Will You Watch?

HelenKay Dimon

By now you know the Lifetime Network has turned four Nora Roberts’ books into original movies. They are: Angels Fall; Blue Smoke; Montana Sky; and Carolina Moon. To promote the movies (and seel more books), Nora’s publisher (Berkley) has printed additional copies of the books and sent out special floor displays. Berkley and Nora also provided Lifetime with excerpts of two of Nora’s upcoming releases, High Noon (as Nora) and Innocent in Death (as J.D. Robb) which were posted on Lifetime’s website during the airing of the first movie last night.

From all that, it sounds as if Lifetime and Berkley are betting big on these movies. I can understand why. Nora is huge. Like, publishing phenomenon huge. Like, how-does-she-do-it huge. Question is whether or not her popularity will translate into Lifetime movie watching. By the time this posts, we may know the answer.

Some romance novels have become movie theater movies. But, this isn’t the first romance novel to be turned into a television movie. Years back, I watched the tv movie version of Linda Howard’s Loving Evangeline. Other than the title, there was little resemblance between the book and the mediocre tv movie. There were others, too. All of which stayed off my radar.

But, I’m wondering what romance readers think. Watch or no? If you did watch Angels Fall, did you like it? Do you remember other romance novels (other than ones by Danielle Steele, who I’ve never really considered romance) that became television movies? Any of them any good?

Give me your thoughts between now and Friday and I’ll randomly select a person from those commenting to win a $20.00 Amazon gift certificate. You can use it on a book or a movie - your choice :)

  1. I didn’t have time to watch it last night, but I have it on tape. I plan to watch/tape all of them. I can’t think of any romance novels turned into movies. It’s possible I saw one and didn’t even know the story came from a book. I love to watch romance movies so even if I haven’t read the book, I’ll want to see it.

  2. I didn’t watch it because I am not a big NR fan - I prefer her JD Robb series - but I know a lot of people who were planning on watching or taping it.

I can’t think of any really good adaptations of romance novels. The most infamous one I can think of is the botched “Rosehill” based on a fabulous book by Julie Garwood. The movie was horrible. I hope the Lifetime movies are much better.

  3. I haven’t seen any romance movies I really liked. I did see Unfinished Business by Susanne Forster but I prefered the book version!

  4. Hi,
I forgot Nora’s movie was on last nite but did get to watch most of it. I hadnt read the book, so I cant compare. Since I missed the beginning of the movie, I wasnt sure what was going on but from what I saw, it was enjoyable.

I have seen many Danielle Steels books on lifetime - Jewels, The Ring, Kladescope, Fine Things, Family Album. Vanished - they were all very enjoyable.

I also saw one or two by LayVryle Spencer. James Patterson’s Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas and Donna Vanliere’s Christmas Shoes and the 2nd one - all were very enjoyable and kept with the books.

I forgot; I believe there was a Debbie Macomber (who I love) movie on but cant remember the title - isnt that awful? And Linda Lael Miller’s Last Chance Cafe which was soso - the book as always was better.

All of Nicholas Spark’s books which made it to the big screen, cant compare to his books, especially - Messsage in a Bottle and The Notebook which I thought were great books.

Sorry to go on and on.

  5. I didn’t watch it, as I realised it was on in the middle of a publisher’s chat. I figure I’ll wait and see what people say about it (I’m not big on TV or movies in the first place, and I’d rather not waste time watching something that turns out to be crap  ). If it’s good, I’ll catch it on a re-run or find it online. :)

  6. I watched it, but since I’ve never read the book I don’t know whether it was a good adaptation or not. It was a good story — must’ve been since my husband watched it to the end. I didn’t particularly care for the actor who played the hero though.

by Denise Jones on January 30th, 2007 at 7:58 am

  7. I haven’t had the opportunity to watch a movie based on a relatively new romance novel. Would certainly give it a go but in truth when seeing a film and reading the book I tend to find the book better. Part of that is because I get the thoughts and perceptions of the characters whereas the movie does not often offer me the same. For example, I love the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s but I much prefer the book for the greater depth and nuance.

