Paranormal Elements in Romantic Suspense

Denise A Agnew

One of my favorite novel combinations features red hot romance, razor-sharp suspense, and spine-tingling paranormal elements. Few novels strive to combine all of these elements in one. Recently Ellora’s Cave released two of my books in updated, sexy revisions, Dangerous Intentions and Treacherous Wishes.

In Dangerous Intentions, wealthy magazine editor Kiley Chapman lives with the frightening memory of her kidnapping ten years ago. When she advertises for a man for a hero profile article, she soon discovers sinfully sexy bodyguard Scott Danger lives up to his name. Charismatic and confident, he erodes her resolve to stay cool and uninvolved. Security specialist and ex-Special Forces soldier Scott Danger prides himself on having impeccable restraint—a man who disciplines both mind and body. It’s questionable how long he can resist his powerful and heated attraction to Kiley—and all bets are off when he must protect her from a deadly stalker bent on destroying all they hold dear. The wildfire sexual attraction between them guarantees sparks they may not want to acknowledge but can’t ignore. So while Scott guards her body, and Kiley guards her heart, neither one can fight the sensual and emotional hunger that swirls between them, consuming them.

In Treacherous Wishes, Tammy Carter lost her psychic abilities in the aftermath of tragedy. Now, years later, her power resurrects when evil returns to her town. Everything in her comfort zone is disintegrating, except for one thing—the searing attraction she feels for one man. The one man who might stand between her…and death. Bodyguard Kyle Hawthorne doesn’t believe in the supernatural or in Tammy’s psychic gift, but when her life is threatened he’ll do anything to protect her. Professionalism requires a platonic relationship with his coworker at Taggert Security Team, yet the sizzling connection he feels for Tammy demands exploration every time he’s near her. Tammy harbors lightning-hot fantasies about Kyle. Suddenly their sensual desires and emotional connections are too powerful to ignore, and as they seek to sate the long-denied sexual hunger, they spark a chain reaction of events that may bring them together, or allow the evil to consume them.

In Dangerous Intentions a homeless man with unusual psychic abilities finds that his gifts can help rescue a woman and solve a crime. He’s not the hero, but he touched my heart and stirred my imagination so much that I made certain he reappeared in the sequel, Treacherous Wishes. In Treacherous Wishes ,he’s no longer homeless and works in the very soup kitchen he used to frequent as a homeless man. The drugs he’s been given to level him out interfere with his ability to use his psychic talents, and therefore he makes the decision whether to take the drugs or to utilize his extraordinary mind to its full extent. Also in Treacherous Wishes, Tammy Carter’s ability to see colors of evil is as unusual as the homeless man’s capability to “smell evil.” Among these characters are the heroes, bodyguards for the Taggert Security Team. Scott was in Special Forces, Kyle was once a police officer. Both men are skeptics who deal in danger—they are part of the suspense and the heavy-duty romance. Opposite the gorgeous bodyguards keeping our heroines safe and warm, I added enemies as evil and twisted as any I’ve produced for my other novels. I was particularly proud of the two nasty characters in Dangerous Intentions, and the perfectly frightening serial killer in Treacherous Wishes. I’ll admit it, these bad guys were as much fun to create as my rendition of Jack The Ripper in my historical romantic suspense/paranormal MIDNIGHT ROSE.

Why do you enjoy romantic suspense and paranormal mixed? The first two people to answer that question will receive a trade paperback copy of my out of print title, FOREVERMORE.

  1. I like it because of the imaginative worlds and abilities the characters have while throwing in the suspense. In most books with straight romantic suspense, the characters are just dealing with the danger and the sexual tension with only their “human” abilities. I like shape-shifters, or those that can move from realm to realm by thinking about it. Not too crazy about mind-readers unless they can’t read the main characters’ minds.

I love having characters that either have special powers or come from other worlds and have technology that is different than what is offered in the real world. Definitely adds a new element to the story.

I’d love to read your rendition of Jack the Ripper. I’ve studied serial killers for a long time and he’s one of my favs. I have lots of books about him.

  8. Pat,

Sharon Sala definitely writes some very intense and well done suspense. She has the most interesting characters, too.

  11. Melissa,

Unfortunately Midnight Rose, my Jack The Ripper book, is out of print right now. I’m hoping sometime in the future it’ll get back in print. So keep your eyes peeled! I’ve studied Jack The Ripper and serial killers for my other books, so I admit to having a keen interest in that as well for my writing. :) Not something you tell everybody. They look at you like you’ve lost your cork! I have a few Jack The Ripper fiction and fact books myself. I wish I could have made it to the Jack The Ripper tour given by Donald Rumbelo (sp) in London. I have his great non-fiction book on Jack.
