About our Contests and Giveaways

Happy Halloween!

Jaci Burton

I love this time of year. Crisp, fall air and pumpkins, leaves changing and the smell of cinnamon. Children ringing the doorbell wearing cute or scary costumes and expecting treats. And of course, candy. I love candy.

But there’s also something spooky and mysterious this time of year. Ghosts, goblins, witches, demons, vampires, werewolves and all things paranormal. My favorite things.

Which of course brings to mind evil. *rubs hands together*. The good stuff. As a paranormal writer, I love delving into the dark side of characters. They tend to be the most fun to write, because you can really let loose with them and let them have their way. For awhile anyway. Then you need the heroine and hero to kick evil’s butt.

In my upcoming book, Surviving Demon Island, there’s some serious evil floating around. Hell kind of evil. Really juicy stuff I could sink my teeth into (no pun intended – no vampires in my book). I had a great time drawing that line between good and evil, between the forces of darkness and light. My characters wage an incredible battle, and it’s not an easy one. Evil can be a powerful force. But so can goodness. Goodness kicks ass, in my opinion.

So let’s talk evil characters. In books or in movies. Who are some favorites that come to mind?

Freddy? Jason? Michael Myers? Hannibal Lecter? Dr. Evil? Hehehe. What about Voldemort from Harry Potter? How about the Wicked Witch of the West from Wizard of Oz? Even in Disney cartoons there are evil characters—Maleficent, Ursula, Cinderella’s stepsisters, Gaston, Cruella deVille….

Name your favorite evil characters in books or movies. I’ll draw a winner for an autographed print copy of any of my currently available books in print.

And Happy Halloween!

  1. I’ve always had a soft spot for Jason because “Friday the 13th: Part 3″ was the first scary movie I ever saw, and yeah, it was scary for a 12 year old! I also like Freddy because of the whole “dream” thing. But the idea of Dracula is probably the one that intrigues me the most - the history, the abilities, the mystery. Look at what the old Count has done for the vamp - made it trendy and mainstream.

  2. It has to be Hannibal Lector. When he was talking in Silence of the Lambs to Clarice it was spine tingling.

by Maureen on October 31st, 2006 at 7:13 am

  3. Cruella deVille is definitely one of my favorites. Another favorite for me is captain Pirk from the parody Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning.

by Minna on October 31st, 2006 at 7:37 am

  4. Dracula in Bram Stoker’s Dracula is not really the villain but he definitely one of my favorites.

  5. Its got to be Voldemort from Harry Potter because I love to watch Harry Potter. The books are good too.

  6. I just finished a series of Harlequin INTRIGUE books by Ann Voss Peterson.

Her “evil” character is serial killer Drydan Kane. It’s set in Wisconsin around the University of Wisconsin’s Madison campus. He’s murdered/butchered at least 12 young woman. Now, he’s escaped from prison and pursueing his three children to kill them!!
Exciting! I also liked it because I attended UW- Madison.

  7. John Adams in Danielle Steel’s Malice. He is a well known and admired attorney with a cancer stricken wife. Since his wife cant perform her wifely duties, he uses his daughter for those duties. Wife looks the other way so she will not have to have sex with him as she is so ill. Both of them nice, huh? Maybe not exactly evil; more cannot get much worse than that.

  8. Happy Halloween! Michael Myers, Freddy, Jason, Jack Torrance in The Shining, Benjamin Willis in I Know What You Did Last Summer, and the clown in It.

  9. The first villainous character to have ever mad an impression on me was the Children Catcher in Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang. I can laugh at the character now, but remember not being able to sleep for a couple of nights the first time I saw that movie.

  10. Dr. Hannibal Lecter from The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal is my all time favorite! Michael Myers and Freddy come in second and third.

by Susan on October 31st, 2006 at 12:39 pm

  11. Michael Myers from Halloween (I still like to watch the original each year). Jack from The Shining (this movie still scares me!). Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Jason from Friday the Thirteenth (the original) . And that evil clown from one of Stephen King’s novels which was made into a movie - I can’t remember the name offhand, but the clown scared me!

  13. Howdy all!

Love the comments so far, especially evil characters in books. I’m always open to finding new books I might not have read before and I love suspense and horror. Okay, I love all genres

Evil characters really capture my interest, though. There’s something so fascinating about what an author can do with the bad guy, don’t you think?

    Keep ‘em coming!

  14. The Wicked Stepmother/Queen in Snow White

Vincent Price in House of Wax

Tom Dunleavy from James Patterson’s BEACH ROAD

by Christy on October 31st, 2006 at 1:54 pm

  15. In movies I think Freddy Kruger from Nightmare on Elm Street and Hannibal Lecter really is evil. Recently the creepy boy and mom on the Grudge.
In books I think the Vampires in Christine Feehan’s Dark series are very evil.

by Dena on October 31st, 2006 at 2:15 pm

  16. The first character that I thought of was Cruella Deville. Dr. Hannibal Lecter is another good one. That clown in the movie “It” still freaks me out though. Kevin Spacey’s character in Se7en was pretty evil as well…he is an interesting actor and can play good or evil really well.

by Jennifer Y. on October 31st, 2006 at 2:24 pm

  17. I just remembered Dennis Hopper as Frank Booth in Blue Velvet

by Christy on October 31st, 2006 at 2:27 pm

  18. oh and, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) in Psycho

by Christy on October 31st, 2006 at 4:11 pm

  19. I think Cruella DeVille from the movies and Hugh Archer from Iris Johansens Fatal Tide.

by Estella on October 31st, 2006 at 4:13 pm

  20. Cruella DeVille came to mind first. But the character Glenn Close played in Fatal Attraction turned out to be pretty evil too.

by Cheryl S. on October 31st, 2006 at 4:49 pm

  21. Christy - some great ones! Loved House of Wax. And Norman Bates in Psycho was just downright creepy!

Cheryl - Glenn Close played a great psycho stalker in Fatal Attraction. So did Jessical Walter in Play Misty for Me.

My friend Jaycee Clark who writes for New Concepts Publishing writes some of THE scariest villains I’ve ever read. She gives me the heebie-jeebies every time I read one of her “Deadly” books. They’re fabulous and in print if you haven’t tried them yet. Yikes!

by Jaci Burton on October 31st, 2006 at 6:22 pm

  22. Cruella scared me to death when I was little, and Hannibal gets my vote for my grown up self.

by cathy on October 31st, 2006 at 8:30 pm

  23. Hannibal Lector. A murder who can get inside your mind and use that knowledge against you to kill you, then to eat you. That’s psychological terror.