by Little Lamb Lost on January 30th, 2007 at 7:59 am

  8. I didn’t watch it, since we don’t subscribe to cable or sattilite. I have read the book, it was good so the movie should have been too. I have watched several other movies from romance books before and loved them. If the books are good, I wish more movies would be made.
The Notebook. Message in a Bottle. A Perfect Stranger. Changes. Daddy. Fine Things. Full Circle. Jewels. Kaleidoscope. No Greater Love. Secrets. Vanished.

by Tammy G. on January 30th, 2007 at 8:06 am

  9. I forgot to mention that since we don’t subscribe to TV programs. We buy the movies when they come out on DVD. So I have all of the movies listed above plus some I didn’t mention.

by Tammy G. on January 30th, 2007 at 8:26 am

  10. I didn’t watch it either. Simply because I have the book and would prefer to read the book rather than watch the movie. The book is in my TBR pile. However, I may try to catch one of the other movies. I’m thinking maybe Carolina Moon. I’ve already read the book.

by Sandy L on January 30th, 2007 at 8:41 am

  11. My comments are the same as Sandy’s…didn’t watch it - have the book in my TBR stack. I also prefer books over movies.

by Christy on January 30th, 2007 at 8:47 am

  12. I was not home to watch it, but would have really liked to have seen it. If I have the chance, I’ll watch it.
I seem to remember a WE movie from a HQ romance called “Diamond Girl” by Diana Palmer.
It was a fairly interesting way to waste some time on a Sunday afternoon.
And I agree with Pat L on the adaptation of “Last Chance Cafe”. It was okay, but the book was better.
I did enjoy the movie version of Cara Lockwood’s “I Do (But I Don’t)” as much as i liked the book.

by Angie T on January 30th, 2007 at 9:33 am

  13. Does Rosamunder Pilcher books like the Shellseeker count? The movies are okay, but I haven’t read any of her books so I can’t compare it.

Normally I prefer books over the movie versions

by Danny on January 30th, 2007 at 9:36 am

  14. I watched it and was only mildly impressed. I have not read the entire book, because it was hard for me to get into it. I will try it again since I have watched the movie, but I still don’t know if I will enjoy it. I am a huge fan of Nora’s true romance stories, but she is not writing them anymore. I did not go on Lifetime.com to read the experts, because I was reading another book during commercials.

by Patty L. on January 30th, 2007 at 9:39 am

  15. I forgot it was on last night. I will watch Carolina Moon. I have watched Nicholas Spark’s movies, but haven’t read the books to those yet.

by Amy S. on January 30th, 2007 at 9:44 am

  16. I’ve watch some of the Danielle Steel’s books turned movies and I found they were not too bad. Can’t remember the titles though.

by Deborah on January 30th, 2007 at 9:47 am

  17. By chance, I was watching a movie made from a Harlequin novel. It was definitely a “B” movie as in bad….a good-looking some-what well known actor and a unknown plain actress with dreadful lines and I don’t even think it was that similar to the book story.

by Lisa W on January 30th, 2007 at 9:50 am

  18. I find I am usually disappointed when a book is made into a movie…especially when you don’t even recognize anything about the book it’s supposed to be about.

by Shuck Ying on January 30th, 2007 at 9:51 am

  19. I agree with some of the others–if you’ve read a book the movie usually disappoints. There’s something about the compelling emotions of a romance that don’t seem to be transferred to the screen with the same impact of the written word. I guess it’s how the reader envisions it all.

