Summer Time

Katherine Garbera

School’s Out officially today and to be honest in the back of my head all I hear is Alice Cooper singing School’s out for summer/School’s out forever. Rocking out loud and long to that song every year when I heard that last bell and made a bee-line for the exit. Summer always held the promise of long, lazy days spent in the pool or at the beach (I’m a Florida girl, born & bred!).

What I liked best about summer was the fact that there was no schedule and really nothing to do. My parents had a strict bedtime that they enforced like military police during the school year but summer days bled easily into summer nights and bed time was more relaxed. I liked sunbathing with my friends and dreaming of the future and the adventures we’d have. Planning our lives from a lounge chair, our bodies oiled up (this was before we knew we were inviting skin cancer) and the Police blasting from our boom box.

Summer is different now. I still look forward to it because my kids schedules are lighter and we don’t seem to ever have to be any where super early….like before noon!

Another thing I look forward to every summer is RWA’s National Conference. This year it’s in Atlanta, a city I’ve been to many times and LOVE. I can’t wait to get there and hang out with all the cool writers and readers who attend. I love being some place where everyone loves to read!

It’s my yearly chance to chat it up with friends that I usually only keep up with at conferences, meet new friends and have a good time. A lot of business goes on at the conference too, which makes it the best of every world. The best of the Kathy World anyway!

What are you looking forward to this summer? A special trip, a new release from your favorite author, a concert or movie?

Here’s my list:

Trip–NYC in June. I can’t wait. This is the first time my kids are going to Manhattan and I’m so excited to show them the city.
Book–I hate to pick just one book so…Tara Janzen’s CRAZY LOVE, Christine Feehan’s DANGEROUS TIDES, my own June release EXCLUSIVE which I hope reader’s respond to because it was a different direction for me!
Concert–my beloved (he doesn’t know he’s my beloved!) Dave Matthews and his band are coming in August and I can’t wait!
Movie–I have to say X-Men 3 (yummy Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine!) and the new Pirates of the Caribbean (Johnny Depp–I was in lust with him from the first moment he appeared on 21 Jump Street!).

  1. I’m looking forward to the beach, vacation in Virginia and some sailing.

  2. Woo hoo for summer! Oh how I miss summer vacations - no school, sleeping late, basking in the sun, hanging out at the lake. Life was good.

I’m also looking forward to both those movies - “X-Men 3″ & “Pirates of the Carribbean”. Book-wise, there are just sooo many! Erin McCarthy has one coming out in August, MJD has one in June, and there have to literally be at least 20 other books I can’t wait to read.

In a few weeks I’m heading to Ohio for Lori Foster’s get-together, so I’m really looking forward to that. And RWA in July - my first big conference thingy. Just planning on hanging out and enjoying it. I’ve never been to Atlanta, so I’m excited about exploring a bit.

It should be a great summer.

  3. My two boys also finish school today. My son, Eric graduated last night…always a thrill!
I’m looking forward to not getting up at 4:30! My kids take the school bus and leave the house at 5:30. I get up early to put the wash away, to wake them up, to make their breakfasts and school lunches etc.
Summer is a great time to get together with family and friends. The time always goes by too quickly!

  4. Enjoy your RWA Conference.

Summer means warm weather and winter is def. over for awhile.

Since my husband will probably be working all summer we probably won’t get to do much unless it is a w/e thing. So, I will do some day things with my girlfriends and enjoy time NOT being at work. LOL. My sister is coming in from Calif. to visit my folks, so will spend some time with her.

Of course and read, read and read. These are the upcoming books that are must reads for me:
Nina Bangs, etc - Surf’s Up
Susanna Carr - Ex, Why and Me
H.K. Dimon - Viva Las Bad Boys
Susan Donovan - The Kept Woman
Jane Graves - The Boys are Back in Town and Mood Swing
Candy Halliday - Your Bed or Mine?
Karen Kelly - Hell on Wheels
Erin McCarthy - The Bad Boys of Summer
Judi McCoy - Almost a Goddess
    Carly Philips 2 new ones
    Susan Mallery - Irresistible
    Jill Shalvis upcoming books
Cannot Wait. So many books….so little time.

  6. My kids are married so my schedule doesn’t really change in the summer. I do get to spend more time with the grandchildren and I’m outdoors more either working in my garden or reading on my back porch.

  7. In the summer I look forward to nice weather and fresh air. If I’m having a good day, I can make it to the gazebo where I like to sit and read and listen to the birds.

  8. This summer means… my eldest going away for a summer college program, for six weeks. My sister in law and her two youngest [16 and 13] visiting for four weeks *happy dance* Time spent in the pool and late night walks with the dogs. Movies, too many books to list, yard work.

  9. I also am looking forward to X-Men 3. As for books, there are too many to name. I am also looking forward to going to SW Florida for a week and spending time with my family. My mother and twin sister are going to watch our son for a few days as well so we can get away and celebrate our anniversary in Orlando.

  10. I’m looking forward to a family reunion in August on my Dad’s side and meeting some relatives that I’ve never met before; unfortunately, both Mom and Dad have passed away within the last 2 1/2 yrs. and I’ll be missing them there.

We will be finishing up on the outside of the house and fence(painting) and then we can sit outside and enjoy the view.

My one sister and her dh have their 25th anniversary in Sept. so there will be
a ‘do’ at the lake at their cabin.

  12. I am looking forward to many new books…especially Julia Quinn’s newest. Other than reading, my summer will probably be a little boring. Oh, and I am looking forward to meeting my new neice who is supposed to be born in June.

by Jennifer Y. on May 25th, 2006 at 4:33 pm

  13. Getting up a little later in the mornings while the kids are on summer break.

  14. I have way too many books to list. I want to see The Da Vinci Code and the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I’m hoping to go visit my mom on the coast of Georgia next month and maybe go to Minnesota with my sister in August. AND my first grandchild is due next month.

My kids are grown and gone (except the 55 year old one  ) so I don’t even know when school got out. I haven’t seen the school bus lately so it must be out. Awful, huh?

  15. MY daughter doesn’t get out of school until June 21st. The only plans we have is to go to a few Mariner games across the puget sound from where we live. We love the Mariners and have to go to at least a few games in the summer for our fix. If it wasn’t so expensive we would go more. Besides that I plan on reading Brenda Novaks DEAD SILENCE and Bertrice Small’s A DISTANT TOMORROW,Christine Feehan’s DANGEROUS TIDES,and I’ll check your new book out EXCLUSIVE too! Then I have a hefty pile of TBR I need to tackle. So many books and not enough time to read them.
