Let’s Chat

Dara Girard

I’m thinking of holding a chat for my April 2007 release The Glass Slipper Project but I hesitate. I said I never would (never say never…ahem) but I’m willing to give it a go if readers would be interested. I’ve never done a chat before or attended one. What if I hold a chat and no one shows up? Despite my anxiety, I’m still curious and would like to hear from you. How would you answer the following:

What makes a chat interesting?

Have you ever attended a chat?

What made it fun? Or not?

On Wednesday, I’ll randomly select someone and give away a signed early copy of my book The Glass Slipper Project

  1. I am rarely able to attend chats because they are usually at night and I am busy with household chores. Also, there is ususally someone else on the computer at night. I have attended a couple of them and it goes quickly with people posting quickly and me trying to keep up with what they’re saying.

  2. Hi, I just love the cover of this book.

I can attend chats if they are at nite because I work days.

I enjoy the dialogue between the readers and learning about the author and it is always nice if prizes are given away - a very nice incentive - if it is a book or gift certif - it gives the readers a chance to try a book by the author or her new book.

    Good luck.

  3. The only chats I have attended have been at writerspace, and I’ve always enjoyed them. I agree that they need to be in the evenings - I work during the day and can’t access chats, blogs, etc. from work. I would be interested in chatting in another form.

I love learning about the author, the books he/she writes, hobbies, the writing process, about past books, future projects, etc. Let us know what you decide.

  4. Dara,

Pretty cover for this book. I like evening chats as well. I like to learn about the writer and her upcoming projects and how she became a writer. I also like to hear about the new book and how the author came up with the idea for the book.
Some chats do get chaotic. I prefer the all day launch party blogs. A blog where you can check back all day and the author responds or asks other questions. Readers can respond or ask questions at their leisure.

  5. I attended my first chat last week on the Knight Agency site. Author Renee Luke was talking about her new book and answering questions about writing in general. It was interesting because the participants were readers, writers and agents from Knight. I think the agents helped her a lot, asking pertinent questions the readers and writers weren’t asking and jumping in when there seemed to be a lull in the conversation. All in all, lots of fun and a great way for people to find out more about an author. GO FOR IT, DARA!

  6. I have never participated in a chat. I just recently started to blog and I love it. I love learning about the authors, how they got started and how that got published. If you decide to do a chat I would definitely like to check it out. Good luck. By the way, love the cover of your book, I would definitely pick it up just based on the cover.

  7. I tried a few times and was totally lost.

  8. I enjoy chats since they give you insight into the author and their goals. Chats are interesting since they are fun, informal and many people comment and it is entertaining and giveways are available too. Good promotion for the author and enjoyable.

  9. I agree with Sandra. Blog chats are much easier to follow and you can pop in and out when you have the time.

  10. I have been at quite a few chats. They give the reader an opportunity to get to know the author and his/her works. Quite often there is banter going on amongst the chatterers and it is very enjoyable. As others said, a prize is nice at the end of the evening for 1 or 2 participants. Sometimes the author or the hostess of the site draws a name and sometimes they have a contest such as name the author’s favorite color, name a fruit/vegetable or sometimes a question from the book excerpts that were put up during the chat. Readers ask questions and make comments. Do consider having one.

  11. Dara, so far I was able to attend very few chats, because of the time difference. Most of them are scheduled for 3 am where I live.

The fun is to directly interact with the author and other readers.

  12. Hi Dara,
I’ve been to a few chats and the ones where there aren’t a lot of people on are much more fun because then you have a chance to interact a little with the author and get to know them and learn about their upcoming books. I really enjoy these blogs because you can just leave a comment. It’s hard for me to join chats when I have a three year old to chase around the house.

  13. Dara,

Chat’s can be a lot of fun. If you’re not sure what to do, maybe you should attend one given by someone else first, if you want to see how it’s done. Good luck–and let me know if you decide to have that chat.

  14. I have attended a few chats and they are fun. I have discovered new authors that way. It is harder to attend many these days because I have a 4 month old baby girl and a 3 year old son. When I do get a chance to attend them they have been fun. I love reading the great excerpts and getting to know the author/ authors and their works.

  15. I have always wanted to attend a chat but I am still having trouble trying to figure the whole procedure out

by Maria Duncan on February 20th, 2007 at 1:29 pm

  16. I am never in the right place at the right time to join in a chat, which can be really annoying when they involve some of my favorite romance authors

by Aisling on February 20th, 2007 at 1:52 pm

  17. I have never attended a chat as they usually happen at night and I go to bed early because I work mornings. They look like they would be alot of fun though.

by Teresa W. on February 20th, 2007 at 1:59 pm

  18. I agree with Janet, I much prefer leaving the comments on the blog. Chats never fit in with my busy schedule

by Mary J on February 20th, 2007 at 2:13 pm

  19. Thanks a million for the input! I am really leaning towards having an all day blog chat so that people can access it whenever they want to. It won’t be too crowded or noisy or confusing and will accomodate everyone. I’ll let you know my final decision Wednesday, but keep the comments coming.

by Dara on February 20th, 2007 at 4:06 pm

  20. I have attended chats. I don’t like them because sometimes they are too crowded and I can’t get in or I keep getting logged out. Chats can be hard to follow if too many people are talking at one time and I can’t keep up with scrolling through the comments and entering my own. I do like hearing the author’s insight into their books. I think a blog would be much more enjoyable.

by Linda F on February 20th, 2007 at 5:01 pm

  21. I’ve done both blog and live chats (as well as loop chats). All of them are fun. I enjoy getting to know more about the author and their work. I have to echo the evening concern. I work days, but I also live on the West Coast. So, chats for me have to happened after 8 EST.

by Jennifer K. on February 20th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

  22. It’s always fun to chat live and here about the books and learn more about the author. I go to as many as I can. They can be a little crazy and I’m rarely bored. lol You could always have a chat with several other authors. Then you wouldn’t have to go it alone the first time.

by Kim on February 20th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

  23. I think chats are a great idea, but I have never experienced one

by MD on February 20th, 2007 at 11:50 pm

  24. I have never attended a chat and really have no desire to…no time. I prefer blogs were I can stop in whenever I have some free time. Best of luck if you hold one.

by Laurie G on February 21st, 2007 at 5:57 am

  25. I’m embarrassed  I tried a chat once or twice, but I couldn’t keep up. I much prefer blogs.