by Robin Bayne on January 30th, 2007 at 10:08 am

  20. I love Nora Roberts and would love to see these movies, but we don’t get those channels in Ireland. I’ll order them on dvd when the are available. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie that’s as good as the book it’s based on. Never

by Maria Duncan on January 30th, 2007 at 10:33 am

  21. I see that someone mentioned ‘The Notebook’ above and I think that is one of the best movies that came from a book. But I don’t think books turned into movies work very often

by Mary J on January 30th, 2007 at 10:35 am

  22.
I watched the movie, loved it. This one worked
Have seen Danielle Steel and others. Liked them

by Joan D on January 30th, 2007 at 10:57 am

  23. I did not watch this show but normally just feel disappointed with the outcome. I enjoy the books and the movies never live up to the expectation. When I am reading the book I can picture the people, scenes and the interaction. The movie is a letdown.

by diane on January 30th, 2007 at 11:11 am

  24. I have never read a Nora book…but I plan on recording the movies because I might want to read the books and watch them someday.

I tend to do things backwards…see the films and then read the books…I don’t always purposely do it, but I seem to do it quite often.

One of the first movies that came to mind was one called “Rose Hill” starring Jennifer Garner. It was the movie that inspired me to read romance. It was based on Julie Garwood’s For the Roses. After watching the movie, I bought the book not knowing it was romance because the book and the movie were almost completely different…the characters had the same name and 4 boys found a baby…that was about all they had in common. Both were enjoyable though in their own way. But I liked the book better. The book was definitely an eye-opener to a 13 or 14-year-old who had never read a romance before. But after it, I was hooked.

I also recorded The Outsider with Tim Daly and Naomi Watts when it came on tv not long ago. I have the book it is based on, Penelope Williamson’s The Outsider, in the TBR mountain. I plan on reading the book and watching the movie in the next couple of months.

Suzanne Forster’s Blaze book Unfinished Business (I think that was the title) was also made in to a film, Romancing the Bride, that aired on Oxygen. I have the book in the TBR mountain and watched the film…will be interested to see if there are any similarities.

by Jennifer Y. on January 30th, 2007 at 11:16 am

  25. I want to watch them. I didn’t get to watch the first one last night and probably won’t get to see the others unless they rerun them on the weekend. I have to go to bed early and I can’t get my vcr to tape from the satellite.
I do like movies made from romances. I try not to judge them against the book.

by Crystal B. on January 30th, 2007 at 11:22 am

  26. I love Nora’s books but I didn’t watch the movie. I feel the book is always better and I want to read them first. I’ve read two of the other books that they are going to show so I will watch them. I may get the third one done in time to watch it, too. I have never seen a movie that I liked better than the book so I know I will be somewhat disappointed even if they do a good job.

by Carol on January 30th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

  27. I did watch parts of Angel Falls and I did like it. I’ll watch Montanta Skies next Monday as well. Currently, I don’t read Nora Roberts, but most likely I’ll pick up one of her books now. Good novels that have been turned into movies are The Notebook (Nicholas Sparks) and Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas (James Patterson).

by Sandra M on January 30th, 2007 at 1:00 pm

  28. I couldn’t watch last night but will when it’s on later this week. Love her books so hope the movies are great!

by Karen B on January 30th, 2007 at 1:07 pm

  29. I didn’t watch Angel Falls last night. One reason is the book is still in my ever grewing TBR pile, and I didn’t want to watch the movie before reading the book. However, the other reason I didn’t watch was for fear the movie would not be anything like the book and then disappointment would set in. When I read a book I set up what I think the world and characters are like from what the author writes. Yet, when books got “hollywoodized” sometimes you get more of a hollywood feel instead of what the author was actually going for in the book. So, the question for me is whether or not I will watch Blue Smoke because I absolutely love the book. Part of me is curious to whether the movie can live up to it or not.

