Seeing Stars

Tawny Taylor

I spent the past weekend doing book signings in Ohio. It’s always a joy meeting people who have read my books, talking to them, finding out what they enjoyed (or hated) about my stories. And it’s incredibly flattering when someone looks at little ole me with stars in their eyes, as if I’m someone special or important.

I’m just a suburban housewife with a bazillion kids.

But, I can relate to being star struck. I’ve been on the other side of the table MANY times.

At the Romantic Times Booklover’s convention this past spring, I stood in line for close to an hour to meet one of my all-time favorite authors. When I finally stood in front of her, I stumbled over my words, stuttering and sounding like a total lame goon.

Who have I made a fool of myself in front of?

Let’s see…there was MaryJanice Davidson and Erin McCarthy. And I can’t forget about when I met Jaid Black and Lora Leigh for the first time…and many, many others.

Who am I dying to meet?

Katie MacAlister
Janet Evanovich
Dan Brown

And guess what? This week I get to be a total stuttering fan! There’s a bus full of authors heading my way, including Gena Showalter (happy squee!), Susan Kearney (goofy grin), Allison Brennan (yippie!), and Gemma Halliday (giddy giggle)! I. Can’t. Wait!

So, what authors put stars in your eyes? Have you met any? And who would you love to meet?

I’m giving away a free print copy of my upcoming Kensington release, Sex and the Single Ghost to one lucky reader!
Sex and the Single Ghost
Post a response for a chance to win. I’ll randomly draw a name before noon on Thursday, Aug. 24. And the winner will be posted here, in the comments section.

Good luck!

  1. Hi Tawny! I’ve met Susan Gable and Erin McCarthy. They are both so sweet even when we stutter in their presence. I would love to meet Lori Foster and Lisa Childs.
I was lucky enough to win Lisa’s 1st Intrigue book and I’ve been a fan ever since. She’s an auto-buy author for me now. Every time I email her to tell her how much I enjoy her newest release, I’m still amazed that she actually writes me back to thank me for reading and liking her books. She’s definitely the author that puts stars in my eyes. I’d probably be tongue-tied if I ever did meet her. :)

  2. Erin is very sweet. So is Lori Foster. MJD is so funny - I love how her mind works.

I’ve met one of my “idols” - Suzanne Brockmann, which was amazing. She’s so down-to-earth and friendly, and always doing something for the troops. Her hubby Ed and friend Eric are a riot. Diana Gabaldon is another one I wanted to meet, and she’s just lovely.

For those who are still on my list: Judith McNaught is at the top of my list. Jude Deveraux as well. Lisa Kleypas is another. I hope I don’t make a total fool of myself. I probably could have met Lisa in Atlanta, but I don’t know about JM or JD.

  3. Oh I did forget Janet Evanovich. I just finished “Ten Big Ones” last night, and oh man, Joe and Ranger. Ranger and Joe. Love ‘em….

by Stacy ~ on August 23rd, 2006 at 7:26 am

  4. Linda Howard

Her books really locked me into romanctic suspense some years ago with Midnight Rainbow and Diamond Bay. I am not good with meeting people in the best of times, but I am sure that I would stutter and be even less eloquent if I were to meet her.

  5. I went to my first and last book signing this year. The author was Anne Rice. I said “first and last” not because of anything she did or didn’t do, because she was super nice and looked normal (not like she did on some of her TV interviews-LOL-she’s got a one of a kind persona), but because I felt totally inadequate. What can you say in the few minutes you have that conveys how much you have admired their work without it sounding inane or insipid. I don’t remember what I said, I do remember feeling flustered and turning red. And after all that, when I looked inside the book I found that she had spelled my name wrong. Ugh!

  6. I would love to meet George Clooney. But I would make a fool of myself and whatever I did manage to say to him, I would prob. feel it was stupid.

I did meet a soap opera star from The Guiding Light many years ago in a local pizza parlor. I went up to him and said I loved his work and the soap; He didnt make me feel welcome. So I felt idiotic.

by Pat L. on August 23rd, 2006 at 8:32 am

  7. I met Suzanne Brockmann a few years back. I went to her booksigning with a friend. She was very gracious in signing my books; but I was smart; didnt say much. Didnt want to put my foot in the old mouth. LOL.

