Fun, Sun And Reading

HelenKay Dimon

I leave this weekend for a few days at the beach. This is one of my favorite warm weather adventures. We pack up the car and the dog and head down to North Carolina to take over someone else’s house for a week. It’s a beautiful thing. And, really, the whole not-being-at-work issue is hard to beat. Now, normally sweating and getting sand everywhere sand should not be aren’t items on my Must Do List, but there’s something about being outside and relaxing…and did I mention the part where I’m not at work?

This year’s trip will not revolve (totally) around lounging, eating and fun because I have a July 1st deadline and, well, let’s just say I have a few too many pages to write before then. This will cut into the slug-like pace at which I like to move while vacationing. I’m quite sure eating and sleeping in the sun will be a tad curtailed. Kind of a bummer, but we planned the trip a month out from deadline on purpose so I could write, write, write. And did I mention the good part…how I won’t be at work?

Post-July 1st will lead to a perfect storm of two of my favorite reading activities: summer reading and post-deadline reading. I tend to do each of these with an almost scary abandon. Now that the two will coincide, there’s no telling how slug-like I’ll be for the balance of July. It’s a scary thing to contemplate.

The goal over the next month will be to fight off the urge to grab a book and start reading. No, no, no. The fun part must wait. But, as a break from the deadline pressure (and as a way to feed my procrastination habit) I have started a little list of books I want to read in July. I’ve picked out my first books. All are June and July releases so that I can live in my little dreamworld and pretend I don’t already have a TBR stack 32 miles high.

Here are my first few reads (just a sampling):

-Every Secret Thing by Lila Shaara
-Kitty Goes To Washington by Carrie Vaughn
-The Kept Woman by Susan Donovan
-Hit Hard by Amy Fetzer
-Trouble by Ann Christopher

What about you? Do you have June and July 2006 releases you’re saving or are looking forward to reading? Give me your list. Yeah, this is totally selfish in that I’m hoping I’ll find new books to add to my list. I’ll randomly select a commentor on Saturday June 10th. The winner gets a $25.00 B&N or Amazon gift card, your choice, so that you can go out and buy some of those books on your list. Remember, June and July 2006 releases only.

  8. I hope you have a great vacation. I live in North Carolina and love going to the beaches. We usually visit Wrightsville beach in NC and of course Myrtle Beach in SC. The ocean is lovely and I think I’m really a beach bum at heart.

  10. I grew up in North Carolina and love the whole coast there — so much history! Have fun and remember me sweltering in this Alabama heat.

    I am looking forward to:

Over the Line by Cindy Gerard
Twelve Sharp by Janet Evanovich (of course I really need to find the 11th book and read it — it was ah… misplaced during some cleaning last summer)
Cover of Night by Linda Howard
Killing Time by Linda Howard (paperback version comes out in June)
    Never Happened by Debra Webb
The Sheik and I by Linda Winstead Jones
Close Enough to Kill by Beverly Barton

by Marilyn on June 2nd, 2006 at 9:58 am

  11. I actually attended law school in North Carolina, but not at the beach. Don’t know how I would have gotten any studying done if I had. We’re going to Outer Banks, Corolla to be exact. I’m kind of hoping that all of the other tourists and beach lovers are busy this week and NOT heading for NC. One of the great things about Corolla as opposed to somewhere like Rehobeth Beach, is the lack of crowds.

Some of these book suggestions are new to me, so I’ll have to check them out on B&N. But I do have lot of these on my list too. In fact, I got ARCs of Hell on Wheels, Ex Why and Me and Aussie Rules that are just sitting atop my TBR pile waiting for me to finish the book I’m working on.

Daughter of the Flames by Nancy Holder

Of course, that is after I deal with my overflowing current pile of TBR books.

  21. Phyllis - Bring It On (Retrievers)? I have to admit I don’t know what that is. WSill go check it out.

A lot of these are on my list too. It should make some authors very, very happy to see how we’re all waiting for their releases. I haven’t tried Catherine Mann yet. I need to since everyone raves about her. And, yeah, I have to admit that I got JAK/Castle’s book in the mail and read it despite the deadline. I don’t love her futuristics like I do her other stuff, but I’ve always had a soft spot for her and read everything she puts out there.

Helen - Thank you!!! According to the Kensington website, Viva Las Bad Boys! comes out July 25th. That would be consistent with When Good Things Happen To Bad Boys (that title is too long to type, btw) which was an April release but came out in March. We’ll see…

  35. HelenKay, I thought Viva Las Bad Boys was an August release? Has that changed?

by azteclady on June 4th, 2006 at 10:46 am

  36. I hope you have a great time on vacation. Maybe those words will come to you so fast you will finish quickly.

I just got home in the wee hours of the morning from my vacation in Arizona. It was 115 degrees when we left. Too hot! I was melting. LOL We stayed in a private home and I spent most of the week reading, shopping and eating. No deadlines for me since I can’t write.

These are the books I want to read:

    Megan’s Mark by Lora Leigh
Hunting the Hunter by Shiloh Walker
