Maternal Characters

Robin D Owens

Naturally this blog has to deal with mothers! I am close to my mother and I love her dearly, but the mothers in my work are not always so loving. In Sorceress of Faith, the main inner conflict my heroine (Marian) had was with her mother and the image her mother had of Marian. And how her mother’s image of Marian shaped her own.

On the other hand, in my Heart books, I’ve shown strong, lovely and loving professional women as mothers (D’Holly, D’Heather), middle class mothers holding a family together (the Clover women). And …um… mothers who have gone over to the dark side in the name of furthering their child.

Now that I think about it, all of the mothers were strong in some ways even if weak in others – like women in general.

But romance celebrates women, and families, and strong, maternal characters will always hold a lovely place in the genre.

Happy mother’s day! And if there is a particular mother/maternal character, let us know!

  1. I always left that the mother in Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series was rather wonderful. I can’t think of her name at the moment, but she’s the first one that came to mind - supportive of her sons and daughters, no matter what they were going through, strong, caring, and affectionate. She is a mother to be celebrated.

  2. Excellent character.

I think many of Nora Robert’s maternal characters strike the right note, too. Esp. the ones who are heroines!

  3. I really like Reenie in Big Girls Don’t Cry by Brenda Novak. She is faced with the biggest deception a wife can face [husband not only cheating on her but married to a other woman with a another family]and she put her children first and tackled it with dignity and grace