  30. Wow, I have to see those movies, big Nora fan

  31. I don’t like it when books are turned into movies, I’ve been disappointed too many times.

by Aisling on January 30th, 2007 at 2:11 pm

  32. no, i didn’t. i haven’t really watched them. i always prefer the books to the movies as they have more details. movies can’t compete.

by Melissa V on January 30th, 2007 at 2:22 pm

  33. I did watch Angels Fall last night. I just happened to be checking to see what was on and it was just starting. I thought it was very good. I liked the suspense. I have the book but I haven’t read it yet so I don’t know how it compares to the movie. I think Heather Locklear did a great performance as the heroine. I normally don’t watch books turned into movies because they are never the same but I really enjoyed Angels Fall.

by Janet on January 30th, 2007 at 2:32 pm

  34. I thought Heather Locklear was much too old to play the heroine of that story so I didn’t bother watching. I was thinking of watching some of the other Nora movies though.

by Maureen on January 30th, 2007 at 2:33 pm

  35. I did watch the movie last night. Must admit I didn’t read the book so I don’t know how weel the movie followed the book. I enjoyed the movie and am looking forward to all the other ones to come. I also think that The Notebook was one of the best movies made from a book. Ryan Gosling what a hunk!

by Teresa W. on January 30th, 2007 at 2:34 pm

  36. I did not watch it. I am not much into watching TV lately. Just don’t have the time. Also, I am not usually not into the movie versions of books.

by Cherie Japp on January 30th, 2007 at 2:44 pm

  37. sob, sob I could not find it on my TV schedule so missed it but was ready to watch it.
I like the Danielle Steele movies I have watched on TV and I even own some on VHS.
I, like another commenter, have perhaps seen a book made into a movie and not know it was a book originally.

by RobynL on January 30th, 2007 at 2:50 pm

  38. I love Nora’s books and have read Angel’s Fall, but only managed to get half way thru the movie last night. I agree with Maureen, found Heathe’s age distracting, and the intensity of Nora’s written words just didn’t translate that well for me on the screen.

by cathy on January 30th, 2007 at 2:56 pm

  39. I’ve got it taped so I can watch it later this week. I haven’t read the book, though, so won’t be able to compare it to the movie. A couple of movies I saw after reading the books were Must Love Dogs and the Princess Diaries. In both cases the books were MUCH better than the movies, in my opinion.

by Gail Barrett on January 30th, 2007 at 4:05 pm

  40. I watched it and thought it was a pretty good adaptation of the book. A movie can never really capture the book completely, but I thought this one did a fair job. I made a friend watch it with me, and she said she’s willing to watch next week’s movie, too. So she liked it too.

by Alyssa on January 30th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

  41. Well, I didn’t see it because I just really don’t watch Lifetime. But sometimes the movie is good. . . like the Hunt for Red October, but then it had Sean Connery. . . LOL But Jurassic Park, it was a great movie, but if you’re looking for a comparison to the book, there were important parts that were glossed over. Now Phantom of the Opera, the Lon Chaney one compared to the book is great (minus the last five or so darn minutes — why did they have to change it??? LOL), the musical version is pretty good compared to the book (but great on it’s own!) :) And another version I love is the 1962 or 3 version — nothing like the book, but great on it’s own. :)

  42. I didn’t know that it was on and therefore I did not watch. I prefer to read romance books rather than watch the movie because then I can use my imagination to “see” the characters rather than rely on someone else’s vision.

by Linda F on January 30th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

  43. Great topic for today HelenKay! I’ve been waiting to discuss it :)

I had read the book when it first came out and watched the movie last night..well, at least most of it b/c I actually fell asleep!!! The book was soooo much better than the movie. I did not like the casting in this movie and I think that had to do w/ 80% of my opinion of the movie.

