Sensual Pleasures

Jaci Burton

My husband and I were watching television the other night and he reached up and threaded his fingers through my hair and started rubbing my head.

Yowza. It felt so good. I soon realized I was leaning into him, like a cat rubs against something they find pleasurable so they can get more of it. I definitely wanted more of it. I wanted to close my eyes and lose myself in the relaxing sensation.

Sensual pleasures. Whether it’s human touch, the scent of your favorite perfume, the delectable flavor of ice cream or a cup of tea. Something that ignites our pleasure zone in a big way.

Some books do that to me. A favorite scene or the way the characters interact with each other with a look, a touch or through dialogue. It’s what keeps me turning page after page, when the characterization is so strong, when the chemistry just captures me from the first chapter and doesn’t let go. That’s a sensual pleasure that, when done right, stays with me long after the book is finished. That’s when you know the author has done her job. I can think of many authors who know how to capture those sensual pleasures in their books. I try to do it in mine. If I’m not tingling with anticipation as I write, then I’m not doing it correctly.

What about you? What’s your favorite sensual pleasure? What gets your ‘yowza’ meter going? Is it a touch, a massage, curling up under a favorite blanket, that first sip of a flavored cup of tea, a bite of heavenly chocolate, finishing a really great book? What taps into your sensual zone?

  1. When I was little, my grandfather used to scratch my back. He didn’t talk much, but he communicated more with touch. He never got tired of it, and I loved it. I think for a little kid to sit still for so long and just enjoy it was pretty amazing too LOL.

And I love getting my hair brushed. It’s longer now, so it feels wonderful when someone brushes my hair.

A really, really good cup of coffee is also wonderful, and I love to sit there and savor it. I like mine 1/2 regular coffee, 1/2 french vanilla cappuccino. Not too sweet, and not too bitter.

Now you’re making me wish I could stay home and wallow in some self-indulgence today.

  2. Reading a great book, listening to great music, my husband running his fingers through my hair and down my back or stroking my forehead, a leisurely bath, a small calvados.

  3. The smell of white cotton sheets that have been dried in the sun on a clothesline.
It’s a scent that I asscociate with comfort and security…like being wrapped in the arms of a loved one. It is my favorite smell. :)
And the smell of a man earing a fine men’s cologne..like Burberry Brit…yum!
I adore a good smellin’ man.

I also love puppy breath and freshly bathed and powdered baby scents, but they don’t rev the engine… so to speak! :P

  4. Stacy - wallowing sounds like a great idea today, doesn’t it?

Little Lamb - oh, a bath. I love a warm bath. Sooo relaxing!

Angie - you’re right about sheets dried outside in the sun. There’s no smell quite like it. Reminds me of my grandmothers.

  7. SO I’m late coming to the party, but the best sensual pleasure is my husband running his fingers up and down my arm (or, quite frankly, anywhere). It just makes me feel so good.
