Going Too Far?

Jamie Denton

If you haven’t heard about it already, you’ve been missing out on a hilarious read. I haven’t yet decided if it’s even real, or some truly outrageous promotional gimmick, but regardless, this woman’s antics are indeed outrageous.

Who am I talking about? Why Emily, of course.

That Girl Emily is the blog of a woman allegedly scorned by her cheating husband. Worse, he supposedly cheated on her with her best friend! And Emily is out for revenge in a big way. In fact, she’s promised fourteen days of getting even and so far, man, has she ever kept her promise.

First she put up a billboard near his office announcing she was on to the cheating bastard. If that wasn’t enough, she paid for it out of their joint checking account. But Emily wasn’t done with a billboard alerting the world to Steven’s infidelity. She then drove around their neighborhood and gave away bottles of wine from his wine collection. She’s also done things like baked brownies with a laxative and sent them to Steven at work with a note indicating they were from the mistress. She’s posted about packing up his porn collection and sending it to his parents. Her latest method of revenge was to use his credit card to send roses to all the women (and a few men) in his office, with a sleazy note attached.

These are just a few of her antics. But the one that stopped me and had me wondering if she’d gone too far was when she vandalized his car.

Emily's Revenge 1 Emily's Revenge 2

I’m curious to see what Emily will come up with next. Spray painting HOPE SHE WAS WORTH IT on a brand new BMW 530i to me definitely qualifies as a bit over the top.

Whether or not Emily’s antics are real or some crazy promotional gimmick, has she gone too far? If this is some promo stunt, is it for a book? A movie? I don’t think it matters too much, because Emily has indeed stepped over the line. If it is real, we can’t not think about the the legal ramifications of what she’s done because vandalism is a criminal act, and there are all those credit card charges she could be forced to pay. I think she could use a few classes on anger management, but on the other hand, I can sympathize with her. The man cheated on her with her best friend, and she has the video to prove it. But if Emily is indeed a fictional character, has she become an unheroic heroine?

Part of me says yes. Revenge may be sweet, and in this case rather funny, in a twisted sort of way, but it’s also a fine line to walk in fiction. I’ll keep reading That Girl Emily because I’m curious to see how, or if, Emily can redeem herself. There is, after all, the bad Karma she’s no doubt stirring up that can come back to bite her in the butt, too.

My question is, can you relate to Emily as a heroine? Do you think she’s a real woman scorned or a fictional one?

NOTE: On Monday, July 31st, I’m holding an ARC giveaway of my upcoming November romantic suspense, THE MATCHMAKER, over on the Deadline Hellions blog, so be sure to stop by for your chance to win one of the three copies being offered.

  1. Hi Jamie,

when you mentioned the BMW, I remembered that something similar happened not so long ago in England. A cheated wife put her husband’s favorite sports car on ebay for 50 cent, because he was openly flirting on air with a woman.
Revenge can be sweet, but there always has to be a limit. But I think only the persons who lived through such a situation can really judge how far is too far.
We say now that is pretty bad reaction, but what would we do in such a situation? One has always to consider both sides.

  2. You cant judge unless you are in the other person’s shoes. But there are some limits and because the husband was a crass jerk for want of a better expression, you don’t want to get yourself into legal troubles. HE is definitely not worth it.

Can’t even guess if this is true. I did hear something regarding a billboard. Don’t know if it was this issue or not.

  3. I don’t know if it’s for real or not. If it’s for real, I think she really has to think of the legal ramifications of what’s she done. If it’s made up, she doesn’t come across as heroine.

  4. That’s so true Pat!

  5. I thought it was funny and would definitely cheer if a heroine in a novel did something like this. Nothing like the grand gesture to show just how angry (and vindictive) you can be when you find your partner cheating.

I do know, however, that the billboards that showed up in several major US cities are just an advertisement campaign. I want to say it’s for something coming up on CourtTV but I don’t remember what.

  6. There are many who would know no bounds since they were really wronged. This is above the top but when you are pushed to the limit that is what happens.

  7. She is having a great time getting back and this is big time for her.

  8. Revenge is sweet and she has to make her mark.

  9. It is a great story and there are many who would go this far but it seems to be a story without an end so far.

  10. I don’t think that cheating is right but personally I would never go to these lengths to get back at someone. When I read all this my first thought was I’d love to hear his side of the story. What happened in their relationship. There may be a lot more we don’t know about Emily. If it is real, I think in time she may be saying ” I probably shouldn’t have done that”. haha!

I do think it would make for a good romantic comedy or possibly chic lit. Maybe using only the things that won’t land the heroine in jail.

  11. After being clued in by Alison Kent to this blog, I also had to wonder if it was real, especially when the billboards have been spotted in more than one city across the country. So then I read the blog and thought it sounded a little too pat, too robotic, so I’m not convinced it’s anything more than a promo thing. And the footage from MyTube just doesn’t fit with my image of a p.i. following a cheating couple - it didn’t seem secretive or sleazy enough LOL.

If it was real, I think the billboard was more than enough. All the rest is way over-the-top. I don’t condone cheating, but there is always 2 sides of every story, and that just seems so extreme, it really does. But oh how it’s getting people’s attention.

  12. I don’t know if it is real or not but she definitely went overboard. I can sympathize with her feeling of betrayal but she definitely has anger management issues and needs counseling. She is also putting herself in the positions of being liable for damages which is foolish. If the guy is lousy enough to sleep with her best friend what is to prevent him from suing her.

  13. I definitely think she went overboard spraying th BMW.

by Estella Kissell on July 30th, 2006 at 4:31 pm

  14. I don’t think I can relate to her as a heroine if she has that much anger. I hope that she is fictional and not a real person.

by Karen G on July 30th, 2006 at 6:25 pm

  15. that is cool. can’t wait.

  16. I think Cynthia’s right because Sunday’s post was apparently Emily’s last, and there was mention of Court TV. Allegedly, this is where her brother found the PI who got the cheating spouse on tape, so it sounds to me like it’s all some big publicity stunt for an advertisement for this PI’s show on Court TV. Although, she mentions the PI firm in her final post, the show itself wasn’t mentioned.

  17. It’s definitely a marketing campaign. The local news showed the “video”, which was amazingly good quality and more than passable cinematography. (Not once did the subjects’ heads get cut off from the camera jiggling around — and how did they get that nifty shot looking up from the floor?)

The funny thing is that the billboard here in LA is located on the Sunset Strip, incredibly pricey real estate even if it’s a small billboard — and it’s located on the side of the building that houses National Lampoon. Think about that one for a moment.

  18. Caro - What I found interesting, even for a marketing campaign is that there was little mention to no mention of what was being marketed, except for perhaps the final post where Court TV was mentioned briefly. IOW, I was into it simply for the entertainment value, but as someone mentioned here, a lot of it seemed a little too pat. I agree.

But then I used to like those old Taster’s Choice coffee commercials, too, so I guess I’m a sucker for a good ad. :D

  19. Wow! - I just came over to tell you that ‘Matchmaker’ looks good - lol - and can’t wait to read it. This was a bonus. Don’t know if she’s the real deal or not - doubt it - and to answer your question, I think I’d go along for the ride if she was the heroine in a book, but only so far. That car stunt was the turning point.