I had such high hopes for this movie! I love a good romance/suspense book and the movie did not do it justice. If I had not read the book, and just had watched the movie I would have been really confused about what was going on. There was too many scenes left out of the movie that would have helped explain certain situations…instead of seeing the movie and saying “yeah, like that would happen” or “how convenient that (whatever) was available.” Hopefully, that makes sense :)

Hopefully, the movies will get better…and maybe they will rerun this movie so I can see the very end :)

  44. the movie was good, did not read the book
some harlequin blaze were made to tv movies, they were cute. i did watch the all the stephen kings movies that were from books.
i want to see beverly barton books turn into movies.

by KIM H on January 30th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

  45. I watched the movie last night and it thought they did a good job on capturing the book. I am disappointed when I love a book and then the movie doesn’t capture the essense of the book.

by Dru Ann on January 30th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

  46. I watched it and thought it wasn’t too bad. Not so terrible that I couldn’t watch it at all, but not so good that I was on the edge of my seat. But oh, the actress who played Reece was very wrong. So ugly and weird looking. It did capture a lot of the book well. Of course, it was the only Nora Roberts book that I’ve read so far, excluding JD Robb stuff.

by Nicole on January 30th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

  47. I would rather read the book because a movie usually doesn’t compare to my imagination. I’m usually disappointed in the movie, wishing for more

by Jeanette Jackson on January 30th, 2007 at 8:10 pm

  48. Not sure of the title of the book but I believe it was the Moonspinners was made into a movie by Disney. Haley Mills was the star. Do I have to tell you that I didn’t even watch it cause I knew that this was a movie that would have been better if it was not PG rated!

by Joyce on January 30th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

  49. I have no problem watching movies made from books. I just go in without expectations, that way you can’t be disappointed.

by Sue A. on January 31st, 2007 at 3:12 am

  50. I couldn’t watch the movie because I don’t get lifetime.

I usually find that I like the movies if I watch them before reading the books they were made from. I don’t have any expectations and won’t be comparing it to the book the whole time. There have been a few movies that I saw after reading the book, such as Rose Hill based on Julie Garwood’s For the Roses and I was really disappointed in the movie because it wasn’t anything like the book. But I’m sure if I had seen the movie first I would have enjoyed it such as it was.

by Wanda on January 31st, 2007 at 3:27 am

  51. I didn’t watch it. I did watch a few of Danielle Steele liked hers. One movie I did enjoy and I still watch it till this day is Message In A Bottle By: Nicholas Sparks loved it and I did enjoy the book also but I enjoyed the movie more. I’m not really a big fan of reading Nicholas books but the movies are very good so I enjoy them more then reading the actual book. The Notebook was another great movie book by Nicholas.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by: Mitch Albom. The movie & book was excellent. I enjoyed it.

Now here is another excellent romance movie I fell inlove with. Just Like Heaven. This was a beautiful movie it had me in tears I loved this one. I haven’t read the book yet but the movie I love it :) The book is by Marc Levy. This is a must see.

    Hugssss

  52. I didn’t read or watch the movie. I’ve watched a lot of movies based on books, but the books are always better, some have been good. The problem is so many of them stray to far from the book and the only thing recognizable is the title. There was a Romance movie on last month I believe, on Lifetime based on Linda Lael Millers book Last Chance Cafe, and it was pretty good. Did anyone see it?

by Dena on January 31st, 2007 at 10:38 am

  53. I didn’t watch it. I’m in the camp which believes that most movie adaptations of a romance book fall short of the book itself.

by Cheryl S. on January 31st, 2007 at 8:17 pm

  54. I didn’t watch Angels Fall. I haven’t read the book either. I don’t read suspense romance because I get too impatient and end up skipping to the end and then I’ve ruined reading the rest of the book! I haven’t found a movie made from a book yet that I’ve enjoyed watching after reading the book. I don’t think that any movie can capture the nuances of the book. There have been a few movies that I’ve watched, before I found out that they were made from a book, that I’ve enjoyed. Then I would read the book and realize that the book was different, if not better, than the movie. Now if I know that a movie is being made of a book, I’ll watch the movie first and judge it on it’s own merits. If I read the book I’ll try not to compare it to the movie and judge them separate from each other.

by Cat S on February 1st, 2007 at 3:48 am

  55. I just saw Angel Fall over the weekend and I thought it ran pretty much true to the story line!