    Great prize.

by Joanne V. on August 23rd, 2006 at 8:35 am

  8. I haven’t got to meet any authors. Closest bookstore is 2 hours away. :( I would love to meet Lora Leigh, Shiloh Walker, Linda Howard, Heather Graham, Karen Robards, MaryJanice Davidson, and Elizabeth Lowell.

by Amy S. on August 23rd, 2006 at 8:37 am

  9. The RT in Daytona was so much fun. I knew many authors from the net, but to meet them in person was fantastic.

by Danny on August 23rd, 2006 at 8:41 am

  10. There are so many authors that I would love to meet. A few would be Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Erin McCarthy, Sylvia Day, Anna DeStefano, Vicki Lewis Thompson, Jane Porter, and MJD. I am quite capable of making a fool of myself in front of each and every one of them, to be certain  . I hope to go to the next RT convention. If I get to meet you, just remember I’ll be the one either rendered mute or with an obvious stutter  . Oh well, we can’t all be fabulous in the presence of greatness lol.

by Zara on August 23rd, 2006 at 9:01 am

  11. I met Michael McGarrity who was very charming. His books are really great, Love, them.

by ellie on August 23rd, 2006 at 9:07 am

  12. I’ve met some of my favorite authors including Dorothea Benton Frank and Nicholas Sparks. I’d love to meet some of my favorite mystery authors such as Laura Childs, Tamar Myers, Charlaine Harris, Maggie Sefton, Shirley Damsgaard, and Cleo Coyle.
I would also like to meet Karin Gillespie. Her Bottom Dollar Girl novels are a hoot.
I love when my local library has an author come speak and sign books. It’s a lot more intimate and relaxed than a long line at a bookstore.

by Sandra M. on August 23rd, 2006 at 9:11 am

  13. Well, I have not met anyone:cry:

by Kathleen on August 23rd, 2006 at 9:16 am

  14. I’ve never met anyone. I’ve never been lucky enough to live in an area or been visiting an area where a signing was taking place. But, that may be changing soon I hope. We will be moving some place, I no not where yet. Not even what state it will be in. Or for that matter how long it will be before my husbands job comes to an end here. :? So who knows maybe in the future I maybe able to meet several authors, wouldn’t that be great!

by Tammy G. on August 23rd, 2006 at 9:30 am

  15. My list is the same as yours, Tawny!!
I’ll also add Michael Crichton, Kelley Armstrong and Jennifer Crusie to the list.

  16. Hi Tawny!
I’ve met Julie Kenner, Karen Young, Linda Barrett, debut author Sophie Jordan, Barbara Dawson-Smith, Robin T. Popp, Nina Bangs, Christine Feehan, Colleen Thompson and a bunch of others. They are all wonderful ladies. It was very exciting getting to meet each and every one of them. Yes, I have stumbled over my words when talking to some of them. Sometimes I freeze up once I actually get to the front of the line. I hope to meet more authors when the RT Convention comes to Texas. The author I would really like to meet is Laurell K. Hamilton.

by Nicole on August 23rd, 2006 at 10:32 am

  28. ooh, I’m dying to read this book. It could go in my keeper collection when I’m done. :)

I met Robin Schone at a booksigning a few years back. We actually chatted for about ten minutes or so. She is so nice. I was a nervous wreck and so happy she carried the conversation. haha! I’d love to go to a convention one year and meet all the authors I’ve chatted with on lists. I think it would be a thrill to meet any of them. No one stands out more than the other.

by KimW on August 23rd, 2006 at 7:16 pm

    Thanks everyone…and especially Tawny!!
Email is on the way shortly! Doing the happy dance here!
I’ve had a reaaallly crappy day and this just made it better. :P

by Angie T on August 24th, 2006 at 5:57 pm

  38. Of course, I’ve met a ton of authors. I’ve met Nora like ten times and I’m still nervous as hell and can’t get more than two words out. Debbie Macomber also made me nervous…no wait, SHE didn’t make me nervous, I *was* nervous because I was so in awe of her success. Now that we got a chance to work on a project together, I’m over it. She’s so gracious and sweet. I’ve only met one author who put me off…not mentioning names, but he’s not a romance writer. Generally speaking, romance writers are super accessible.

If it makes anyone feel better, all authors are nervous about meeting readers. We’re afraid we’ll say something wrong and make an idiot out of ourselves. Okay, maybe that shouldn’t be ‘we’ and ‘our’ but ‘me’ and ‘my!’

by Julie Leto on August 24th, 2006 at 6:12 pm

  39. Congrats Angie!
