Celebrating Girl Style

Celebrating–Girl Style!

I love my husband and my children but I’ve got to confess nothing makes me happier than a girls-weekend. Time away where I can just be Kathy and not have to worry about getting anyone to basketball practice on time or making sure that a costume is ready for a biography book report or even have to remember to pick up the dry cleaning. It’s a relaxing and stress free time where I can just be myself.

Every summer when I go to the RWA conference I get a little bit of this. I room with a couple of my good writing buddies and we talk to all hours of the night and then wake up the next morning and start talking again. Is it any wonder I lost my voice in Atlanta?!

But the most important thing about these times is just an acceptance of who were are as individuals. I don’t have to worry about fitting in with my girlfriends, they’ve already accepted me–warts and all. My family does too, but these are people that don’t have to love me because I haven’t taken care of them. Our bonds of friendship were made because we chose one another and I love that.

I love that I don’t have to preface any email or phone call to them with the comment that I might sound whiney. They just natural accept that if I’m calling and whining there must be a good reason for it. They are also infinitely full of good wishes when I have good news even if it’s not anything anyone else would care about.

On Halloween Night as I sat in front of my house with new girlfriends handing out candy, drinking a glass of wine and laughing. I realized how important having girlfriends was to me. How I enjoyed celebrating in girl style!

What about you? What is something you do with only your closest girlfriends? I realize I’m alienating any male blog readers….so what do you guys do together? I have to admit I imagine it involves inappropriate jokes and some kind of physical crazy stunts!!

  1. A movie and dinner is a great way to get a bunch of us together, and I think women are just as good with the inappropriate jokes, and even some physical stunt, depending on the amount of alcohol consumed LOL.

    I’ve always wanted to do like a spa weekend or something like that, not too expensive, but just something to pamper outselves. Sounds like fun.

  2. Stacy;

    I’ve had a spa weekend with some of my girlfriends. It was a lot of fun and so relaxing.

    Okay, under the banner of physical stunts…I have been known to dance on a table or two if the music is good and the wine is flowing!

  5. I can totally relate. As the only female in my house, I treasure togetherness times with my sisters. I have three and as adults, we have become best friends. I can totally recharge from their laughter and conversation. And if I am in a funk or really stressed, they always know just what to say. Plus we have gotten really good at “hugs” over the phone and internet.

  6. I have friends that I go to concerts with. They are community reciprocity concerts that include 5 different locations, Munster, Portage, Valparaiso, Michigan City, and LaPorte, Indiana. We have a blast! There are 4 of us. We take turns driving. Sometimes we go out for appetizers afterwards. At the Portage location, they have free appetizers at Pepe’s Mexican restaurant so we go there on occasion.

    Just getting out with the girls is so relaxing and rejuvenating. My husband is pretty macho so it feels good to be in the company of women. Plus I just have to get out because I go crazy being with my husband to much! I love him dearly but we butt heads a lot because of our spending to much time with one another.

  8. I miss having “in town” girlfriends. I have lots of friends online and RWA is a big source of friends for me. I also have friends from back in the day where I went to college and I still make the 2 1/2 hour trek to hang out with them from time to time. But I do miss having girlfriends nearby to drag to Starbucks and dish or to sneak in a movie and shared popcorn. There’s something really recharging about face to face time that’s girls only.

    LOL on the inappropriate jokes, Stacy… this is what makes girl time so fun. :wink:
