Do You Genre Jump?

Jaci Burton

Are you a devoted genre reader? Do you stay strictly with contemporaries? Or are you a diehard historical reader? Do you read only paranormals, or are you one of those who will read any genre, as long as the story is great?

Or maybe you follow the author, no matter what genre they write in.

I love romance, no matter the genre. I started out reading historicals many, many years ago, and stuck with those for a long time. Then I branched out into contemporaries, and eventually paranormals. I love mixing genres and I never get tired of reading one or the other, nor am I devoted to only one. It keeps my mind fresh to read a contemporary, then switch over to a paranormal after that. And since I write both paranormals and contemporaries, it’s a way to keep me in tune with the great books out there by some phenomenal authors. And I can never drift too far away from my first love, historicals.

So what about you? Do you stick with one genre, or do you jump around and read several? Do you follow your favorite author no matter what genre they write?

What are your favorite genres?

  1. Good morning Jaci,

I try to change the genre after every book that I read, because that way a genre can’t get boring.

My absolute favorite genres are Parenormals and Historicals

  2. Oh I totally genre jump. I can’t just read one thing. I love contemps, historicals, paranormals, romantic suspense, erotic romance. Series like Evanovich and Robb. Anthologies like Brava. Humorous stuff like MJD. I want it all…except for maybe chick lit. I want the happy ending.

  3. Yes, I love all the genres. I’ve only recently dicovered paranormals and I love them! Women have so much choice for romances, it’s great!

  4. I’m a Genre Jumper. My favorite Genre would have to be historical anything before the 1900’s. And yes, I do have a few authors I do read no matter what they write. Johanna Lindsey, Bertrice Small, Dorothy Garlock, Lynn Kurland, Karen Marie Moning, are the authors I will readnow matter what so far. They haven’t let me down yet.

  5. I jump around as the spirit moves me. When I find an author whose work I enjoy I follow them across genres and do what I can to hunt up their backlist as well. I don’t have a favorite genre.

Janet Chapman’s THE STRANGER IN HER BED
    Savannah Russe’s BENEATH HER SKIN
    Sherrilyn Kenyon’s THE DREAM HUNTER
Rhys Bowen’s IN DUBLIN’S FAIR CITY

  8. Variety truly is the spice of life in my reading habits! Paranormal and Romantic Suspense are my favorites followed closely by historicals, contemporary, mysteries, and comedy. To be honest, as long as it is engaging and entertaining, I’ll read it. I’ll even read comic books (graphic novels) if the subject is one of interest.

  12.

Jaci, I pretty much follow authors rather than genres, though I do have a sweet spot for paranormals and especially romantic suspense that is hot. :)

  13. I’m pretty much author driven in most of book choices and I’ll follow my favorite authors from genre to genre. I’ll also pick up a book based on “buzz” from my online writing friends. I discovered Tara Janzen and J.R. Ward this way.

  14. Hi Jaci!
I just picked up a copy of Surviving Demon Island. Can’t wait to read it! I’ll read just about any genre. I love historical romance, paranormals, romantic suspense and contempory romances. I also enjoy mysteries and horror but I have to be in the mood to read those. A lot of authors have been switching genres and I don’t mind. I’ll still read them.

by Janet on January 31st, 2007 at 6:43 pm

  15. I only read contemporary romance since I started reading romances over 20 years ago until about 2 years ago. I read my first historical romance by Julie Garwood and I’ve been addicted every since. So now I can’t get enough of historical romance especially the older sweeter ones. The regency period is my favorite but I enjoy all historical periods. I still read contemporaries for variety but right now I prefer the past . I do like some light paranormal, such as time-travel, ghosts, etc but only to enhance a historical or contemporary story. I don’t read suspense because I get too impatient and end up skipping to the end and then I ruin the rest of the book for myself :???:. ~readingaddict

  16. I read in genres. I don’t follow authors. And I usually glom that genre until my eyes fall out of my head or I get bored. I glommed horror when i was young, then I read my first contemp romance by Nora when I was 19, then I read only contemp romances, then onto thrillers and only thrillers, than onto chick lit in the late 90’s, then onto paranormal, then to fantasy, and now I’m back in paranormal…
