Stop Everything!

Ann Christopher

You know what Tuesday, February 6, 2007 was, right? Yes? No? Here’s a hint: check out the sidebar to the right, under “New Books.” Still nothing? Sheesh.

It was the release date for my second book, Risk.

Not ringing a bell for you? *SIGH*

How about this date: July 21, 2007. That’s right—it’s the release date for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the (Sob!) last book in the series. Millions of people no doubt have that date circled in thick red ink on their calendars. I, for one, plan to go AWOL that day, and squirrel myself away in some quiet corner so I can find out, for once and for all, whether Snape is hero or villain. No writing will be done by me that day, no dishes washed, no beds made, no dinner cooked. Pizza will be ordered.

Other upcoming release dates on which I will be totally unproductive:

March 6th–J.R. Ward’s Lover Revealed;
April 25th—Karen Robards’ Obsession; and
August ???—Sandra Brown’s latest.

There are some authors whose books are so good that I will pay for a hardcover, or drive around town trying to find their latest release. Some authors for whom I will temporarily put the rest of my life on hold. Call me crazy, but that’s how it is, and that’s the power of a good book.

What about you? Which authors will you drop everything for? What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to get your hands on a certain book? Comments, please! I have three extra ARCs of RISK, and I’ll give them away later on tonight!

  1. Congratulations on your new book!

Right now I’m looking forward to Elizabeth Hoyt’s new book since I enjoyed her first one very much. Linda Howard is an author I’m always excited to read when she has a new book.

  2. Good morning, Ann! Congratulations on your release!

I can’t think of anything crazy I’ve done for a book, other than driving from store to store to store to find it. That seems normal to me. lol I’m a huge fan of Judith McNaught and rush to get her books along with Janelle Denison. Oh and I’ve never read a Harry Potter book…hanging head in shame.

  3. Congrats Ann! I see you got a great review of “Risk” in RT - 4 1/2 stars! WTG! Hey, do you know if you’ll be able to go to Lori Foster’s event this June? It would be fabulous if you could attend :)

I’d have to say Suzanne Brockmann and Judith McNaught have always been the authors that I drop everything for. Lisa Kleypas is a more recent addition. These ladies excel at the emotional intensity I love in my books. I’m happy for their success, but I also have to decide about getting their books in HC. I do for Brockmann, and Lisa is just coming out with her first HC, so that’s a decision I’ll have to make soon….

  4. Big congrats on the new release! The book sounds good.

Lover revealed is also a book that I can’t wait to get my hands on. One of the few authors, where I buy a HC is Sherrilyn Kenyon. The craziest thing that I ever did was to send my uncle to a bookstore, when he had a business trip to the States. I couldn’t get the newest releases over Amazon Germany, so he had to search through the Romance shelves. LOL

by Danny on February 8th, 2007 at 7:14 am

  5. Congrats to you Ann.

I havent done anything crazy, but autobuys are SEP, Susan Mallery, Lori Foster, Catherine Anderson, Rachel Gibson, Erin McCarthy to name just a few and I just run out and get them as soon as I can. If it is a hard cover, I ask my library to purchase it as soon as know it is coming out so I can be on top of the list.

  6. I think the craziest thing I’ve ever done to get book was go to Wal-Mart at midnight because James Patterson’s latest Alex Cross novel was due out that day. It was the only place that was open when the clock struck twelve, and I couldn’t wait until the bookstore opened at nine!

by Chicki Brown on February 8th, 2007 at 7:34 am

  7. Yeah! A new release!!!
I’ll also be in line for the last Harry Potter book!
I once had to visit 3 book stores to find a certain book! The first two stores had yet to put them on the shelves…which I think is rediculous since I live in a major metro city!

by Kathleen on February 8th, 2007 at 9:22 am

  8. Congrats. Great news! I try to reserve books immediately at the library so that I don’t have to wait ages. Especially books by Maeve Bincy and Karen Rose.

  9. I am hooked on JR Ward, Christine Feehan, LA Banks and Brenda Jackson. When a new book comes out in the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series (Ward), The Dark Series (Feehan), The Vampire Huntress Legends (Banks), The Westmorlands or The Steeles (Jackson), I hunt the book down and I put everything that can be put on hold on hold. And congrats on your second book! I loved it and can’t wait to get my hands on your third.

  10. Congratulations on your book!

The craziest thing I have ever done to get my hands on a book. Well, let’s see… I was reading a book from an author, one of her older books. And I didn’t know it was a trilogy. All the books were already out in the trilogy for years, so they weren’t in the stores any more. When I am reading a trilogy like that and I know all the books are out, I want them, like now. I like reading them all in order, one after the other. I hunted and hunted for the remaining books, used book stores, the library, amazon.com, half.com and on eBay. I found them. Believe it or not I had the books before I finished the first book that is how hard I looked.

