcome coverflats when they come my way.

by Jennifer K. on March 20th, 2007 at 3:35 pm

  21. I have some coverflats that are signed by the authors that I will keep. I just put them in a stack and collect them. I enjoy any little thing that I get as a prize. It just means a lot when the author sends something, especially signed.

by Janet on March 20th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

  22. I’ve been saving any coverflats that I received for years. I have them in page protectors in binders. I’m not sure I can explain what the draw is. lol I do love to flip the pages and look at all of them. It’s like a photo album.

by Kim on March 20th, 2007 at 6:49 pm

  23. I know some people collect them. I used to, but now I send them on to other people who would appreciate them more.

But oh, I love that cover. It would so have me picking up the book.

by Nicole on March 20th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

  24. Sorry I don’t have any suggestions :( But that is a great question!

by Kathleen on March 20th, 2007 at 7:06 pm

  25. I have a small collection of coverflats which are just collecting. I haven’t come up with any ideas as to what I want to do with them. I much prefer the book itself.

by Linda F on March 20th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

  26. I don’t mind cover flats (especially if they’re autographed!), but I prefer autographed bookmarks (since I can actually use them), and of course, autographed books. :-)

by Karen W. on March 20th, 2007 at 8:13 pm

  27. I have no interest in the cover flats (sorry - but I toss them  ) but love getting a book, which I read and then pass on to DIL.

by Karen B on March 20th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

  28. I don’t know anyone who collects cover flats, but I have to say the issue hasn’t come up in many conversations, so I might be wrong.

Personally, I can’t think of much practical use for them, and I’m not interested in collecting them. I haven’t thrown away any I have received (probably because I’m a pack rat ), but I don’t actively work on getting more of them.

I still seem to value cover flats somehow, because the idea of using them as placemats and the risk of soiling them just doesn’t seem right.

If I had a library of my own - a room dedicated to books only, what a lovely idea - I could use framed cover flats as artwork on its walls. (It is artwork, after all, if commercial.)

by Paula on March 20th, 2007 at 11:17 pm

  29. Sorry I have no interest in cover flats or book marks. Give me a nice book.

by Karen T. on March 21st, 2007 at 11:59 am

  30. Congrats to Jennifer K!

I pulled her name for the drawing. Jennifer, please visit my website to contact me so that I can send you your prizes!!

Thanks everyone for your comments. They were very eye-opening and gave me an idea. Those of you who do like to collect cover flats, please send me an email and I’ll send you one to do with what you please.

  31. Congrats Jennifer!

  32. WooHoo.

Took a break from work and saw that I won. Thanks Dara. The coverflat will be a welcome addition to my collection (although I still don’t know what to do with them  ).
