What Would Luke Do?

Ann Christopher

I’ve just joined Access Romance and am thrilled to be a blogger here. For this, my very first blog with AR, I’d planned to introduce myself, my books, my philosophies, and generally treat you to, as Katie Couric would say, “a celebration of all things moi.” Alas, something big has happened, necessitating a change of plans. All that fun stuff will have to wait. And no, I’m not talking about the mid-term elections. Bigger than that.

Laura’s back.

As in Luke and Laura. General Hospital. November 16th is the 25th anniversary of their TV wedding, which was seen by millions including me and, probably, you.

Oh, please. Don’t act like you didn’t know. And don’t act like you were in kindergarten way back then, either. Let’s keep it real.

I’m all aquiver with excitement. So much so that, even though I don’t normally watch much TV, except for my new favorite show, Friday Night Lights, I had to wrestle the remote out of my children’s grasping hands, delete all their stored SpongeBob SquarePants, Saddle Club, and Ben 10 episodes, and make room on the DVR for a few episodes of General Hospital. Oh, who cares if I haven’t seen the show in years? Does that really matter? Nor does it really matter too much that Laura’s back, other than the fact that she gives Luke a nice focal point for all his turbulent emotions.

The bottom line is this: I just want to see Luke, the modern-day model for all deliciously wicked alpha males everywhere, back in action.

Am I the only one?

Forget the Luke from that awful night on the floor of the disco with Laura while Herb Alpert’s Rise played in the background—that’s not the Luke I’m talking about.

I’m talking about the tormented, scorchingly intense Luke. The one who loved Laura to desperation and would—and did!—kill for her. Who’d walk over hot coals to be with her. Who’d manipulate, when necessary, to bring her around to his way of thinking. The slightly twisted, wickedly funny, excruciatingly vulnerable Luke.

Remember him?

Maybe I love this fictional character so much because I met him during my formative, impressionable teenage years. I can’t account for his enduring allure, and I certainly wouldn’t want to meet him—or anyone like him—in real life. But I love his unpredictability, his wild card ways. You can’t pin him down, and you can’t change his mind. He does what he wants.

And while I’m having true confessions, I have to admit that Justus Robinson, the hero from my February, 2007 book, Risk, channels this free-spiritedness every now and then. Once or twice I threw him into a scene, held my breath, and asked myself, “What would Luke do?” Then I put Justus into action and had tons of fun.

I’d love to write more, but I’ve got several hours of General Hospital to watch before the kids come home from school and kick me out of the TV room. But before I go, I’ve gotta ask:

What about you? Who are your favorite wild-card characters in romance novels or on the screen? What’s so irresistible about these ill-mannered, unpredictable men?

  1. I was an addict. A TOTAL GH addict - but the day they got married? I quit watching. I couldn’t take the drama anymore! I wanted to think of them a living a happily ever after, LOL! Of course I was young and impressionable, too!

  2. Welcome to AR. It’s a great group of authors, and a nice place for readers to visit.

I was 10 yrs old back then, but I watched their wedding. Loved the whole romance, the Ice Princess Days, Robert Scorpio, and when Laura went “missing”, it haunted me. No one could replace Laura, and Luke was the ultimate hero. The thing was, he wasn’t drop-dead gorgeous or charming, but he had charisma and was arrogant and totally did what he wanted to do, usually revolving around Laura, and that set him apart from any other hero out there. He really did define the alpha hero, at least in the soap world.

I don’t watch it anymore, but I would love to catch the 25th anniversary stuff, and reminisce a little….thanx for the memories.

  3. Hi, Alison!
I’m so glad I wasn’t the only addict! The day they got married, I vividly remember riding home on the bus and praying the power didn’t go out! BTW, last night I made myself a note of all the books I want to buy at the bookstore today, and at the top of the list is your IDIOT’S GUIDE TO WRITING EROTIC ROMANCE!

    Hi, Stacy–
Luke isn’t classically handsome, is he? And yet, with him, that seems totally irrelevant. Something about his intensity–the look in his eyes–and his arrogance makes him really sexy. Ah, the memories…

  5. Welcome to AR!

I honestly was in kindergarden 25 years ago (I just celebrated my 30th birthday). And I’ve never gotten into General Hospital. Kim mentioned Bo and Hope… now those are soap opera characters I recognize (Days… although I haven’t watched in several years).

For me, it’s the taming of the bad boy that gets me every time. I just love watching those ill-mannered, unpredictable men get hit by love directly between the eyes and then see how they cope. It’s just fun!

  6. Hi, Kim and Jennifer–

Bo and Hope… yeah, they’ve had their ups and downs, too, haven’t they?

Still, there’s something about LUKE. Maybe it’s his sense of humor… I dunno, but I try to capture a little bit of Luke in the heroes I write.

    Thanks for your comments,

  7. My two oldest children are named Lara ( from Dr Zhivago- Larissa) and Luke ( 3 years younger) because I liked the name. I’ve gotten so many comments: that I got their names from GH when I’ve never ever even watched the show.

I like the tormented brother or brothers who have had a bad experience and need to find the right woman to help them get back on track.

Examples of series with brothers :”the Mighty Quinns”- Kate Hoffmann, “The McKade Brothers”-Nora Roberts… Nora also had the “Shadow” series with some troubled guys.

  8. I have watched GH since I was a teenager and remember the wedding like yeasterday, lol. I hate what they have done with the characters. I think it’s stupid to bring Laura back since she isn’t staying I heard. I could never imagine them recasting her either so I am not happy about the storyline. I haven’t watched this past week yet,it’s on tape and I am anxious to see what’s happened.
The Luke we love is like a hero in a romance book, that would do anything for his lady love.I love those unpredictable, irrestable men just for that reason that they are unpredictable!
Welcome to AR,I am looking forward to more posts from you, especially since we already have something in common.

  9. Laurie–
Thanks for commenting! I also like the tormented brothers idea–that’s the basis of my book TROUBLE!