  11. I have my must buys and will preorder those a month ahead on amazon.com so I know I will get them right away.

by Cherie Japp on February 8th, 2007 at 11:57 am

  12. The craziest thing I ever did to get my hands on a new release was the time I held the clerk at B&N at gunpoint while forcing her to search for a copy of Janet Evanovich’s “To the Nines”. Okay, just kidding about the gun, but I did make the clerk look in the storeroom for a copy. I knew it had to be there, the computer said they had copies!!!
The authors that I impatiently wait for new releases from are Janet Evanovich (you think??), Kim Harrison, MJ Davidson, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Alison Kent, Jill Shalvis, LK Hamilton (but only the Merry Gentry series), Deborah Smith, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips.

  13. Hi Ann -
    congrats on the new release.

There are a few books I just love to buy as soon as they’re available. I’ll preorder ones I’m really looking forward to or I’ll reserve them in advance of their release at our local library. Some authors I’m looking forward to their next releases are:
    Stephanie Bond (Mojo series)
    Laura Childs (Tea Shop mysteries)
    Joanne Fluke (Hannah Swenson mysteries)
Tamar Myers (Den of Antiquity series)
Rhonda Pollero (her new release in March - Knock-Off)

I love these authors and series, because when I pick up a new release, I feel like I’m visiting old friends again.

by Sandra M. on February 8th, 2007 at 12:40 pm

  14. I will drop absolutely everything for Susan Lewis books. I’m always raving about her books on my blog, she’s fabulous. I cannot wait for her books to come out in paperback so I always buy the hardcovers. And it’s always worth it.

Congratulations on Risk, I can’t wait to read it!

by Maria Duncan on February 8th, 2007 at 1:27 pm

  15. I’m pretty sure that I’ll be queuing up outside my bookshop at 00.01 am on July 21st waiting for Harry Potter. I’m obsessed

  16. YaY! Congrad’s on the new release Ann. I went your website and saw the video for Risk I loved it. The book sounds very good.

    Ok now for the question.
Which authors will you drop everything for?
Answer: So many of them *G* Cathryn Fox, CJ England, Nora Roberts, Leslie Kelly, Carly Phillips and many more.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to get your hands on a certain book?
Answer: I couldn’t wait for the paperbacks to be release so I did buy the hardcovers, bribed  Asked my fiance to get the book for me now cause I really need it. Of course he did get it for me *G* I even asked family & friends to get me the books I wanted for holidays * my b-day.

  17. Congrats on the new book! I remember when I was a teenager there was a book I wanted so I asked my dad to pick it up for me when he was downtown. That night I asked if he had gotten it and he said no. I was so disappointed - so I said I’d go and get it myself. Needless to say I really felt bad when he handed it to me and said “Happy early birthday.”

by Karen B on February 8th, 2007 at 3:38 pm

  18. I must say that there aren’t many authors I would drop everything for. I do love Julia Quinn books and will look for hers as soon as they come out…but I am pretty good at waiting until I can find the book…I don’t drive all over looking for them.

Congrats on the release of Risk! I looked for it today while I was out and couldn’t find it. It sounds like a great book and I look forward to reading it when I can get a copy!!!

by Jennifer Y. on February 8th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

  19. Donna Kauffman, Maeve Binchy, Marian Keyes and Nora Roberts are all authors I would drop everything for.

by Aisling on February 8th, 2007 at 4:22 pm

  20. Congrats on Risk Ann, I hope it sells well for you.

I’m a big fan of Linda Howard so I think she is the one who would make me drop everything

by MD on February 8th, 2007 at 4:33 pm

  21. Hi, all!

I tried to post earlier, but no dice. I hope this works!

Thanks for all the congrats for RISK!

JenniferY–RISK may be shelved in the African American section rather than the romance section. Thanks for looking for it.

Sooo… looks like we have several Harry Potter fans, several J.R. Ward fans, and some Linda Howard fans. Oh, and Nora, of course.

Craziest thing I ever did–drove 20 miles to Borders at 8 pm. on a Sunday night to get a copy of LOVER AWAKENED–after calling all over town to see who had it. It was worth it, though.

What about Sandra Brown? Any other Sandra Brown fans here?

  22. Hi Ann!
I used to always take the day off from work just to go get the newest Stephen King off the shelf first thing in the morning of the book’s release. I have already preordered my copy of Harry Potter and may go to the midnight craze at the bookstore when it comes out. Other than that, I haven’t done anything really crazy for a book. One of my favorite new authors is Robin T. Popp. She writes vampire paranormal romance and I can’t seem to put her books down until they are done. I make sure to get her books as soon as they come out.

by Janet on February 8th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

  23. I have a lot of auto buy authors on my list, but I would say that my have-to-have-now authors are JD Robb, Lora Leigh, Sarah McCarty, Shannon McKenna and LKH. I have never done the midnight store haunting, but I have been the first person in line at the bookstore. And if you knew how much I hate early mornings, you’d know that was a big deal for me.

by cathy on February 8th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

  24. I checked that section Ann, but it wasn’t there…but they didn’t have a lot of the newer books out there yet…I am going to a bookstore tomorrow that, according to their website, has it and will check.

by Jennifer Y. on February 8th, 2007 at 8:11 pm

  25. Susan Elizabeth Philips, Nora Roberts, Lori Foster, Donna Kauffman, Erin McCarthy, Susan Mallery and Carly Phillips. These are only a few of my favorites are are plenty more.

by Patty L. on February 8th, 2007 at 8:25 pm
